On NI - possibly too early to say, but weekly deaths seem to be down by a third and carehome outbreaks are down.

They have fantastic data which will be worth keeping an eye on over the next few weeks

That's brilliant. Thank you.

Eyewhisker · 24/01/2021 17:47

Looking more at the NI data, there are promising signs. Deaths are down by a third in a week (7 day average) which is greater than the fall in cases. This is consistent with what you would expect from vaccinating care home residents. Not much impact on cases, but a big impact on deaths.

of course, too early to be sure, but looks good

AnyFucker · 24/01/2021 19:20

Exactly how far ahead of us is Israel in the vaccinating numbers ?

Frazzled2207 · 24/01/2021 19:23

@AnyFucker I believe they are about 35 % of pop first dose but in terms of raw numbers we are ahead, I think. I’ll find the chart in a moment.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 24/01/2021 19:29

Israel's population is only around 9 million. So the percentage vaccinated is higher but not the number of vaccinations administered

AnyFucker · 24/01/2021 19:37

Thanks

ancientgran · 24/01/2021 19:50

Israel also refusing to honour their lawful duty to supply Palestinians. Saw their Health Minister being interviewed this morning.

Doesn't surprise me.

My father was Jewish but part of Jews for justice. A group for Jewish people that condemn the treatment of Palestinians by Israel.

Hopefully at some stage Israel will realise if they don't help then the problem will still be there. Via possible mutations etc

ancientgran · 24/01/2021 20:28

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum I think your father was a sensible man. Andrew Marr said alot of Rabbis are asking the Israeli govt to do the right thing, I think he said 200 Israeli Rabbis have written to the Israeli govt demanding they do the right thing. Of course you are right, if the Palestinians don't get the vaccine it will be a pool of infection in their midst. Having said that I believe the Palestinians are now getting supplies of the Sputnik V from Russia so that will be a bonding experience.

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo All good points but don't other cities have these kind of issues/stats? Why is Leicester increasing now compared to most other places that are falling? What is odd is Oadby and Wigston numbers have been high for weeks and are now coming down but the rest of the city and county are increasing. I can't figure it out!

@Chaotic45 Again, good point about intergenerational living. But surely that should mean number are consistently high. And they rocketed during Nov then came down nicely during the firebreak. Makes no sense if the cases are being driven by intergenerational living as the firebreak wouldn't bring a decrease, would it?

I don't know,I'm so fed up, we've been so forgotten here and it's so frustrating

One thing Leicester had had longer than everywhere else and at a higher level is the non-symptomatic testing.

The council were doing door to door testing back in June, July and august then paused it for a bit and restarted in December along with adding in the drop in centres.

I would really like to see what our numbers of tests total not just positive are compared with other cities as a percentage of the population.

Layladylay234 · 24/01/2021 20:42

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo Now that is a good point. And we have the neighbourhood centre doing asymptomatic testing.

TheDinosaurTrain · 24/01/2021 20:59

Someone wanted a good data analysis of what we should be looking for re vaccines and cases - I spotted this on Twitter earlier, I’m not sure who the author is (I haven’t background checked them!) but JBM retweeted it so it showed up on my feed...

Tests by borough are broken down on the dashboard
coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/cases?areaType=ltla&areaName=Leicester

Leicester had about 14k tests last week which I (I think) about 4% of the population. Positivity rate of 16% and rising

For England as a whole, there were 2m tests (approx 3.6% of the population) and a positivity rate of 14%

So at first glance whilst Leicester has been testing slightly more people proportionately, they have a higher positivity rate too - I would think mass testing would result in a lower positivity rate?

New mutation that spreads faster

MRex · 24/01/2021 21:32

That article also suggests it evaded antibodies to reinfect someone who recovered from Covid in April. Similar to the Danish mink variant, of course there's a huge population of mink in the USA.

Yes I heard that. It was a dark point in an otherwise positive interview. Basically he said sod them, their problem. I think they could be more magnanimous than that plus it is excellent pr for Israel so a win win really.

But presumably one case doesn't prove anything - there are other known examples of reinfection with the previous strain, aren't there? But something for the researchers to watch for.

It's an excellent thread, he is a maths professor at the University of Bristol who tweets a lot about Covid at the moment. I also like his snarky sense of humour. Grin His estimates have been quite accurate in the past, so worth watching to see how accurate he is on the effect of the vaccines...

TeaInTheGarden · 25/01/2021 00:00

I saw this as well and it made my day. Particularly this graph. I hope he’s not being too ambitious with his projections- if anyone is able to check his maths (bit over my head!) and report back I’d love to hear what you think!

The big problem with it is that he's cherry picked data up until the 19th - data from the 20th onwards diverges significantly from his tidy downward trajectory.
notevenat20 · 25/01/2021 05:30

Is there any available data on what proportion of vaccinations are from the Pfizer and Oxford vaccines? I can’t find it.

Frazzled2207 · 25/01/2021 08:14

@notevenat20
I would like to know this too. The only stat I have seen is that in Wales Pfizer to astra Zeneca proportion is 4:1 which surprised me
