thatgingergirl · 19/01/2021 17:35

New developments in Spain are looking very promising www.catalannews.com/covid-19/item/drug-that-could-provide-immediate-immunity-against-covid-to-go-to-clinical-trial

I was looking at an Attenborough book about mammals with DD this morning and we spent some time discussing how awesome it would be to have a pet Pygmy shrew

@1990s no it definitely was not you! Smile

This is one of only two threads that I visit on MN, the rest of the site is horrific.

Please, please don't censor the thread to suit individual expectations. There were points when the statistics that were discussed on this thread didn't suit me, but I dealt with it myself!

Schools reopening IS a good thing because it is the first step towards a normal society. Anyone who doesn't want to go back, can choose to wait until they feel the time suits them. But the government will not allow hospitality to reopen before schools after the reaction they got last time.

MarshaBradyo · 19/01/2021 17:39

There is also no where else to discuss schools being re opened without being mobbed.

Very glad we have this thread

FourTeaFallOut · 19/01/2021 17:41

I've never seen or heard of a quokka but I'll never forget (not least for it's impressive use of awkward tiles in Scrabble)

thatgingergirl · 19/01/2021 17:41

More green on littleowls slide bar I think?!

TheChineseChicken · 19/01/2021 17:43

I agree about the schools issue. I understand that for some it is a concern but for the vast majority of children and families schools reopening is a good thing for many reasons.

I also agree that we can’t censor the definition of good news too much. As long as there is no doom mongering and we are sticking to facts then we are meeting our objective.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/01/2021 17:43

Quokkas are definitely a thing. They are Australian.

tobee · 19/01/2021 17:46

Loving all the animal (and free cuddles) pictures here!

Great re case numbers this week v last!

littleowl1 · 19/01/2021 17:46

I have updated the barometer on the www.covidmessenger.com homepage and I'm every so pleased to see yet more councils have turned "green" today!

Out of 315 councils in England, we now have 285 councils with falling cases week-over-week.

Which is an extraordinary turnaround!

Hard to believe we had 314 councils with rising cases a few weeks ago.

The full table of councils is on the homepage too for anyone who wishes to check their area. It's also really quite amazing to see the how quickly rates are dropping back in some of the worst hit councils.

Barking and Dagenham being a case in point.

I appreciate the absolute levels are very, very high, but the week-over-week drop in Barking and Dagenham is staggering nonetheless. Really great news.

Speaking as someone who regularly uses "Spiffing" and "Bung ho" I approve of your language.

FuzzyPuffling · 19/01/2021 17:47

Great news littleowl1

[quote Pomegranatespompom]@herecomesthsun I can’t see any unsympathetic comments ??[/quote]
Stuff like
"
Is it me or is the rest of mn looking slightly more sane again now?"

and

"I know what you mean, there are still people trying their best to spread doom and gloom ..., they make their "I'm afraid" assertions and a whole load of people turn up telling them not to be daft.

I wonder when we'll get to a point where there's not a single post all day in active threads about Covid?"

Interesting on a day when we have the highest [retracted] - I mean, I am feeling very positive about the vaccines and very hopeful about life going back to normal, but people who are concerned on other parts of the boards are not necessarily "daft" and some of the news today was [retracted]

Still hoping we are coming through the worst of it, that the (very real) situation in ICUs calms down and we can have the best possible recovery later in the year.

We don't have to pretend that the bad things aren't happening in order to look forward to the good things.

& I'm all for the safe re-opening of schools. (NB "safe")

TheChineseChicken · 19/01/2021 17:59

What are the retracted bits in the post?

MarshaBradyo · 19/01/2021 18:00

There is a notorious ‘I’m afraid’ poster so I agree with pp

We know the reality.

MarshaBradyo · 19/01/2021 18:01

I don’t get the point of [retracted] on this positive thread

Just don’t post if it’s too positive?

herecomesthsun · 19/01/2021 18:03

I didn't want to say on this thread as it is rather sad. Are you talking about me @MarshaBradyo perhaps?

I really don't think of myself as afraid, rather as someone who follows the science and takes the situation seriously.

And is looking forward very much to vaccines changing the current situation.
