I am happy to do it but can’t till after dinner- hopefully we have enough thread left to last!

Furries · 23/01/2021 18:20

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel - yes, that’s definitely what I meant. Just links to sites that provide updated stats etc.

Sorry @FuzzyPuffling - didn’t explain myself too well. If your attention span is gnat-sized, I dread to think what mine is 🤣

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/01/2021 18:34

I’ve been feeling so much positivity lately I’m sure it’s down to this thread.

Thank you all.

FuzzyPuffling · 23/01/2021 18:38

Countess Job's yours!

Scotlandg You'll get plenty of warning of a new thread. Usually do anyway. We try not to just run out and hope people can find us!

And now Cheltenham have scored against mighty Man City in the FA Cup!!! GrinGrin

Sorry City fans. Just a bit amazed!

FuzzyPuffling · 23/01/2021 19:05

Go underdogs! (not a football fan!)

I have zero interest in football but I love when bbc website headlines are about eg football and therefore nothing to do with covid. Like a small piece of normality
Inastatus · 23/01/2021 19:11

@tobee - DH and I just happened to be watching the match at the time they scored (not huge footie fans) but how brilliant! Would love it if they won.

tobee · 23/01/2021 19:13

I just love watching live sporting events. And the bits of sport, restricted as they are, have been a great distraction during Covid!

tobee · 23/01/2021 19:13

Boo! City equalised!

tobee · 23/01/2021 19:27

It was fun while it lasted! Smile

Jeremy Farrar has just tweeted this;

www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2021/01/23/2163109/0/en/Colchicine-reduces-the-risk-of-COVID-19-related-complications.html

Positive news; oral medication colchicine can be given to Covid patients pre hospitalisation - reduces deaths by 44%, and hospitalisations by 25%.

I haven't read the full abstract but I trust pretty much anything Jeremy says!

goldpendant · 23/01/2021 19:31

Oh sorry @feelingverylazytoday - see that you linked it earlier - great news!

Good News part 7

Frequentflier · 23/01/2021 20:14

The pace of vaccination is very cheering. Dh is vulnerable and we are Asian, but now I see he might get it by March or so. I will just stay in till then. Gives me something to work towards

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/01/2021 20:21

March isn’t long now!

Pomegranatespompom · 23/01/2021 20:38

@Frequentflier I bet it will be sooner. I think the higher risk for BAME is associated with job and housing as well as health issues. Your DH may not be as at risk as the predicted in the algorithm 🤞

Frequentflier · 23/01/2021 20:48

He is 52 and diabetic , so that is where the risk comes in :) Sorry, I know this thread is for good news only . I was very depressed by Boris' presser yesterday, but this thread has helped a lot. Just need to hunker down and wait for the vaccination, whenever he gets it. And not go on the other threads.

FuzzyPuffling · 23/01/2021 20:51

Frequentflier don't apologise, we're all allowed our wobbles. One of the good things about these threads is that we can wobble ( without the drama!), take a deep breath and try again. Hang on in there.

JemimaPyjamas · 24/01/2021 15:15

Hi everyone, I'm having a bit of a down day today. Not hugely but there just seems too much uncertainty around. It also might be as I am not fully understanding a lot of what I am reading. I know newspapers are also trying to grab attention with evocative headlines, so wonder if a lot of it is just that. Hence, can one of you help me out with this...

I have seen that JVT said that even those vaccinated can still carry and transmit the virus. However, I thought that the links that were posted earlier this week on the thread about transmission from Israel looked 'promising' that it will stop transmission too. Or is it that nobody knows, or that nobody in the UK will stick their neck out and say it slows or limits transmission as it'll mean that people start breaking lockdown rules far faster than we / the NHS can cope with?

If transmission isn't as effected as is hoped, does that mean we have to wear masks etc for much much longer, even if the majority of over 50's have been vaccinated?

I think I've been reading too much, and this thread is brilliant, and managed to get myself confused.

So, if someone can translate everything in idiots terms, I'd be most grateful!

FuzzyPuffling · 24/01/2021 15:20

Jemima, I think it is just that we don;t know yet!
As I see it, The vaccines were designed to protect the individual, and as such may not reduce transmission. But we don't know as we haven't had time to look at data.Which is not a bad thing, just those scientists not willing to stick their necks out until it is all properly investigated.

Seems to me, if the virus is coming up against lots more people who are functionally immune to it, it will have harder time finding new vectors.

Some of the early data from Israel was looking promising. Don't panic!

And we've mostly wandered off to the Good News 7 thread, so please join us there.
