1.5 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

They’ve vaccinated 1.5 million people so far and the target is 13.9 million people (the top 4 groups in the attached graphic) by the middle of February, according to ITV. It’ll be a fantastic achievement if they can hit that target.

The government will be providing daily updates on the vaccine rollout progress from Monday 11th January.

It’s such a relief that they’ve got this vaccine and are rolling it out quickly across the country. Considering that it’s only 8th January today, I truly feel like 13.9 million by mid February is achievable.

Come on, let’s do this!

OMG!

Because of reporting fluctuations it is hard to tell with cases and deaths what is happening day to day so I always compare with the week before. And today, for the first time in a very long time, compared to last Sunday....

DEATHS ARE DOWN!!!!!

610 vs last week’s number of 679.

Too early to be vaccine related but it does mean that lockdown - miserable as it is for all of us - is working.

I’m so relieved.

MargosKaftan · 24/01/2021 17:12

Am I right that on current levels, even allowing for the new people numbers dropping when they have to start doing 2nd vaccine, we should have half the adults in the UK at least with the 1st jab by Easter? Yay!

psychomath · 24/01/2021 17:20

Wonderful news Mumoftwo Smile

Londt · 24/01/2021 17:22

I found it tricky to find the weekend figures buried in the thread Angry but cannot believe how quickly the total is going up each day! These super jabbing jabbers should be incredibly proud of themselves.

Shall we take bets on which day will reveal the big 10 million mark?

I am going to think big. If we vaccinate at around 500k a day this week. Then 10 million announced 1st February Wine

Now I am correcting what doesn't need to be correctedConfused

Jinglealltheway22 · 24/01/2021 18:06

There are several more mass vaccination sites coming online next week so I hope we'll be comfortably over 500k a day soon.

So 10 days to vaccinate another 5 million - by Friday 29 January - that'll be over 11 million on first doses before the end of Jan!

I think that would be fabulous news! X

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 24/01/2021 18:30

Is there enough vaccine being delivered to keep up with the current vaccination rates? I really hope so.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/01/2021 18:38

I get the impression the government are being pretty cagey about how much they’ve got- it’s possible we won’t be able to get a clear answer to that question.
As far as I am concerned every day they keep up those rates is a win.

OooErrThor · 24/01/2021 18:58

Fabulous news, shortly it will be 1 million people every two days.

The vaccination programme really is a success story, it's nice to have some positivity for a change Grin

Cuddling57 · 24/01/2021 18:58

This is a good thread.
My ddad got his call up for this coming week. I feel so happy Grin!

That's my impression also.

I read an article somewhere that the vaccine is basically made in big vats (green, bubbly, stirred by mad scientists) and then stored before being tested and bottled. ANd that batch testing/vial manufacture and filling are the rate limiting steps.

Which presumably means that there are great vats of the stuff somewhere all bubbling away to themselves. Hopefully that will be enough to ride out the anticipated fluctuations in manufacture?

There's a page and a bit to go. I'm going to place a pin in the number SEVEN to be in the title of the next thread.

lunar1 · 24/01/2021 19:13

6.8 million vaccines given in total 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

1.5 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!
CaveMum · 24/01/2021 19:15

When the new thread is started I think we should all place our bets on how many people vaccinated we will have reached by the time that thread is full! This thread has lasted 27 days (assuming it fills up tomorrow) but I suspect the next one may fill faster and obviously vaccination rates are climbing at a much faster rate than when this thread began.

Off to crunch some numbers...then probably just make a wild guess!

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/01/2021 19:16

Wow so 10% of the population already vaccinated?

buttery81 · 24/01/2021 19:22

@bendmeoverbackwards 12% of the UK adult population have now received their first dose Smile

The vaccination programme really is a success story, it's nice to have some positivity for a change

Hear hear! (Or is it here here?)

Either way it’s great! Grin

Psychologist generally agree it is healthier to focus on the little joys in life than get caught up in negative technicalities.
This!!!
Well said - so little of this in evidence elsewhere

Blessex · 24/01/2021 19:29

@psychomath I completely agree with you that the people in care homes that have died after their first dose very likely caught it with the first 2 weeks when immunity hadn’t kicked in. I am currently mighty pissed off with newspapers like The Mirror and The Guardian (the latter has also pissed Chris Whitty off massively too). It is completely irresponsible to report badly on the vaccine. They should be completely discredited.

The Guardian had a report that the Pfizer vaccine was only c 30% effective after the first dose. As Chris Whitty says - that is simply not true. It is 89% (when you remove those people who got seriously ill within 14 days of receiving the vaccine eg before it had kicked in). And the second dose takes that to 91%. Which is why they are perusing a strategy of getting vastly more peope vaccinated at 89% with the first dose. It just makes total population level sense. Imagine you had the choice. Your mum and dad both vaccinated at 89% efficacy. Or choose one of them to be vaccinated at 91% and the other not at all. Think
about before shouting down the approach.

The Mirror - that was such a vague article. No data about when those people had got their first jabs. But as @psychomath said earlier - it is very likely they caught it within the first 2 weeks.

These newspapers should be ashamed of themselves. As any journalist who keeps asking ‘when will schools go back’? THEY DON’T KNOW YET.

Anyway media rant over.

The numbers today are tremendous. Nearly half a million a day! Wooooohooooo

sashagabadon · 24/01/2021 19:35

The guardians reporting has been generally shocking.

That’s such a good way of putting it @Blessex, I hadn’t thought of it like that.

I gave up reading the Mirror article - there were so many adverts I could barely find the text!
