1.5 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

They’ve vaccinated 1.5 million people so far and the target is 13.9 million people (the top 4 groups in the attached graphic) by the middle of February, according to ITV. It’ll be a fantastic achievement if they can hit that target.

The government will be providing daily updates on the vaccine rollout progress from Monday 11th January.

It’s such a relief that they’ve got this vaccine and are rolling it out quickly across the country. Considering that it’s only 8th January today, I truly feel like 13.9 million by mid February is achievable.

Come on, let’s do this!

@Frazzled2207

An mp retweeted a tweet earlier boasting that the uk has vaccinated more people in the uk in one day than France has in total. Whereas I agree that we’re not responsible for eu’s strategy, it pretty tasteless IMO to gloat about this. It is in all our interests for all countries to be able to make quick progress in vaccinating. What happens in the uk might benefit individuals but isn’t going to make a significant change in the direction of the pandemic generally.
Yes a bit tasteless

I do have a thing about staying ahead of Germany though. I think because they are seen as the most efficient EU country. It just says in my head we are doing very good.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2021 13:46

While the snow will delay some vaccines, I think a lot of centres are only running a few days a week at present because of supply. This should give lots of potential for catching up quickly.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 24/01/2021 13:47

75% of over 80s are now done Smile

That is more than the original expected take up I think.

There is already evidence of a decrease in hospitalisation in the vaccinated age groups. Although there’s an overall drop in general so it might not be entirely attributable to the vaccine. Still good to see hospitalisations coming down though! 😊

It's a stunning take up really, given there will be more who would like it when they can.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 24/01/2021 14:05

Ah it’s a shame this thread has taken a turn. It was such a lovely positive place to come and feel happy. Just for a moment. Sad

Blessex · 24/01/2021 14:07

@Frazzled2207 Matt Hancock said it on Andrew Marr this morning. I was watching with my Dutch DH and he was happy this was said. Because in his opinion the rollout in the EU is appalling and they are not even talking about it much. In the Netherlands they are more focussed on stopping flights to and from the U.K. A political decision seeing that 20% of cases in the Netherlands are already the new strain and the trains are still running back and forth. They are diverting attention away from their appallingly slow vaccination programme.

Blessex · 24/01/2021 14:09

Ah and supply is just one part of it. My Moroccan friend says that Moroccan are standing ready to vaccine with centres ready but they have no vaccines. And they are looking at France who have supplies but can’t seem to get them into arms. They are not happy to say the least.

psychomath · 24/01/2021 14:10

I made a couple of graphs to estimate the proportion of deaths in the past week among each age group over 30 (numbers under 30 were so low they weren't worth including), by combining the deaths per 100k heat map on the government dashboard with the age distribution of the UK population in 2019. This should give some indication of how much effect vaccinating each age group will have on the death rate, assuming the single dose is effective in preventing death. Given that 75% of over 80s have now been vaccinated, we should hopefully see a substantial reduction in deaths in the next 4-6 weeks due to the vaccine, in addition to the effect of lockdown.

(Note that the graph shows the total number of deaths and NOT the mortality for individuals in each age group - there are far more people in e.g. the 70-74 category than the 90+ category, so even though the number of deaths is fairly similar, individual risk is much lower for 70-74 year olds.)

The U.K. does seem to be sharing it’s supply with British overseas territories. There is an article page 2 of the Sunday times that Gibraltar and Falkland island and Cayman Islands as examples have or will soon receive doses proportional to their populations and the U.K. has a duty to do this which is good. I imagine France, Spain, etc will do likewise with their overseas territories too.
I would like to see us help out Republic of Ireland if they ask and we are in a position to do so as we do share a border and a common travel area with them.

Sweetnessandbite · 24/01/2021 14:13

I love watching the over 75's and some ecv young adults faces with the relief of getting the vaccine. A massive light at the end of this awful tunnel.

Motorina · 24/01/2021 14:16

Personal good news: my father has just made a vaccine appointment for Friday. My mother (a few years younger) is going to go along in the hopes they'll do her too.

Frazzled2207 · 24/01/2021 14:20

Oh I didn’t realise that it was him that said it. Plonker.

Apols to clarify 443k is England only. I’m not sure the devolved nations update info at weekends. Either way it will be close to the half a million mark. Yey!

countrybumpkintocityslicker · 24/01/2021 14:39

Some people who have had the first jab have since died (care home residents).

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/care-home-residents-dying-after-23373801

Doesn't say how many specifically.

Article is also not as positive as we would hope for about the delayed second jab.

I would never hope for positivity about health matters from a tabloid, or any other newspaper. It doesn't get clicks. And the 'information' the article contains is so vague as to be useless.

I think once we get a certain percentage done we will help Ireland

Then other places once our adult population is mostly done

We have over brought so much that once more are approved and supply is no issue. That is definitely going to happen

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2021 14:51

oh my goodness, I wasn't expecting them to keep up the pace yesterday! Wow!!!

Any positive advice from people who've had the vaccine so far? I've read that some Russian scientists suggest avoiding alcohol so the immune response isn't depressed. Are we supposed to stay off NSAIDS? I know we aren't supposed to stop any steroids.

I've told dh I'll need to rest so my body can focus on making lots of lovely antibodies. Wink

I think I might need to do some digging to see what is recommended.
