1.5 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

They’ve vaccinated 1.5 million people so far and the target is 13.9 million people (the top 4 groups in the attached graphic) by the middle of February, according to ITV. It’ll be a fantastic achievement if they can hit that target.

The government will be providing daily updates on the vaccine rollout progress from Monday 11th January.

It’s such a relief that they’ve got this vaccine and are rolling it out quickly across the country. Considering that it’s only 8th January today, I truly feel like 13.9 million by mid February is achievable.

Come on, let’s do this!

443k that is fantastic 🥳

I thought it would be a weekend dip too

Really think with new centres opening next week it will be 500k a day

DdraigGoch · 24/01/2021 15:08

@Frazzled2207

An mp retweeted a tweet earlier boasting that the uk has vaccinated more people in the uk in one day than France has in total. Whereas I agree that we’re not responsible for eu’s strategy, it pretty tasteless IMO to gloat about this. It is in all our interests for all countries to be able to make quick progress in vaccinating. What happens in the uk might benefit individuals but isn’t going to make a significant change in the direction of the pandemic generally.
I agree that celebrating another's (relative) misfortune is rather unkind.

However, if the situation were the other way around and it was the European scheme which had delivered instead of the British one, do you really think that there wouldn't be scores of European politicians (and a few Guardian columnists) using it to make as much political capital as possible?

Good luck.
MaddieElla · 24/01/2021 15:32

No. Not good luck. This thread has been a godsend to many until very recently.

There are plenty of other threads where people can score political points and call Boris Johnson all the names under the sun.

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2021 15:32

Lewis Goodall @lewis_goodall
No doubt the UK is doing well on the vaccines front but long term we probably need to realise that the “World Cup of Vaccines” prism isn’t very helpful. Our biggest neighbour not vaccinating people quickly isn’t just their problem, it’s ours too.

That goes for the whole world. If we can see anything at the moment it’s the danger of variants arising where prevalence is high. Those variants may prove resistant or semi-resistant to vaccines. We’re not truly out of this until the planet is, or at least has it under control.

Moreover we might need to revisit how we’re talking about this and say “given one dose” rather than “vaccinated”. Behavioural scientists I’ve spoken to are concerned that the word “vaccinated” while we’re primarily giving one dose risks giving people a false sense of security.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 24/01/2021 15:35

I reckon most people here understand that it is only first dose

Plus people frequently refer to first and second doses

Maybe let us celebrate the small victories??

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 24/01/2021 15:41

Psychologist generally agree it is healthier to focus on the little joys in life than get caught up in negative technicalities.

Anyway the vaccine is showing more evidence in Israel of reducing serious illness and hospitalisation. That is three weeks later so after just one dose.

bumbleymummy · 24/01/2021 15:42

We say our children are ‘vaccinated’ even if they’ve only received the first dose of their childhood vaccines. ‘Fully vaccinated’ would suggest they’ve had all the required doses IMO.

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2021 15:49

Lets ignore the behavioural scientists cos that makes us feel better.

Ok.

I think you kind of prove the point with that attitude tbh.

ScribblingPixie · 24/01/2021 15:57

Such brilliant news. Although I'm in category 8, I'm actually starting to feel like it's my turn soon. I read an article yesterday that said, like with the flu jab, immunity can be improved if you do arm exercises in the hours before your jab so I MUST remember to do that.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2021 16:01

This thread is my little candle light of hope in the pandemic. I don't understand why other people think they know what is better for my mental health needs than I do.

When I want to look at other perspectives, I look at other threads.

RTB, I have a lot of respect for you, you put in a huge amount of effort into topics I'm interested in, but you are making me angry right now. It is simply not your job to try and police how we are trying to cope.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2021 16:02

Arm exercises?! I will look that one up. Grin

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2021 16:04

Equally its not your job to police how anyone else behaves either...

buttery81 · 24/01/2021 16:07

Pfffft... this just goes to show that some people really do look for the negative and something to criticise in anything!

Let’s get back to the positives: the UK has now vaccinated a staggering 6,353,321 people up to and including yesterday, 23rd January. That’s 1 in every 8.3 adults in the UK population!

Just think - this time next week we will be approaching (or even at) the 9 million mark, which will mean that over 1 in 6 of the UK’s adult population will have been vaccinated! Incredible!!

We’ve now overtaken Bahrain in the global tables and are the third fastest country in the world in terms of vaccines administered:

As I said before, there really is light at the end of the tunnel now - and it’s getting brighter by the day Smile

It's not anyone's place to police others. But I wouldn't sleep well at night knowing I was actively coming on to a thread that people take comfort in, and shitting all over it.

I'll now be scrolling past such comments as if they weren't there.

Buttery, and others. Continue...Smile

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 24/01/2021 16:18

Love the arm exercises. God knows if that really works but why not give them a try.

Amazing we are third in the world with the percentage of population vaccinated (not that it is a competition). If you check out the population size of the first two then you realise we are actually doing even better.

Daddeee · 24/01/2021 16:18

493,013 new doses have been administered since yesterday (22 Jan). This includes 491,970 first and 1,043 second doses

psychomath · 24/01/2021 16:18

@countrybumpkintocityslicker

Some people who have had the first jab have since died (care home residents).

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/care-home-residents-dying-after-23373801

Doesn't say how many specifically.

Article is also not as positive as we would hope for about the delayed second jab.

The program only began 6.5 weeks ago with initially small numbers of people, and we know that immunity doesn't kick in at all until at least two weeks later, then takes longer after that to ramp up fully. Then there's a lag time between when people catch covid and when they die. The vast majority of people dying now, even if they've been vaccinated, will be people for whom immunity hadn't been established when they caught covid. It's simply too early to tell yet how well the vaccines work (based on real world data from the UK, anyway - all the other indicators look promising).
OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2021 16:19

Hah, and there was me predicting the title of the next thread would be '6 million people already!!!'.

That is just brilliant. All those people who are now less likely to end up seriously illSmile

That’s a fair point and I agree. Still doesn’t make it ok to gloat about another country’s failures though when frankly we’ve had quite a few of those at home.

Here’s a Uk chart for today which is even better than the england one I posted upthread.
