Will he be on time? What will he say?

OP posts:

The BBC put an article up/modified an article 5 minutes ago which states this:

Boris Johnson is expected to announce a set of new national restrictions for England, similar to the March lockdown, in a televised address at 20:00 GMT.

The PM is likely to urge the public to follow the new rules from midnight.

It is expected people will be told to work from home if possible and schools will close for most pupils

This morning on R4 the health secretary was quoting as saying that we 'need to behave as if we are infected'

lcdododo · 04/01/2021 19:12

@WhoLettheCatOut

He won't really close schools with 12 hours notice will he?! I've packed a bag ready but I don't want to have to sort out childcare once my kids are in bed 😢
He did it with less than 12 hours notice last time
Kazzyhoward · 04/01/2021 19:14

@AKissAndASmile

Do we think construction and manufacturing will be allowed to continue? Did they continue in the March lockdown?
They were allowed to continue but many closed. Some closed because they couldn't make their workplaces "covid safe". Others closed because the BBC and other media got their reporting wrong and gave the message that it was only "essential" or "key" workers who could work and/or use public transport, hence initially closing and then re-opening a few weeks later when they realised they never had to stop in the first place.
MotherDanger · 04/01/2021 19:15

@Madwife123

The fact that my child’s primary school has already emailed asking if need a keyworker place makes me think he’s going to announce school closures.
Can confirm school leadership teams know nothing yet!
sadpapercourtesan · 04/01/2021 19:15

We'll be using this to take the edge off the howling despair...

Can also confirm this.
We are just trying to make sure we are only about 50 steps behind rather than 1,000

Why not? They decided to extend furlough with less than 12 hours notice at the end of October, after huge numbers of employees had been made redundant unnecessarily. Last minute knee-jerk reactions have been Boris's way ever since last March.
Livingtothefull · 04/01/2021 19:16

I don't know why we have to wait until 8pm to find out what is going on....the info seems to have leaked out to the BBC and other media already but we are still being made to wait until our great leader has spoken.

My DS has severe learning disabilities and is expecting to go back to his school tomorrow, if it turns out he can't go I am not looking forward to trying to explain it to him. He does not cope well with change & I will need to deal with the fallout from that whilst trying to work from home.

rainbowstardrops · 04/01/2021 19:17

I'm already in tier 4

I work in a primary school that is 'closed' .... that pisses me off because we don't bloody close

My husband is self employed and will get next to no help

But hey ho

LaurieFairyCake · 04/01/2021 19:19

Thankfully the nation is NOT split in two, the anti's are a small but vocal minority

There are 3 reasons why we NEED lockdowns:

  1. The virus is unpredictable- really unpredictable- you can't know if you're going to need a hospital until you do - MANY previously healthy 30/40's in London hospitals
  1. 1 in 10 have Long Covid - that is going to be a HUGE PROBLEM for the economy in the future
  1. The NHS is over run - we're at threat level 5 - people are going to be dying in corridors
Kazzyhoward · 04/01/2021 19:20

@Wheresthebeach

Nearly everyone is Tier 4 at the moment. So limited things he can do - close schools, close restaurants even for takeout, reduce 'essential' shop lists, out once a day for a walk. Basically back to March, which along with a million other things, was never going to happen. How he can close schools, a day after saying they were safe, and look himself in the mirror is beyond me.
I think it's time for curfews and a complete ban on foreign travel (with strictly enforced quarantine on everyone coming back in from abroad). We've faffed around with the "low hanging fruit" such as hairdressers, non food shops, etc which have done a lot of damage to small businesses with very little benefit. Need a different approach. Also back to essential travel only on public transport.
ConfusedcomMum · 04/01/2021 19:23

Basically this.

There is an expectation he will cancel all exams too.

No you are wrong . Just someone who actually listens to what is said . And someone who tries not to politicise a pandemic or use some of the disgusting bullying language that posters use on here .

I have actually been a Labour voter ..... until Corbyn.

So jog on.

Unsure33 · 04/01/2021 19:28

@LaurieFairyCake

I agree .

I do really feel for pupils though because they at the moment according to the figures are not more at risk of being ill with the virus .

It is them passing it on that’s the problem . I am not sure how many will accept this .

Unsure33 · 04/01/2021 19:31

@Kazzyhoward

The problem is if even if they give some notice of changing tiers looked what happened in London .

People fled taking the new mutation with them .

And after visits this morning , there was a meeting today .

boatyardblues · 04/01/2021 19:45

I’ve seen that Boris bingo card in about 3 places now. If Boris is late starting tonight, it will be his speechwriting team doing a last minute find & replace to swap all of those phrases out for something else.

About the long covid thing.... Its one in 10 sympto. Atic cases has long covid... Considering well over 50% could a symptomatic it's much more like 1 in 20 or 30 will have long covid, which would bring it much more inline with other illnesses.

Hope not! Me and some others on a WhatsApp group are playing that game in a bit lol.

He’ll have brushed his hair with a toffee apple and have that smirk on his face as he denies any responsibility for the mess we are in.

damn dh and I using it as a drinking game
boatyardblues · 04/01/2021 19:59

I think Boris should let the stylists who did the Panem scenes in Hunger Games style his hair. He’s half way there with the mad blonde fluff.

@Unsure33 actually you are polticising a pandemic by standing up for Johnson and co's woeful mismanagement of the crisis just because they are the party you voted in.

How can anyone defend the absolute shambles they have delivered?
