Will he be on time? What will he say?

OP posts:
lovestea · 04/01/2021 18:17

BBC1 is pushing back Eastenders and showing BJ at 8pm. Just read this on The Guardian live feed.

IEat · 04/01/2021 18:20

He’ll be on time if it’s been pre-recorded!

ListeningQuietly · 04/01/2021 18:20

Lockdown does not exist
unless

  • all takeaways close
  • all supermarkets close
  • all internet shopping is stopped
  • all care visits in people's homes stop
  • petrol and tobacco shops close

as there are MILLIONS of people out at work every day

  • farming
  • food processing
  • cooking
  • delivering
  • caring

who allow the keyboard warriors to sit safely at home Hmm

How do you know?
Wheresthebeach · 04/01/2021 18:24

Nearly everyone is Tier 4 at the moment. So limited things he can do - close schools, close restaurants even for takeout, reduce 'essential' shop lists, out once a day for a walk. Basically back to March, which along with a million other things, was never going to happen. How he can close schools, a day after saying they were safe, and look himself in the mirror is beyond me.

Jeremy Hunt is emerging from the shadows...

Callipygion · 04/01/2021 18:29

Game of Boris Bingo later anyone?

I'm not sure even China stopped people eating and smoking or putting petrol in their cars to go to work if they were an essential worker.

But my point is that those who support lockdowns
seem to expect Deliveroo and Ocado to magically not be locked down ....

There are still things that can close - schools obviously, childcare, organised outside sport for under 18s, playgrounds, zoos etc. Quite a lot.
CheetasOnFajitas · 04/01/2021 18:39

And why do the leaks and journalists never mention nurseries. I’m assuming they will close if schools do, but then again they aren’t currently closed in London despite the primaries being closed. If I have to figure out something with my 18 month old from tomorrow, it would be nice to know before 8pm. Only someone who never has to consider childcare would do this.

This! Totally agree @Meredithgrey1!
I bet the announcement tonight doesn’t mention early years. It’s bizarre, given that that age of child is the most impossible to look after while simultaneously working. Either tell us that you have a strong policy reason for keeping nurseries open when primaries closed, or just close them so we have something concrete to tell our employers and let us make arrangements. I pity the management of my son’s nursery, trying to negotiate their way through this.

mumwon · 04/01/2021 18:44

@Brainwave89 #sack whitty is full of people saying you shouldn't but sacking Boris...

AKissAndASmile · 04/01/2021 18:47

Do we think construction and manufacturing will be allowed to continue? Did they continue in the March lockdown?

I don't understand the point you're making? I'm sure that killing off the population would be very effective at eradicating the virus, but equally I think doing so might be missing the point of trying to protect as many lives as possible?
Livelovebehappy · 04/01/2021 18:52

I really hope it’s total lockdown. Borders closed, none essential shops closed (none of this arsing about with having places like the Range open, and garden centres), schools and unis closed. For at least a month. Just want this to be done with now, and if we have to suffer stiffer rules, then so be it. Let’s get on with it.

@randomer

He will announce that alas,he is no longer able to lead this sovereign nation and therefore a cabinet has been created which will guide our blessed land through these troubled times.Mr Starmer will be at the helm and Mr.Brown will be manning the portholes.
Thanks, @randomer for making me smile.

They were allowed to continue in March but many of them shut for a time either to become Covid safe or due to supply chain issues. Haven't seen any leaks to say they'll be closed this time.
Unsure33 · 04/01/2021 19:04

They said schools were safe for students and children .

It’s the mixing of households that’s the problem

They explained why they wanted to keep schools open .

For mental health reasons exams etc etc

It’s not a u turn . They always said the schools would be the last thing they would close and they would resist as long as possible .

Now that tier 4. Does not appear to be working then they have to put in more restrictions.

More worrying is supermarkets where a lot of people are picking up the virus . Not a lot we can do about that and it proves the new virus is more transmissible.

Our local supermarket has obviously been open all the time . This week 60 members of staff isolated.

WhoLettheCatOut · 04/01/2021 19:08

He won't really close schools with 12 hours notice will he?! I've packed a bag ready but I don't want to have to sort out childcare once my kids are in bed 😢

WhoLettheCatOut · 04/01/2021 19:10

Agreed @StCharlotte. Current restrictions would be much more effective if enforced. Mind you there's so much vagueness that monitoring who could WFH would be difficulty!

Madwife123 · 04/01/2021 19:11

The fact that my child’s primary school has already emailed asking if need a keyworker place makes me think he’s going to announce school closures.

Changeismyname · 04/01/2021 19:12

@Meredithgrey1

What kind of idiot announces schools closures at 8pm (if that’s what he’s doing, which it seems to be).

Have you seen our PM? Precisely that kind of idiot.
