Is BoJo expected to make an official announcement today or is it just speculation?

I've been in tier four since 19th dec and the supermarkets are fine.
One store didn't have much fresh veg or fruit on Saturday morning , but everything else was fine.
With the schools still shut in my area , it feels as it did back in March. Key worker and any vulnerable children are going in from tomorrow.
Online learning should be better this time around ( they hope)

Sassenach85 · 04/01/2021 13:08

Yes Scotland, we have an announcement at 2pm from NS

EeeehElsie · 04/01/2021 13:10

I'm absolutely pig sick of people blaming the 'non compliant' public for the spread. Millions of people have just spent Christmas apart from loved ones for the greater good. Yes, there will always be a few people who think they're above the rules but the morally superior types blaming others need to consider that millions of people are still going to work, because they have no choice. Carers, retail staff, delivery staff, teachers, health care workers, binmen, food processing staff... All have no choice but to work. All those millions of people in close quarters through no fault of their own, every day and night, will have far more of an effect on infection numbers than a handful of idiots having mates over for a party. Also, viruses are designed to spread, that's what they do, and this one is terribly good at what it does.

The shambolic handling of it all has hardly helped, either.

Daisy829 · 04/01/2021 13:12

He will probably leave it a couple of days so he can try to save some face & then blame the science.

itsgettingweird · 04/01/2021 13:14

He's always following the science.

He does actually follow it.

Just a week later than everyone else.

I wonder why this is? Is he a slow reader, indecisive, not trusting fully of the scientists?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 04/01/2021 13:15

A pm wouldn't resign in middle of a pandemic as it would be even more choas
Kier called for a national lockdown rather than say he backed the schools and union really which was disappointing from him

I agree. A relative was saying the same on the text , until I pointed out that if the electricity and gas workers were all at home and they were not at work , he couldn't wfh and how cold we would all be. Not to mention the retail staff ( they have been great) and some of which work in places like the range or Wilkinson's which really could shut down and haven't done. People still need to leave the house to go to work , new variant or not.

When he's not picking outlier scientists who are saying things he likes more and about whom all the other scientists are going 'they are full of bull'

He's definitely slow of thinking.

KarenMarlow3 · 04/01/2021 13:17

Resignation would be nice. Supposing he was to do that - who would you like to take his place?
I think my eleven year old grandson would do a better job.

Allispretty · 04/01/2021 13:18

@RedToothBrush

Jeremy Hunt *@Jeremy*_Hunt Time to act: thread on why we need to close schools, borders, and ban all household mixing RIGHT AWAY.

To those arguing winter is always like this in the NHS: you are wrong. I faced four serious winter crises as Health Sec and the situation now is off-the-scale worse than any of those.

It’s true that we often had to cancel elective care in Jan to protect emergency care but that too is under severe pressure with record trolley waits for the very sickest patients

Health Service Journal @HSJnews
Exclusive: Leaks reveal record waits for emergency care due to covid pressures

Jeremy Hunt @Jeremy_Hunt
Even more worryingly fewer heart attack patients appear to be presenting in ICUs, perhaps because they are not dialling 999 when they need to

Full credit to NHS for keeping cancer services open but in Wave 1 there was still a 2/3 drop in cancer appts: people didn’t come forward to GPs or want to go to hospitals, with many potentially avoidable cancer deaths. We hoped to avoid that this time but now looking unlikely.

Excellent analysis by @NeilDotObrien shows the reason for all this pressure: 1/3 more hospital beds now taken up nationally by covid patients than in Wave 1 (50% in SE). Having a new strain in the middle of winter is clearly having a massive impact
twitter.com/NeilDotObrien/status/1345855146660683776
(This guy is a tory MP btw)

No 1 lesson is countries that act early & decisively save lives & get their economies back to normal faster. Wuhan is now free of any restrictions - but Uni of Southampton show if they’d locked down 1 week earlier they would’ve reduced infections by 2/3

We therefore cannot afford to wait: all schools should be closed, international travel stopped, household mixing limited and the tier system reviewed so that the highest tier really does bring down infection levels (as with the first lockdown).

Also with vacancy levels at 2-3 times normal because of self-isolation & covid, NHS staff who are risking their lives for us MUST be put at the front of the queue for vaccines. This will stop our hospitals falling over and help keep their patients safe. It is also our moral duty.

The good news is that unlike before these restrictions will be time limited to the 12 weeks or so it will take to get the vaccine out to those most vulnerable to covid - so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I know all these things will be under consideration with decisions potentially imminent. My point is in the face of exponential growth even waiting an extra day causes many avoidable deaths so these plans must now be urgently accelerated.

There's a sick irony in this coming from Hunt who ground down the NHS... but if he's saying it, theres a) merit to it b) growing pressure even within the Tory ranks for Johnson to get off his arse and do something. And Quick.

Thank goodness that someone is actually highlighting the bigger impact as well. Heart attack patients not presenting to a&e (lets be clear these haven't stopped people are just dying at home)

2/3 drop in cancer appointments...this needs to be highlighted more how many deaths are the government going to have on their hands over the next 5 years

LacyEdge · 04/01/2021 13:21

It’s blowing my mind that Hunt is now the voice of reason about the NHS. Cognitive dissonance. Still, any port in a storm.

JimmyTheBrave · 04/01/2021 13:21

@allIhatemyseleffordoingthis ah yes, I see. I misunderstood.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 04/01/2021 13:23

@Norah8 sadly that is still allowed under tier 4 in Scotland.

Announcements today?
covetingthepreciousthings · 04/01/2021 13:42

Has there been any confirmation of an announcement or press conference for England yet?!

Well, quite
ineedaholidaynow · 04/01/2021 13:44

I've heard Wednesday and some places will be looking at Tier 5 (whatever that will mean) and everywhere else will be Tier 4

dreamingbohemian · 04/01/2021 13:45

The main problem is that this government's only answer is to shut things down completely, once things are really bad.

There are all sorts of public hygiene things you can do to decrease transmission while not shutting down the whole country, as you see in a number of Asian countries. For example to go into a supermarket you have to go through an automated checkpoint that takes your temperature, verifies you're wearing a mask, and makes you sanitise your hands. Disinfectant constantly sprayed in public areas. Really effective tracing operations. Masks everywhere.

Our government is too -- what? lazy? incompetent? stupid? to do anything that detailed though. There is just this sledgehammer approach, shut down huge portions of the country one by one. And when that doesn't work, put all the blame on us.

I KNOW, right? Grin It's like fancying someone you never in a million years should, and feeling all dirty inside. But goddammit, he keeps saying things that I can't help but agree with. I think I might be trauma bonding with him...
the80sweregreat · 04/01/2021 13:56

Why are things not being sprayed down?
The supermarkets were so much cleaner back in the summer but lately they have gone back to being grubbier again ( I know it's winter time and people in and out in the bad weather etc , but I have noticed this)
Investing in more cleaners probably isn't their priority just now, when maybe it should be.
A few places didnt even have sanitizer available or just empty bottles hanging around!
I use my own ,but not everyone does this.

Delatron · 04/01/2021 13:58

I think a press conference is needed but nothing!

We might get an announcement yet...
