Announcements today?

Is BoJo expected to make an official announcement today or is it just speculation?

OP posts:
NikkyD · 04/01/2021 11:39

I think it’ll be a couple of days before an announcement is made.

Chimpanme · 04/01/2021 11:40

@Redbrickwall I feel the same as you. I am literally feeling like I may crack, I have been shielding and I keep getting new dates to stop and then it changes.

The only thing they can make stricter is take away my daily exercise which I absolutely cannot cope without at the moment.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/01/2021 11:42

What word would you prefer we use to mean exactly the same thing as we all understand the word lockdown to mean while knowing that if everyone were to stop doing anything the world would grind to a halt? I'd be ok with any alternative.

Beebityboo · 04/01/2021 11:44

According to what I just read on the BBC, an announcement will be made "in due course" wtaf, he really does hold the public in complete contempt, doesn't he?

ListeningQuietly · 04/01/2021 11:46

Fourte
My point is that a significant part of the country is at work
and they are the ones who live in overcrowded accommodation
and being poorer often have poorer health

COVID will NOT be controlled by the rich staying at home and shopping at Ocado and Amazon and Majestic

so maybe the strategy needs to change completely
towards the South Korean model

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 04/01/2021 11:48

@ListeningQuietly - completely

RedToothBrush · 04/01/2021 11:48
@ListeningQuietly absolutely

I am literally SICK of this shit. Sick of constantly waiting for another announcement of how our lives will be fucked even further.

We were told last night at 5pm that schools aren’t opening today. I’m a teacher and a mum. It’s a fucking nightmare.

I don’t know what else they can stop people doing. Short of banning us from stepping outside our house. This life is an absolute misery
Have you seen the figures?

I am dreading the news in two - three weeks time.

There will be calls for more body bags and mortuary space. And no I am not trying to either scare people nor be a doomonger, killjoy, over priviledged whatsit or anything else.

The reality of over 50,000 new cases a day and rising rapidly when we know hospitals are ALREADY full and there is no slowing in this growth of cases never mind a sign than we are anywhere near a peak means we are into the inevitable now.

We will be worse than Wuhan at peak (who could fly doctors in from elsewhere) or Bergamo at peak (who could fly patients out) because it will be across the entire country.

Waiting for the inevitable announcement which should have been made weeks ago, is the thing that makes me sick. People making excuses for breaking the rules purely because they are bored makes me sick.

We are in very deep doggie do and lots of people still have no idea what the rest of the month and into February is going to look like. And they are going to be shocked when it hits.

It's quite plain what you mean, I'm just wondering what language you'd have the op dance around to say what we all understand her to be saying when asking if the pm will announce the lockdown?

FalseAlarm1 · 04/01/2021 11:51

@Handsoffstrikesagain

It doesn’t matter what he says to us, it will only work if people comply. Where I live I see an ever increasing number of people lot complying. British people do not like being told what to do. If another lockdown needs to happen, it needs to be a harsh one - retailers bending the rules so that they can stay open as an essential retailer need to be stopped, an hour of exercise max, Covid marshals/heavier police presence etc. To be clear, I hate this, I am heavily pregnant and feel very weepy and depressed at the moment, this is just the only way I can see lockdown working.
Absolutely. People are not complying with the current restrictions
BrokenCircle · 04/01/2021 11:52

It’s so pointless! With a lot of schools open today and therefore households mixing by the hundreds, cases and deaths with rise in due course. BJ has blood on his hands.

LQ. Unfortunately you can't switch to that model with the number of cases we currently have.

FWIW, I think things will get so bad that even online shopping could potentially be restricted in the coming weeks.

@Ihatemyseleffordoingthis

He's not going to resign (he's looking to good to his mates atm) We will all be in Tier 4 - that has been made clear this morning, and poss full lockdown. Shielding will be back as they can use it as a ruse to close schools. Today would be better but bet will be Wednesday.
Shielding is already back for us as we're in tier 4 and received a text informing DH to shield, yet the local Primary School is open today.

We chose to keep DC at home (nursery).

Dugee · 04/01/2021 11:58

Sturgeon due to update at lunchtime, as usual expect she will deliver some clear rule changes, BoJo will realise, again, that maybe he'd better say something and alas announce changes at 5.

You beat me to it!

TheGreatWave · 04/01/2021 11:59

only the rich have the luxury of staying at home during lockdowns

I'm at home, not rich, just can do some semblance of the job from home.

Covid: 'No question' restrictions will be tightened, says Boris Johnson

Health Secretary Matt Hancock told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the "old tier system" was "no longer strong enough" to contain the spread of the virus.

Asked what further restrictions would be put in place, Mr Johnson said: "What we have been waiting for is to see the impact of the tier four measures on the virus and it is a bit unclear, still, at the moment.

The old tier system is no longer enough…the figures are only heading in one direction.

These are the words of the health secretary and a health minister.

Boris Johnson says stricter measures are coming, which immediately sparks the questions "when?," and "what are you waiting for?"

Never has the old chant

"Why are we waiting?, we are suffocating"

seemed quite so dark.

RedToothBrush · 04/01/2021 12:00

@Handsoffstrikesagain

I think it’s disgusting tbh falsealarm, constant rule breaking, driving hundreds of miles to go for a walk, throwing parties. Shameful.
But people are bored...
LaMarschallin · 04/01/2021 12:01

No idea about an announcement, but, if there is one, I won't be able to get the following article out of my head while listening to it:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jan/01/boris-johnson-victim-emotions

Randomrebel · 04/01/2021 12:06

Whatever he announces it needs to be quick, clear, decisive and without him grinning, smirking making jokes stammering and getting things wrong and sending out a mixed message. We are tier 4 in the north of England so probably irrelevant pheasant scum to Bojo and his colleagues as outside London.

I am on the shielded list and work PT from home so have only really been going out for walks anyway. My biggest risks are my teens going out to school but one is in GCSE year the other other in the first year of A levels.

Fed up of hearing about people bending/breaking/ignoring/pretending they don’t understand the guidance. With a 40 mile drive for exercise, umpteen pointless shopping trips per week (for something to do), organising play dates and sleepover so little X isn’t lonely, turning a blind eye to teenagers meeting up and hanging out, pretending they are in a bubble when they quite clearly don’t qualify to be in a support bubble with X or Y as both households have two fully functioning adults in etc.

Callipygion · 04/01/2021 12:08

What’s the betting he starts with the words “It is with a heavy heart ... “ or some similar trite shit.

ToastCosILoveIt · 04/01/2021 12:09

@herecomesthsun

A coalition of Marcus Rashford and Captain Tom would be good.

Or Gordon Brown if he would like to be part of a coalition (very intelligent and principled man)

Yes to this!

I don't think even the Torys can have a new leadership contest in 5 hours and Im not sure anyone has invented rapid personality transplants just yet.

Until then we are stuck with Boris Johnson... and slow dithering nonsense cos the man is so far out of his depth he's like a toddler stuck in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/01/2021 12:10
@Char2015 ... you mean Nicola is quite good at making a decision and leadership? Surely that will never catch on! I don't agree with her policy stances but by god she's shown leadership during this time.
I feel the same about her.

She doesn't dither about like she's wet her knicker the way that idiot Johnson does, and she's not frightened to be unpopular if necessary.

At least the Scots know where they are with her announcements.
