A good reminder of how relatively few vaccines could really make a huge difference. Just 20 vaccines given to care home residents will be enough to prevent a death.

That’s very interesting, thanks for sharing

TheChineseChicken · 02/01/2021 17:49

So does that suggest that for eg once all care home residents and carers are vaccinated there should be a 36% reduction in deaths?

mrshonda · 02/01/2021 17:49

First Oxford vaccines are being delivered ready for use on Monday even as we speak! www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/hospitals-start-receiving-doses-of-oxford-astrazeneca-vaccine/ar-BB1cpSRl?ocid=msedgntp

TheChineseChicken · 02/01/2021 17:51

And adding everyone else aged over 80 years takes that to 66% reduction (assuming the vaccine prevents death in all recipients for simplicity)

InterfectoremVulpes · 02/01/2021 17:58

I need to park up here for a while. It seems like every small nugget of good news has to be immediately stomped on by some people on here. Quite frankly, I'm fed up of all the people whining and complaining about the vaccine roll out, spreading misinformation and batching about how its all going to go wrong. Add to that the scaremongering about kids in hospital and MN is very toxic atm.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2021 18:10

Yeah, it's a lot at the moment. As suggested in the last thread I've hidden the coronavirus board and just have this thread and others I've commented on (although, I've hidden some of them now too).

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/01/2021 18:13

I just posted something positive on another thread. It felt like guerilla gardening or something.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2021 18:14
Grin

Have you been told you are hopelessly naïve, complete with a head tilt, yet?

Wherediditgo · 02/01/2021 18:24

Interesting stats about the number of vaccinations needed to lower death rate. Am I reading that right that only 4 million vaccinations could reduce deaths by 66%?
A million have already been administered. With the Oxford vaccine, I can’t believe it’ll be long before they get to the 4 million mark!

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 02/01/2021 18:25

Joining this thread, need the positivity!

Wherediditgo · 02/01/2021 18:26

That is, if the first dose only results in no hospital admissions (which apparently, it should)

They manage 14 million in the flu season before this one. And presumably this will rolled out at a much higher speed!

Does anyone have any stats about the number of vaccines we have available or due to be available in the near future??

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2021 18:30

A million have already been administered. With the Oxford vaccine, I can’t believe it’ll be long before they get to the 4 million mark!

No, unfortunately not. Those figures refer to the 4m most vulnerable and at the moment the vaccine figure is a mix of the elderly and health care workers. That's not to say I think they should vaccinate differently - it's just a little different in practice.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2021 18:32

I think they update the vaccination figures tomorrow though so, you never know.

GoldenOmber · 02/01/2021 18:34

Quite frankly, I'm fed up of all the people whining and complaining about the vaccine roll out, spreading misinformation and batching about how its all going to go wrong.

I saw someone claim that the UK was a ‘worldwide laughing stock’ over the vaccine rollout. Which seems a bit odd given that we’re currently coming third globally in vaccines administered per head! There’s plenty of other things to criticise the government about so I’m not sure why anyone would complain about something we’re actually doing relatively well at, but, sigh, okay.

Really hoping for Phase 3 results for J&J and Novavax in the next couple of months. Think UK has ordered 60m of each?

Littlebelina · 02/01/2021 18:35

I was just going to post that @MarcelineMissouri. Really interesting.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2021 18:43

We just seem to have a real complex about being the subject of worldwide hilarity. France vaccinated less that 400 people by Wednesday. Somehow, despite the surprise, concern and frustration that is apparent in the media coverage, there's not one reference to being a 'laughing stock'.

EngineeringFix · 02/01/2021 18:49

Exactly, who is laughing?

Most countries are in a pickle of some sort. I'm sure we all wish one another well.

sashagabadon · 02/01/2021 18:50

Mumsnet is particularly bad atm! Glad to see this thread pop up in active Smile
There are some very suspicious posters about spreading disinformation about children and the vaccine. I try and challenge but it is fighting a losing battle and you get accused of bullying so I give up!
Anyway just read Ireland are considering the longer gap between the two jabs and I suspect other countries will follow suit on that decision as well in time. I don’t think we’ll be the outlier where that is concerned. And I think it’s actually a very good idea.
Also my doctor neighbour had jab today and my elderly neighbour two doors away and they are fine with waiting if they have to ( not shaking and crying like people on Mumsnet Hmm)

sashagabadon · 02/01/2021 18:52

And I’ve registered as a potential steward via the good Sam app and been approved Smile

TheChineseChicken · 02/01/2021 19:28

The schools threads are bloody awful and being posted outside the CV topic! I can feel my heart rate increase everytime I click on one when I know I shouldn’t

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/01/2021 19:40

I’m on the verge of a bad anxiety attack from reading those school threads. I keep getting drawn in.

I want to hibernate til spring when the world will be in a better place.

I think the criticism directed at the vaccine program and the response to covid is very politically motivated. Trying to bring down the government by undermining everything.

I think we are doing so well with the vaccine compared to other countries. No one is laughing at us. In fact they are buying our vaccine.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2021 19:42

I agree with you all on all points!

TheChineseChicken · 02/01/2021 19:44

Yep, all of this
GoldenOmber · 02/01/2021 19:48

Indeed. I am not a fan of this government at all but I don’t see how politicising every single thing about the pandemic response helps anything.

Reminding myself that however dire the current situation looks, it’s not last spring any more. Cavalry’s already in sight coming over the hill in the form of millions of vaccine doses, and more and more people are being vaccinated every day.
