I’m going to try and concentrate on this thread rather than the doom and gloom ones.

I watch the figures very closely- as of yesterday there is definitely a small but noticeable downward trend in numbers of cases if you look at the 7 day rolling average, in most regions. In the North West and Midlands it is a flattening more than a downward trend. By the end of the week it should be clear if we have gone over the peak, it looks like we might have done but hard to be sure at this stage.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/01/2021 08:56

The Daily Mail cracked me up today- apparently elderly people in some areas are having to choose between ‘a gruelling journey’ and ‘an agonising wait’ for their jab - how to put a negative spin on the fact that there are now several options in some areas!

In other news, my Morrison’s daffodils are opening Smile

MarshaBradyo · 11/01/2021 09:04

@tootyfruitypickle

Chris Whitty has just said on BBC that life will return to normal as it was before - no question about that.
Brilliant

It was good to hear him this morning. Always realistic but brings calm hope

Spiratedaway · 11/01/2021 09:11

@MarshaBradyo I was just about to post this ha

Prof Whitty says he is confident we can go back to life as it was before at some point - "that's the life we all want to lead," he says
He says in "months, not years", it will be possible to lift restrictions in stages but says "we are quite a long way from that now".
Prof Whitty says that if "we can get on top of this early now, get the vaccine rolled out", then life will be able to go back to normal more quickly.

That's brilliant. And let's not forget tragic. The management at the DM must have spent the last year rubbing their hands in glee on a daily basis. They have enough 'sad faces' material to last them a lifetime.

Peggyslantern · 11/01/2021 09:30

@Shehz21

I was feeling depressive to a very dangerous low point the last couple of days and this thread actually saved my sanity. Please keep the good news coming Smile
Keep checking in with us won't you? I have my days like that but things are going to get better. And soon. We are just in the eye of the storm right now. I would bet my life savings on the fact that as numbers seriously dwindle and most are vaccinated that life will feel very normal very quickly, just because that's how humans work. People will be talking about the pandemic, going 'well that was shit wasn't it?' but it will feel like a very distant memory. I know it's not that simple for those who lost loved ones but overall, we have so much good ahead of us that the virus can't touch.
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/01/2021 09:30

‘"that's the life we all want to lead," he says‘

Well, most of us!

thatgingergirl · 11/01/2021 09:37

DH is to have an investigative procedure at our local hospital today. I was expecting it to be cancelled, but it is still going ahead. We're really grateful.

Yes, I wonder what the doomers on here will actually do with their time when this is over?!
tootyfruitypickle · 11/01/2021 09:47

@thatgingergirl I’ve got a routine scan going ahead at a London hospital which I was expecting to be delayed and was super stressed about it - but got the letter yesterday , it’s in a couple of weeks thankfully.

thatgingergirl · 11/01/2021 09:58

Hope all goes well tooty.

I've been hugely impressed by the efforts the NHS has made to keep other services running. A family member had a telephone GP appointment on New Years Day, was able to collect a prescription and get it filled the same day too.

I do know it's not the case for everyone though, and I am sorry that is the situation.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/01/2021 10:02

Are we back to daily briefings yet? I'm just wondering when they'll update the vaccine figures or if they'll be held back to be freshly announced on a podium?

NothingIsWrong · 11/01/2021 10:20

I would happily kiss him if that is what he said
HalfDutchGirl · 11/01/2021 10:44

Great to read the news about what Chris Witty was saying, because he's always been so realistic about everything he, alone, gives me faith that soon things will be looking a lot brighter.

It bemuses me whenever see the CV threads that there are so many gloomy, miserable people about, who feed on bad news, what is wrong with them?! So happy this thread is here!

sproutsandparsnips · 11/01/2021 11:00

I'm hopeful we are seeing a little bit of a downturn in Wales too. Our hospital is definitely in a (slightly) better position generally with regard to Covid patients, although ITU is worse.

I read that and came on here to post it - knowing one of you lovely people will have already done it.

Back to normal in months, not years. That is the single best sentence I’ve read for some time.

starfish88 · 11/01/2021 11:05

And makes a welcome change from the suggestion we will still be in lockdown in 3021!

r0ck · 11/01/2021 11:30

I've been a lurker on this thread for quite a while now and just wanted to pop out to thank you all for such encouraging and optimistic posts (with a healthy dose of realism, too!) You've saved my sanity on more than one occasion when I've wondered how we can go on, so a very sincere and heartfelt thank you from me.

Sasstastic · 11/01/2021 11:33

A small trial of 200 people has shown our vaccines are showing effectiveness against the South African variant. - On This Morning just now 🤞🏻😃
This thread is brilliant 👍🏻

thatgingergirl · 11/01/2021 11:57

Sasstastic - that is great news!

I don't know how to find previous data on the government dashboard, but I am sure, from memory, looking at current figures that the 7 day case rate in the 3 LA areas I check have decreased slightly.

Maybe that doesn't mean very much at all, but I'm taking it!

InterfectoremVulpes · 11/01/2021 12:04

@starfish88

Their cats, friends hairdresser does tend to have more up to date info than Chris Whitty though
And of course we all know that he just says what he is told to say, its not as if he is a highly qualified professional who has done this job for a long time and therefore capable of coming to these conclusions on his own Wink
FuzzyPuffling · 11/01/2021 12:08

Oh whizzo to all the good news. Thank goodness for this thread, for positive people, for fabulous scientists and for Prof Chris! ( Also virologist Chris Smith who is my secret crush!😁)
