Sons girlfriend going to Dubai

Baileysforchristmas · 29/11/2020 21:19

My sons girlfriend is living with us at the moment. She announced she’s going to Dubai with friends (not with my son) she has to have 2 tests going to Dubai, none to come back to Uk and you don’t have to isolate. I want her to have a test before she comes back to our house and another test 5 days later, as I want my parents to be able to come round for Christmas. She thinks I am being unreasonable as she will have to pay £170 for each test. Am I being unreasonable?

You aren't being unreasonable asking her to take a test. If she can afford to go to Dubai, she can afford to take a test and pay enough rent to cover what she is costing you for that matter.
This made me chuckle A lot of influencers are struggling at the moment as brand deals & sponsorships are getting harder to come by so it’s no coincidence that there’s a bigger influx into Dubai by them at the moment. anyone else thinking "didums"? ;-)

HeddaGarbled · 30/11/2020 09:50

It sounds sketchy to me. She can’t afford to pay rent or keep but “a friend” is paying for her to go to Dubai. Perhaps she could stay with the rich and generous friend when she gets back. I think I’d be asking a lot more questions about her financial arrangements before I let her back in my house rent free, let alone the COVID issue.

PurpleDaisies · 30/11/2020 09:52

This covid test thing seems to be a minor thing on the background of her having moved in paying no rent or contribution to your household.

showmeshowme12 · 30/11/2020 10:00

My then boyfriend and I were paying my parents £250 each so £500 a month when we were living at home to save for a house.

She should do the same.

Make her pay for a test or refuse her to come back

Tell your son and her from the new year rent from both needs paying

Baileysforchristmas · 30/11/2020 10:01

@HeddaGarbled exactly, it’s not just Covid but it makes it 10 times worse. I don’t think she realises what difficult predicament she’s put me in. She’s young and wants to go and have nice time but this is my home, my family want to come and visit at Christmas, I daren’t even tell them she’s going to Dubai as it would make them so anxious. You do a nice thing for people and they just take the muck, never again will I let someone in my home.

Mick I meant not muck

She's 21 and living off you for free? YABU to allow that to happen.

As for the poor unfortunate so called 'influencers' who can't get brand deals. Poor them. There's people losing their real jobs that they've studied and trained for and you're giving pity to self obsessed people because they're not getting paid to post a selfie? Boo fucking good.

Mrgrinch · 30/11/2020 10:09

Boo fucking hoo.
@Waxonwaxoff0 Croatia was on the travel corridor list at the time my cousin and his friends went. All 9 of them brought Covid back, along with another 15 infected people on the plane, which then in turn infected all their families etc. They are the reason Glasgow got tougher restrictions back in August/September time! A travel corridor doesn't mean no risk
Yes indeed. Our whole household had to self isolate for 14 days because one of these 15 infected young people was a sibling of a child in my child’s class.

All 30 kids, plus their household. Let’s guess at 120 people. Plus all the other contacts from other family members. Let’s guess at another 30 (very conservative ).

That’s 150 people who had to SI for two weeks from one person.

And there were 15 of them on the plane . So that’s 3000 people who lost wages/missed school / got depressed / were seriously inconvenienced because some young people wanted a weeks holiday in Croatia.

Completely unreasonable . The people who get the fun of the holiday need to SI and pay for test, not everyone else.

S00LA · 30/11/2020 10:14

Sorry I got my figures wrong, it was 24 infected people not 15. So that’s what, 4,500 people who had to pay the price for those kids’ holiday.

TheQueef · 30/11/2020 10:16

I read about Dubai porta pottys.... who is paying for her, her 'friend'?
Dodgy at most times but in a pandemic?

PrimeraVez · 30/11/2020 10:19

Judging by some of the scenes here in recent weeks, thanks to the influx of 'influencers', I would definitely be expecting her to take a test before she returns to your house.

I would also consider that she may be coming to Dubai (knowingly or not) for some kind of sex work.

notimagain · 30/11/2020 10:26

@RichardMarksisinnocent

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what's an influencer,

I posted a link to the wiki piece answering this upthread...

anyway...they are individuals who often start out as internet Bloggers who by virtue of what they write about/their style etc gain a large following..Some large companies spot this and may then sponsor them, may ask them to indulge in a bit of product placement in their videos, images etc....

I know one or two who individuals who became influencers as a spin off from blogging about their vaguely interesting day job (their employer knew and approved) and made a bit of cash doing it but certianly didn't get rich on it, unlike some..

supportivemyarse · 30/11/2020 10:29

your house your rules.

do people really behave like this? she sounds trash and selfish. I wouldn't even debate it, she pays for a test or doesn't come back under your roof. And if she does return, room and board is £ per month. I'd be having a frank conversation with my DS too. If she's arguing the toss she can go share a room with her DM.

Baileysforchristmas · 30/11/2020 10:41

@PrimeraVez what scenes? Can you elaborate?

OP posts:
canigooutyet · 30/11/2020 10:48

Sit them both down and tell them madam not only has to have the tests you have asked for, she also has to start paying her way. If she's not happy she can go and rent elsewhere.

PrimeraVez · 30/11/2020 10:50

UAE citizens and residents, on the whole, are taking the rules and regulations very seriously. Social distancing, mask wearing etc etc. In general, I feel very safe here.

However, some of the tourists seem to think that just because they are on holiday, COVID is as well. Angry Instagram is currently full of young Brits 'living their best lives' in Dubai's beach clubs and restaurants, acting like they have never heard the word 'pandemic.'

LiG123 · 30/11/2020 10:50

@PurpleDaisies does she hold her breath from their house until she lands in Dubai?

Very naive not to think of the travelling involved

canigooutyet · 30/11/2020 10:51

I also don't buy the mate route, could be to smuggle drugs or prostitution.

PurpleDaisies · 30/11/2020 10:52

Very naive not to think of the travelling involved

Does she hold her breath every time she leaves the house here?

LiG123 · 30/11/2020 10:52

@IamTomHanks I have friend teachers out there so make it sound a lot more 'normal' than here as they're returning for Xmas and concerned at the difference

Branleuse · 30/11/2020 10:53

shes taking the piss swanning off to dubai for a holiday while living with you for free. Youre not her mum and maybe her and your son need to move out if they expect you to not have opinions or rules while they are freeloading off you as adults

Stellaris22 · 30/11/2020 10:54

Not unreasonable.

If she can't afford the test then she shouldn't be going on holiday. Tell her to get her priorities sorted, if she has a key I'd be tempted to change the locks if she still goes away.

And she can afford a holiday but not contribute towards bills? At 21? Freeloader and ridiculous.

LiG123 · 30/11/2020 10:56

@PurpleDaisies hence lock down 🤔

Tinkity · 30/11/2020 10:56

Are you talking to me?

Can you please quote me or anyone else on this thread who has offered pity or sympathy to influencers?

Did you bother to read the link in my post about what some influencers are actually doing in Dubai? My post was in direct response to a poster who mentioned many influencers being on “holiday” in Dubai, I was pointing out that might not be all they’re doing & mentioned a lack of brand deals / sponsorships at the moment as a reason for it i.e. some of them are looking at alternative ways to make money.
