Mockdown

Seriously, food market in Chelsea today. Holland and Barrett and Rymans open on the High St. The parks are rammed, households playing football and chatting.

And my child has to stay at home for 2 weeks, missing school, interaction and fresh air for one potential close contact. I am happy to do this, but it's galling in the middle of the rest of the Mockdown.

Op was your child at home?

ForBlueSkies · 07/11/2020 22:44

I don’t bother trying to go for local walks anymore. I live in coastal Kent and it used to be I could go on a lunchtime walk to the beach and back (on a weekday) and see 4-5 people all up. Now it’s always heaving, like the worst weekend day in summer holidays.

I’m an introvert who likes peace and quiet so I’ve given up. Glad I bought a treadmill. 😂

HumanFemale1 · 08/11/2020 02:45

Op you're right, today in London coffee shops open for take away, shops who sell toys and other crap open because they sell some food, food market as well. This is more like a half lockdown, during the first one the streets were deserted at the start...

CrumbsThatsQuick · 08/11/2020 07:37

@Northernsoulgirl45

Op was your child at home?
Yes my child's a teenager and they were at home. They are not allowed to leave the house for 2 weeks.

My local Botox clinic has announced they're open. They are allowed because they're healthcare providers.

Great news 👍.

KatherineJaneway · 08/11/2020 07:46

Not sure about elsewhere but the weather in London was great yesterday. I went out for a walk. It was busy but that's what you'd expect surely? You're allowed to go out for exercise and it was a lovely cold, crisp, Autumn day.

Bushola · 08/11/2020 08:19

@CrumbsThatsQuick

Yes! So why are we pretending to be locked down.
Falsified figures and knee jerk reactions to mass hysteria.
southeastdweller · 08/11/2020 08:23

People and some businesses are allowed to do all that so why are you bothered?

Frouby · 08/11/2020 08:28

I went for a run Friday morning, just round the local trails and lake. Usually go week days at that time and maybe see the odd dog walker. Was falling over folk from start to finish, poor dog spent more time on her lead than off it due to badly behaved other dogs, folks clutching costa coffe, folks munching breakfast, couples and older groups. Quite a few what looked like mother/daughter pairs.

All perfectly legal, all absolutely allowed. But I was irrationally annoyed as I am used to having that space to myself at that time of day.

I do wonder tho when people normally take their exercise when not in lockdown? Majority don't look like typical gym people (like me).

gungholierthanthou · 08/11/2020 08:33

Shopping in the open air isn't going to spread covid. I'm assuming Ryman and Holland and Barrett have safety measures in place, and people are likely to be in and out in less than 15 minutes (the length of time they reckon you have to be in close contact with someone to catch it). Additionally, if you look at the figures the proportion of people picking up covid in shops is TINY. I have no idea why they've closed any shops at all if it's all meant to be "based on the science".

MacbookHo · 08/11/2020 08:33

It varies, though. DH and I went for a walk last night up to our small market turn and it was like I Am Legend.

ThatDamnScientist · 08/11/2020 08:35

Inget Holland and Barratt and food market being able to stay open but how is Rymans allowed to remain open?!

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 08/11/2020 08:35

Most people don't want to just exists behind a window in their house .
Corona virus wont kill most people, unless they are very unlucky , in the same way as most people wont die in a plane crash , but sadly some people do.

motherrunner · 08/11/2020 08:37

@ThatDamnScientist

Inget Holland and Barratt and food market being able to stay open but how is Rymans allowed to remain open?!
I’m a teacher and my children are still attending school. We would need somewhere like Ryman’s opened for school materials.
PurpleDaisies · 08/11/2020 08:38

The evidence for outdoor transmission is minuscule. Wearing masks outside isn’t required so I don’t know why people are getting arsey about that. Looking at those pictures, there are lots of people but they’re mainly in twos. And closing even non essential retail would have had a minimal effect on the R so it’s difficult to get worked up about people legally going to those shops the governing has said can stay open.

Lots of froth over nothing. People visiting family indoors is the big risk but nobody is complaining about that.

Nc135 · 08/11/2020 08:39

Am happy businesses are staying afloat and people are out keeping them that way.

waitforitwaitforit · 08/11/2020 08:44

If people can't do the things they would usually do (shop, go to the cinema, work) they're going to do something else. Would you like people who don't normally go for a walk to just sit it and watch the walls?

The problem with most things being closed is that there are fewer places to go, so the places that are open will get busier faster. Up here, when the pubs were closed just before the school holidays everyone just changed their plans to meet in cafes.

Furrybutts · 08/11/2020 08:44

I honestly haven't seen a scrap of lockdown here (Cheshire)
The shop car parks are full, the highstreets are busy, and for the last 2 nights my street and the next one have been out having firework parties!
Last night there was music and they were singing and dancing too. Shock

I have a feeling this is an insight into what Christmas and New Year will be like.

PhilCornwall1 · 08/11/2020 08:45

@Sparklingbrook

Why are people stopping to take pictures in a very crowded place?
Probably so they can have a whinge on social media. The trouble is, they make themselves look stupid as they were there taking the photos.

Still, it gives them something pointless to post.

London today. Mockdown forcing more people contact... I give up!

It's outdoors. It'll be fine. We didn't see any spike following the beach scenes in the summer. Covid spreads in poorly-ventilated places.
Fcuk38 · 08/11/2020 08:51

Well it’s not people’s fault. If the government allows all this to be open then people will go out and do it. There’s plenty of the country that is in tier 1 so people feel it’s unfair that they should be on a full
Lockdown. But by any means it’s not a full lockdown kids are at school and there’s no
Restrictions on the recreation.

Dowser · 08/11/2020 09:04

Went to the range and home bargains at 4 pm yesterday on a very cold, foggy sunless afternoon thinking it would be quiet.
It was mental in there.
Why? Too cold to be outside for long, although I dare say there were brave souls along the beach.
We tried it the day before but after 30 minutes I was perished.
So, with most of the indoor shopping centre closed , the cinema, pubs, bingo, swimming pool, sports clubs, soft play and gyms
What are people meant to do because I reckon they’ve had enough of lockdown.

There’s 94, 000 people in our town.we’ve had 111 covid deaths since March
A look through the obituaries will show that the majority of all deaths tend to be well over 70 and 80.
I’d have Been over the moon if my dad had died of covid aged 82 ( the average age of a covid death)instead of a sudden heart attack at 70.
Ditto fo mum , instead of the slow agonising death from dementia at 88

Lockdowns don’t work..otherwise if they did, we would’nt be doing this again and it doesn’t matter how pretty your cage is and how many gadgets and gizmos you have...if you don’t have freedom
It’s still a cage.

MaxNormal · 08/11/2020 09:04

The government really had one shot at compliance levels and that was the first lockdown. There's only so long you can expect humans not to behave like humans.

Dowser · 08/11/2020 09:06

@Furrybutts
It sounds like there was a Big Banger for Boris 😂
Loads still going off around here too.

MacbookHo · 08/11/2020 09:13

What are people meant to do

Stay home. It’s been made pretty clear.
