Mockdown

Seriously, food market in Chelsea today. Holland and Barrett and Rymans open on the High St. The parks are rammed, households playing football and chatting.

And my child has to stay at home for 2 weeks, missing school, interaction and fresh air for one potential close contact. I am happy to do this, but it's galling in the middle of the rest of the Mockdown.

Do people still think the virus is spreading outdoors? It doesn’t so why does it matter if people are out and about enjoying themselves and getting fresh air.

No I will not ‘stay at home’. Because I don’t have to. Kids need exercise, dog needs exercise.

It’s great to see all the local cafes and restaurants offering takeaways this time rather than just shutting.

Our local cafe in the park was doing takeaway beer and wine which went down very well yesterday in the lovely sunshine.

Most transmission happens indoors with close contact for more than 15 minutes. As long as we are not mixing households indoors then I think getting out as much as possible is fine.
Shame all the shops are shut. I really don’t think many cases at all were transmitted this way.

I agree too, I think people ARE acting within the rules and it is so so important for all our general well being and the local and national economy that as many businesses can stay open as possible and that we get out and about, if we need and can.

I am certainly not Covid Police, although I am trying to do what I am told.

I just despair at how it plays out, the irrational, random and inequitable nature of it all...

For the local business going under because they can't wangle essential status.

For the teenagers not allowed out of their front door for two weeks, whilst people are browsing for cinnamon pot pourri at the market.

For the grandparents who can't both see their grandkids outdoors whilst people are sitting together outside coffee shops with their takeouts.

For outdoor grassroots sports being cancelled whilst you can stand in line for a venison burger for 40 minutes.

For these measure trying to reduce our interactions and seeming increasing them instead, by funnelling everyone into the same spots at the same time.

Well that walk down by the river was fabulous and people were so friendly
So much nicer than last time where they were practically leaping out of the way

@PhilCornwall1
Us neither
Out every day
Beach, country parks, staithes was beautiful, Whitby, the Lake District
We took advantage of the peace and quiet

It's hardly surprising that parks etc get crowded when they are one of the few non-shopping places people can go and the hours of daylight are reducing. If the government didn't realise that restricting people to fewer places during the shorter winter days was going to lead to crowding they deserve the sack.

Look op you have been very gracious about accepting you might be feeling this way because your son is stuck inside, perhaps had he been out with everyone else you would be fine.

I don't see the restrictions as irrational. Most sports, bar a very few, require contact, they just do. Your son's rugby game, football - my dd's netball. It is about reducing contact.
Waiting in a line at a burger bar socially distanced is not going to create the same contact, it just isn't.

Far from being irrational and random, I think the restrictions were carefully thought through by scientists that understand not just the contagion better than us, but the behaviours they create. We are all outside for one, even on the most dreary, foggy freezing day - so it is working! If not we would all be crowded in busy restaurants, in busy bars and having extended family lunches, because it is cold. It is keeping us outside of our homes where the spread is at its worst.
Of course many will be flouting rules but the vast majority of us are respecting them. We understand why they are there.

There might be a bonus at the end of some kind of christmas (not guaranteed) it is miserable outside anyway so lets watch netflix and look forward to better times.

Yes it is shit. But your boy is safe and healthy, and so are you. I have just come out of hospital, and boy is it grim. So I would say celebrate the comfort of home and soon it will be over Wine Flowers

Totally agree with this.

I sincerely hope so!

Thanks all, it's been so helpful to me to vent and to chat and to hear different points of view.

I will be having a breakdown next week so don't worry! We all will at some point, because none of this is easy.
