Mockdown

Seriously, food market in Chelsea today. Holland and Barrett and Rymans open on the High St. The parks are rammed, households playing football and chatting.

And my child has to stay at home for 2 weeks, missing school, interaction and fresh air for one potential close contact. I am happy to do this, but it's galling in the middle of the rest of the Mockdown.

@MacbookHo

What are people meant to do

Stay home. It’s been made pretty clear.

Except there is no restriction on going out.
Heatherjayne1972 · 08/11/2020 09:16

There’s more places open than closed here

Fizbosshoes · 08/11/2020 09:25

London on Thursday and Friday (city area) warlike a ghost town.
Yesterday was a glorious autumn day and I think, with more places closed and no indoor socialising allowed people are going to be concentrated in to smaller areas. I went for a walk on lanes and footpaths, and deliberately avoided the park as i thought it would be busy...but in London I reckon more people will head to the river or parks as theres less open space.

Fizbosshoes · 08/11/2020 09:30

Probably so they can have a whinge on social media. The trouble is, they make themselves look stupid as they were there taking the photos.

This is what I dont understand. In march we had superior posters on our local fb page complaining (with pics) when it was crowded...assuming only they were there for valid reasons...and then other pics of empty parks and streets patronisingly congratulating people for staying away (again the photographers reason for being out was obviously valid)

MacbookHo · 08/11/2020 09:42

Except there is no restriction on going out.

Are people seriously that thick, though, that they need to be told that wandering round the shops isn’t what you should do in a pandemic? The message since March has been “Stay home, protect the NHS, save lives”. We’re allowed out for exercise, health appointments, school, and work. Other than that, we should stay in.

I despair if anyone thinks that just because they’re not going to be shot or fined for mooching round The Range, it’s the right thing to do.

London today. Mockdown forcing more people contact... I give up!

KP24 also likes to wind people up then step back and watch the ensuing chaos
Hayeahnobut · 08/11/2020 09:44

This is a lockdown in name only. When it doesn't work, the government will use it to pass the blame back to the public, as always.

There is some enforcement happening, six people were fined in my area for gathering round a park bench (that is the police's description of the incident). So crowded shopping areas are fine, a few people in a park, criminal.

So you're suggesting because I don't have school aged children and my workplace is closed I should stay locked in my house just so your children can go to school.

No thanks

ssd · 08/11/2020 09:48

It seems such a shame smaller independent retailers are closed in the run up to Xmas but larger stores like M&S are open. Lots of people have been trying to support local shops, but now might pop into the chain stores still open to buy Xmas presents. And when the smaller stores get to reopen it might be too late to shift their stock.

If I had a small business I'd be fuming.

PhilCornwall1 · 08/11/2020 09:50

The message since March has been “Stay home, protect the NHS, save lives”.

Except when it was "Eat out to help out", "Go back to the office".

No amount of whinging and moaning is going to make people do what you want, end of.

It's all a complete fuck up.

ssd · 08/11/2020 09:51

People can't be blamed for wanting to go a walk or just get out the house just now. It seems very selfish all these lucky posters who live in Nice areas complaining others are enjoying them too.
You only live there, it's not yours!

MacbookHo · 08/11/2020 09:51

So you're suggesting because I don't have school aged children and my workplace is closed I should stay locked in my house just so your children can go to school.

Er, it’s actually the government who’s suggested it... 🤔

Absolutely. Especially when the evidence from sage shows closing non essential retail has little effect on virus transmission.
MacbookHo · 08/11/2020 09:52

Except when it was "Eat out to help out", "Go back to the office".

Yes, but it’s definitely gone back to the “stay home” but now. Did you catch Boris’s speech? It was very clear.

NullcovoidNovember · 08/11/2020 09:52

I went to a wood yesterday, never in 15 years and more have I ever seen it so busy!
Of course we were there too but I was astonished!

No attempt to sd, tons of larger groups chatting no sd... It was outside but no breeze, quite muggy.

It's very much business as usual.
Myself and the dc are linked to 100s through work and school.

NullcovoidNovember · 08/11/2020 09:53

Re independents I agree esp as it was easier for them to enforce sd!!

islockdownoveryet · 08/11/2020 09:54

We are supposed to stay home unless it's essential.
People going to shops -essential they need food / toiletries etc
People at the park - essential exercise
So I'm not sure what your point is lockdown is just a word but if you want it to mean you never leave the house then fine but at no point has the government said don't ever leave the house .
I never understood why people got upset last time and I certainly don't understand it this time .
I know some would love it if we weren't allowed out and the army were waiting at the end of the street asking us where we are going ( this has been posted on here previously) but that's not going to happen in this country .

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/11/2020 09:55

The weather was good though yesterday for November, we went to National Trust gardens which was fully booked. Today is a lot duller, I’m sure the weather had much to do with it

MacbookHo · 08/11/2020 09:57

I honestly don’t get it. It’s only for a month. It’s wet, cold, windy. What’s so unbearable about having to stay home, read a book, watch TV? It’s not forever. And it’s not like we’ve been ordered to do this for no reason - there’s a pandemic. Go out for exercise and buy food, then come home. What’s the issue with that?

PhilCornwall1 · 08/11/2020 09:58

@MacbookHo

No, I did not "catch" Johnson's speech. I have no wish to listen to that idiot and The Two Ronnies thank you.
MillieEpple · 08/11/2020 10:00

@JamesAnderson
You are free not to like the government rules. I am not sure how free you are to ignore it (personally I cant see getting a fine is that likely!)
but yes that is what the government has asked us to do for 4 weeks. They even mention keeping schools running is one of the points of the restrictions.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 08/11/2020 10:03

@MacbookHo you're hilarious. It's only a month. I'm a single parent with a 6 year old that was really lonely during the first lockdown. I hope you enjoy your 4 weeks with your partner and your child that enjoys staying home and reading books.

Bwlch · 08/11/2020 10:04

Yes, but it’s definitely gone back to the “stay home” but now. Did you catch Boris’s speech? It was very clear.

It's not very clear at all. There are so many exceptions. My employer had told me that nothing has changed as far as my job is concerned so I should carry on coming in as I did before. Unlike the first lockdown, apart from no face to face gym sessions, my routine has barely altered and I'm not breaking any rules.

userxx · 08/11/2020 10:08

What’s so unbearable about having to stay home,

Because it's been going on for the best part of the year.

"Stay home". Gives me the fucking rage.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/11/2020 10:10

I thought there was a lot of emphasis on going out for exercise and recreation in the PMs speech and stuff like sitting on benches, unlike last time when the Covid could somehow go up your arse if you sat down for a minute though it could be a bit damp for that.
