Mockdown

Seriously, food market in Chelsea today. Holland and Barrett and Rymans open on the High St. The parks are rammed, households playing football and chatting.

And my child has to stay at home for 2 weeks, missing school, interaction and fresh air for one potential close contact. I am happy to do this, but it's galling in the middle of the rest of the Mockdown.

OP posts:

We have a small open air market in our town twice a week which is allowed to stay open but only sell essentials, so food, petfood, plants. And, yesterday I went there, bought food from 3 stalls and bulbs from a fourth, and then went to the veg shop and butchers elsewhere in town. I personally felt safer doing that than going to a crowded supermarket, and (hopefully) have done my bit to keep the independent retailers in my town going. Not sure what is wrong with that??

vonny63 · 08/11/2020 11:15

The pictures are of a Broadway market in Hackney. The stalls were spaced out, but its a small road. The Mayor of Hackney, closed it down within two hours of opening.

Therollockingrogue · 08/11/2020 11:17

@MaudesMum i think there is nothing wrong with that. However if the local market grew and became a craft fair/ Christmas gift market scenario I’d think that was a bit unfair to the local shops that have been forced to close. I’d also think it ridiculous that one person at a time can’t go inside a local shop that has taken every measure to be covid secure , yet 20 maskless people can mingle under a market stall perusing bath bombs in rainy weather.

userxx · 08/11/2020 11:23

@Bwlch Glad I'm not the only one.

napody · 08/11/2020 11:23

YANBU for criticising lockdown for being too strict or not strict enough.

YABU for conflating lockdown with essential self isolation of close contacts which is the only chance we are going to have for no more lockdowns.

annabel85 · 08/11/2020 11:31

@CrumbsThatsQuick

Yes! So why are we pretending to be locked down.
Of course it's not a lockdown. It just feels like it to people because the bloody pubs are shut so the world has ended for a few weeks.
annabel85 · 08/11/2020 11:35

@Chessie678

It sounds like the majority of these people are just doing normal legal things. It's just that they are all doing the same things in the same place because so much is closed. There's really no reason for retail to be closed anyway as so few cases are linked to it - we saw no spike in cases when retail reopened in June even without masks.
The hope from the scientists/government was that people would bunker down for the winter, but it's not happening. People are all out socialising, they're just missing the pub.
JamesAnderson · 08/11/2020 11:38

@MacbookHo

So you're suggesting because I don't have school aged children and my workplace is closed I should stay locked in my house just so your children can go to school.

Er, it’s actually the government who’s suggested it... 🤔

The government say I can shop for essentials and exercise. If I decide I need an essential each day of November I can go to a shop. I can also go out for a walk.

It's the previous poster who is suggesting I don't go out at all

JamesAnderson · 08/11/2020 11:47
@JamesAnderson
You are free not to like the government rules. I am not sure how free you are to ignore it (personally I cant see getting a fine is that likely!)
but yes that is what the government has asked us to do for 4 weeks. They even mention keeping schools running is one of the points of the restrictions.
Like I say, the government has said we can shop for essentials and go out for exercise. At no point have they said I have to lock myself away for 4 weeks which is what the previous poster is suggesting.

Newspapers were deemed essential during the lockdown in spring so an outing to the shop is permitted every day if I want to.

If I decide I need something essential each day I can go out to get it.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 08/11/2020 11:58

We got a message telling us that Richmond park was full. The car parks were full and they were closing part of it down. I live ten minutes away and had to avoid it during the last lock down because it was rammed and now it is happening again!

userxx · 08/11/2020 12:18

I'd so love to be in my local this afternoon.

Topseyt · 08/11/2020 13:18

What are the Covid Police and lockdown enthusiasts going to do when this pandemic eventually fades? What will they fill their days with?

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 08/11/2020 13:43

I will enjoy my walks in the park and prepping for my afternoon lessons rather than cleaning tables with anti bac spray!

Actually the government survey about retraining suggested I would be good in the police!

London today. Mockdown forcing more people contact... I give up!

Get a grip love
HeyBaby2020 · 08/11/2020 14:35

@MacbookHo

Except there is no restriction on going out.

Are people seriously that thick, though, that they need to be told that wandering round the shops isn’t what you should do in a pandemic? The message since March has been “Stay home, protect the NHS, save lives”. We’re allowed out for exercise, health appointments, school, and work. Other than that, we should stay in.

I despair if anyone thinks that just because they’re not going to be shot or fined for mooching round The Range, it’s the right thing to do.

Why though, no one cares anymore we stayed in for literally months before! Can’t do it again!!!!

And I work in a school so I’m out every day anyway why shouldn’t I on my days off

😂❤️ love this comment !
Dowser · 08/11/2020 14:45

I’m at a park 15 miles away
Damp and foggy but not too cold
Everyone having a great time
Cafe open for takeaway
Playgrounds open
Families, dogs, children letting their hair down
What’s not to like
( this was closed last lockdown)

cologne4711 · 08/11/2020 14:50

Newspapers were deemed essential during the lockdown in spring so an outing to the shop is permitted every day if I want to

And yet people got so angry on here in March/April about "the elderly" (who were probably only about 50 in many cases) walking to their local newsagent for a paper every day. Completely legal and completely acceptable.

Shock horror: park gets busy in city of 8 million people.
MacbookHo · 08/11/2020 14:53

We all stayed in for “literally months” before. It wasn’t just your solitary sacrifice. You know it was the whole country, right?

And I work in a school so I’m out every day anyway why shouldn’t I on my days off

I’m guessing so you don’t catch the virus while you’re browsing wax melts in Poundstretcher and then drag it back to the school to infect children.

RHTawneyonabus · 08/11/2020 14:53

We went to a local lesser known beauty spot that usually has about four other cars there. The place was rammed with people parking on the road and all the way up the hill. Not many people seemed to be in isolated family groups either but large groups of what looked a like a few families who had all met up. The kids ran ahead of us and before we knew it were playing happily with some kids from their school who happened to be there.

Im not sure this lockdown will work in the same way.

sashagabadon · 08/11/2020 14:54

Just back from London on the tube. V empty indeed and roads seem quiet too. Parks seem busy which is fair enough to especially as it will be dark by 5pm

AlphaJura · 08/11/2020 15:03

I go to a shop every day, even if it's just the local one. I did throughout the first lockdown. It's not to mooch about, browse or for 'something to do'. It's just because we always need something! There's nothing to say you can't if you need something. Shops are low risk anyway.

waitforitwaitforit · 08/11/2020 15:13

Errr, no we didn't all stay in the last time thanks.
