Mockdown

Seriously, food market in Chelsea today. Holland and Barrett and Rymans open on the High St. The parks are rammed, households playing football and chatting.

And my child has to stay at home for 2 weeks, missing school, interaction and fresh air for one potential close contact. I am happy to do this, but it's galling in the middle of the rest of the Mockdown.

@WhentheDealGoesDown

I thought there was a lot of emphasis on going out for exercise and recreation in the PMs speech and stuff like sitting on benches, unlike last time when the Covid could somehow go up your arse if you sat down for a minute though it could be a bit damp for that.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Remmy123 · 08/11/2020 10:13

We are told not to travel far so everyone in the area is going to the local playgrounds / woods etc hence why so busy

The first lockdown was so extreme - playgrounds closed / dont sit on benches etc so this is making it seem far more relaxed lockdown ... because closing playground etc wasnt necessary in the first place.

Those complaining that this isn't a proper lockdown - just stay in yourself / take your one walk a day - listen to the nonsense we are being fed.

MigGril · 08/11/2020 10:21

It isn't a proper lockdown like last time and I won't be surprised if we don't see numbers drop that much and need to do more measure in a few weeks time.

Those saying it's ok it's only the elderly, well what about the fact that Manchester yesterday had to close to all but non emergency NHS care. This is what would happen we would end up with people dieing not just of covid but of other illnesses that we could normally treat due to lack of medical care being available. It wouldn't be pretty, think of all the accidents we would be able to treat or heat attacks or asthmatics. It would be grime.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 08/11/2020 10:21

It's a pain. It is.

The thing is, it's happening isn't it? It isn't going away. I'm wondering if you would feel better about it if you made a conscious decision to develop a positive attitude to getting through it? I'm not trying to be toady or sarcastic.

MigGril · 08/11/2020 10:22

Sorry that should have been all but emergency care.

Therollockingrogue · 08/11/2020 10:23

I’m so confused by my local high street.
Independent retailers, many with a new inventory of Christmas stock, closed down , while still paying bills to stay afloat. And then we have some sort of weird unregulated town market. And because the local council are doing nothing to stop the market, every week it gets bigger. Handmade candles. Shit stuff in cellophane. Gifts. Books. Jewellery. Prints. Cushions.. in fact all the stuff our local retailers sell. But these traders aren’t local , they’re categorically not the aforementioned shop owners. They are people from cities further afield, taking advantage of the tourism in rural towns and villages to make a few quid.
The market is packed. Understandably as there’s nothing else to do in the town once you’ve had your takeaway coffee. But there’s little social distancing. Few mask wearers because people still feel this is unnecessary in outdoor settings.
I can’t imagine how it must feel, filing for bankruptcy as an established family business, while watching people who play no bills and rates for premises take all the local trade ?

Yes, I think you are right. Chin up. Not to let the inconsistencies frustrate me too much. Enjoy the small things. Bash a pillow now and then.

i was
so shocked to see the National Trust is open... as local house to me was sooo busy yesterday with visitors to the grounds. I don't understand why people can't abide by these rules for 4 weeks?

Therollockingrogue · 08/11/2020 10:28

@PurpleDaisies it may not be required by law, but when people are cramming together, sharing benches , queuing for the stalls, sheltering from rain under market stands, it would (imho) be sensible.

They are allowed to be open and people are allowed to go to them so they were abiding by the rules or is this your made up rules

If they are open, they are abiding by the rules, or are they not abiding by the weird made up rules only found on here?
Mumisnotmyonlyname · 08/11/2020 10:32

@CrumbsThatsQuick that's my strategy, anyway! I don't have younger kids any more, so I suppose it's easier for me to say, though! (But I do have moping late teen/ young adults).

Daisy03 · 08/11/2020 10:32

Also it doesn't compare to Tesco, Asda etc which are predominantly groceries and essentials, with a far smaller section of clothing.
What I'm referring to is a 4 storey M&S which has one floor of food whilst it all reamains open

And my child has to stay at home for 2 weeks, missing school, interaction and fresh air

You just sound a bit bitter that your child is having to stay at home, and everyone else is having a good time. The green eyed monster rearing up. Your child is staying at home for a good reason, everyone else is healthy and pleased to be out. Whether it is right your child is in isolation or not, it is what it is. No doubt we will all have some experience of that in one form or another. I have a friend with four children and she has so far spent eight weeks in isolation with one or the other!

We SHOULD be out in the sunshine, as many businesses as possible SHOULD be open so we can keep the economy going. Walking, cycling, shopping, playing all in the fresh air - wonderful! That is how you keep people's mental health in a good state, the ones you can't see, locked up in their homes to afraid to go out.

Everything is open here more or less, and I am so happy about it. Those businesses will survive, they will be the last ones standing and are offering a wonderful community service to the elderly as well as selling things. Shops are more than just getting stuff, they are lifelines for some don't forget.

Ihaveyourback · 08/11/2020 10:38

We should all be very worried about those not able to leave the house, they are the ones that have the real problem - living life in penance and self imposed isolation unless they are very vulnerable.

I could not be happier to see the green spaces around me full to the brim with happy families, the elderly walking their dogs chatting to everyone (from a distance) people running, cycling - eating food and having fun.

Bwlch · 08/11/2020 10:40

"Stay home". Gives me the fucking rage.

I know what you mean. It's that missing "at".

PhilCornwall1 · 08/11/2020 10:40

Mine is meant to be government imposed, I'll just say I didn't get the email.

I think you are right. I do feel very sorry for him (his face at breakfast, poor boy!!!) and I am frustrated about the inconsistency and seeming random nature of things allowed and not allowed. But there has to be lines somewhere, I understand that. He can't leave the house for 14 days. We have a concrete square or a garden, luckily!

I found it depressing (even though it made my journey quicker) driving through our normally busy market town yesterday where a few market stalls were open (admittedly they were selling food) but the rest of the town was deserted. I was meeting a friend for a walk and then going to the supermarket in case anyone needs to know why I was out.
I dont blame the world and his wife all going out for a walk or cycle on a lovely autumnal day.its going to be a long and bleak winter and I imagine there will be many days where only the odd dog walker or runner will be out, and the rest will be in their homes.

GrapefruitsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 08/11/2020 10:48

@CrumbsThatsQuick

Not sure.

I am just wondering if lockdown is somehow increasing interaction rather than reducing it. Seemed that way in the (usually much quieter) park today.

I think there just is nothing else to do now but wander around the local park or few remaining open shops.

So where as before people had many places they could go now there are only a few so they are all crowded together.

MacbookHo · 08/11/2020 10:48

@MacbookHo you're hilarious. It's only a month. I'm a single parent with a 6 year old that was really lonely during the first lockdown. I hope you enjoy your 4 weeks with your partner and your child that enjoys staying home and reading books.

The schools are open this time round, so it should be easier for your child this time? And you, doing the school run. Mine are at secondary so I don’t get that school run anymore. And I WFH anyway. So theoretically I could be within my rights U.K. spend the month whining and moaning about not going out. Maybe I’ll try that! Many posters on here seem to be getting a kick out of it.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 08/11/2020 10:58

It's a bit miserable today, DH has gone fishing which is still allowed so that is good.

IcedPurple · 08/11/2020 11:07

Oh great. Another 4 weeks of 'So I rushed out in full hazmat on my once weekly super ultra essential journey and was shocked - shocked! - to see other people doing things permitted under current guidelines!"

Yawn.

I don't believe the govt ever used the word 'lockdown' to descibe the current restrictions. It's kind of a meaningless word at any rate. As someone said few days ago, this time last year most of us had only heard the word 'lockdown' if we watched prison dramas, yet now everyone has an opinion on what a 'proper lockdown' is, and if it doesn't involve locking yourself at home looking out the window for any 'illigal' activity they can feel outraged about and preferably report to the police, then what really is the point?

You may lock yourself up as long as you like. The rest of us don't have to.
