Are people stockpiling in your area?

Went to pick up a few things from Sainsbury's earlier and they had no bread, no toilet roll and the rice and pasta isle was pretty much empty.

Why are people doing this?!

It's creates a massive knock on effect as then others who weren't originally panic buying then start to think they need too.

I have an 8 month old baby and now I'm thinking should I stock up on her milk & nappies etc? We always keep a couple of tubs in the house as spare anyway but I remember throughout the last lockdown I really struggled to get her some milk! But then if I do that, I'm as bad as them!

It just really stresses me out and I wish people wouldn't do it

Delivery slots all mysteriously vanishing too here. Pain in the arse as we're in quarantine and I'm running out of food!

I know where my family lives (a few hours away from me) people were panic buying.

Not been out but most likely, yes. They did last time so can't see this one being any different.

I went to aldi yesterday evening and it looked normal.

Threads like this will encourage more people to panic buy. As soon as word gets out that there are shortages, more people go and buy bits "just in case" and it spirals from there.

If you go and buy more milk and nappies than you normally would, you're contributing to the problem.

Not been out but had a Sainsbury’s delivery this morning. It had a couple of substitutes which were fine and they didn’t have the breaded fish that I like.

DP is CV so we have priority and I’m able to book two weeks in advance. All slot between now and next Sunday are gone but there a few click & collect. Plenty of delivery slots for the following week though.

The problem is, nobody thinks they're part of the problem. Very very few people are buying 10 bags of pasta. But 10 people each buying one extra bag of pasta, which they wouldnt have bought otherwise, has the same effect. Each of those 10 people will think "I'm just buying a little extra just in case" or "stocks looked low and I didnt want to not have any if it runs out".

It's apparently been carnage around here. I've seen lots of posts of empty shelves. My asda order is coming in the next hour or so with only a few sensible subs (apart from the nappies which they've subbed for a smaller size - useful!)

I don't understand the obsession with pasta.

I went to Tesco this morning as needed Bin bags, milk and sandwich meat.

All fine there no issues at all so thought last nights hype was over the top, then I nipped to the local Starbucks late afternoon and there was a massive queue to get into the Lidl next door.

I really don't get it and I speak as someone who is generally well prepped, we're lucky enough to have a pantry and it's always full of dry stuff because it's easier to buy a 4 pack of tomatoes or beans and a big bag of pasta or rice than to buy smaller quantities more regularly.

Barring a few things nothing really ran out in the first lock down, and even if there was no pasta there was something else that it could be subbed for like potatoes or gnocchi or beans. A couple of weeks in the shops were fully stocked again and other than a few queues it was normal.

So why are people flocking to the supermarket to clear shelves?

Toilet paper was gone today from our local tesco and we are down to our last one at home. Otherwise it's not too bad so far.

@Sparklingbrook - I agree - hate the stuff. Nasty, slimy, gloopy foodstuff. Why don't these people try potatoes? They taste better and have more vitamins.

Nope, barely anyone in the shops today. My cousin in a different area however had a meltdown on Facebook yesterday because she went out to buy advent calendars and they were sold out because of "selfish panic buying idiots" making her ashamed to be british. So basically angry because she couldn't panic buy.

Advent Calendars - this week I ordered them from Lindt in Germany. They arrived 2 days later - much better than the stuff you get here.

I have seen a couple of posts on Facebook showing our local tesco with the toilet roll aisle completely empty.
My friend said she had got her delivery and she had 15 subs.
I thought I'd better see if I could book a delivery because I haven't got a car but they were full up for the whole of next week.

OP, having struggled in March to get milk, did you not think about getting an extra tin in the following 5 months?

Asda was as busy as it normally is yesterday for a Saturday afternoon but nothing was sold out or empty shelves. Everyone looked to be just getting their normal shopping there was no trolleys piled high with toilet roll .
Drove past Smyths this morning though and the queue to get into the store was right round the car park. The queue for the McDonald's drive thru was also down the street I thought that was strange though I assume they will stay open for at least the drive thru

I hope not as we are down to our last toilet roll. I need to go and forage for some tomorrow.

I know some people can't afford to, but if you're considering extra now obviously you can afford extra, why didn't you just get one then and put it in the cupboard?

I prep, don't expect everyone to do it on the scale I do but ffs at least enough for 2 weeks isolation.

Yep, the local market town - normally sleepy on a Sunday - was absolutely rammed today. Queues at B&Q while everyone bought up paint for their next DIY lockdown project. Aldi car park so full that not another car could get in.
Sainsbury's and Tesco ditto, bare shelves. Local garden centre crammed with people doing last minute Christmas shopping in case we don't get out of lockdown in 4 weeks.

I went to Asda today, it was very busy but the shelves seemed fine, plenty of pasta, loo roll and tinned tomatoes unlike last time.

I'm gluten intolerant last time people stripped the gluten free aisle of pasta and flour so I would be lying if I said I didnt have a spare bag of gluten free pasta and flour in because stocks have been low since January and our local tesco didnt recover its stocks to previous levels yet even asda has only had two packs on a shelf

Sadly yes. DD2 works at Morrison's and she said the shelves had been wiped of toilet paper (again!!). People have clearly learned nothing from the first lockdown.
