Are people stockpiling in your area?

They are where I am!

Went to pick up a few things from Sainsbury's earlier and they had no bread, no toilet roll and the rice and pasta isle was pretty much empty.

Why are people doing this?!

It's creates a massive knock on effect as then others who weren't originally panic buying then start to think they need too.

I have an 8 month old baby and now I'm thinking should I stock up on her milk & nappies etc? We always keep a couple of tubs in the house as spare anyway but I remember throughout the last lockdown I really struggled to get her some milk! But then if I do that, I'm as bad as them!

It just really stresses me out and I wish people wouldn't do itSad

And to all the smug arseholes questioning the obsession with pasta- its a godsend for families on a limited budget.

Thanks for that because I was wondering.

I honestly dont think it's stockpiling in the sense that people understand it. It's people sensibly making sure they've got enough in to last a couple of weeks. If even 20% of households buy one pack of loo roll a week earlier than they usually would, there will be short term issues in the supply chain.

Why are they doing it now, though? We've had the 14 days self-isolation for months.

Yup, DH went to get food for the lizard this afternoon and morrisons and tesco had queues all up the street, friends say they are almost empty inside. We have a delivery coming tonight and fully expecting most of it to not be there :/

I think they've been reminded constantly over the last few days that things are getting worse and that their chances of having to isolate are becoming more real as numbers increase.

I don't think so. DH is jobless atm so has taken over the shopping and hasn't mentioned any shortages of things we want, although he did say Aldi was stupidly busy at the weekend.

I do wonder how many packs of ‘just in case we can’t get any other sort’ gluten free pasta is still in peoples cupboards from the first lockdown. Just selfish behaviour.

Yes I agree with this one.

My son has Coeliac disease and last lockdown people were buying the GF pasta and GF bread (as it can last a bit longer). A (sort of) friend on FB posted how she had tried the GF bread and declared it "rank" so THREW IT AWAY!!
Someone else bought GF flour and her and her children didn't like the taste of the cakes so put them out for the birds. It made my blood boil I can tell you.

On the other hand I did post on my local FB page asking people to save the GF food for those who needed it medically.
3 people contacted me to give me their unwanted GF pasta and they gave it to me for nothing.
I thought that was really kind as it took courage to own up and not just embarrassedly throw it away.

We came back from a long weekend break yesterday so needed to do a shop. I planned to get everything in Lidl, then pop into Tescos to buy cat food. I couldn't get some of the fruit/veggies I wanted in Lidl and other products were generally low (although not out of stock). Luckily I managed to get the missing items from Tescos, alongside my cat food (shelves half full but I managed to get my boys enough).

Have to admit I didn't have to worry too much about tins/toiletries - I've always been one to have plenty in (just keep more of an eye on keeping topped up now).

But most of it isn’t people being selfish. In the first lockdown I ran out of both toilet roll and pasta, and all the shops were empty of them. Luckily my DPs had some spare toilet paper they gave me. So if I go shopping today and buy one pack of toilet paper and pasta that really doesn’t make me selfish. But if everyone does it then the shelves will be empty again.

Dunno, I’ve stocked up slowly over the last few months so no need to go out and stand in the queues 👌.

I don't know. I think there are a bit. I'm not as it was daft last time. And anyhow all the supermarkets will be open.

I have to book 3 deliveries a week because of limits on items it’s ridiculous

I'm in South Wales and haven't experienced or seen any sort of panic buying, or didn't before our lockdown. Maybe because it was shorter? Or because we were already mostly in 'lockdown' before the firebreak. Who knows?! The psychology of shopping behaviours of the COVID pandemic would make an interesting social study!

Had a delivery today with a number of items missing, and more substituted. The delivery driver said there were shortages due to people 'panic buying'.

Went to Aldi today, frozen veg very low everything else fine, went to sainsburys, butter, margarine and sausages low Hmm must be to do with deliveries. Squash was a bit low in sainsburys as well. No big queue either so all seems fine here. Didn't need any of the low stock just locked out of interest Grin

Still have pasta/rice/UHT milk/tinned tuna/tinned tomatoes and bog roll from last lockdown and from my BREXIT CUPBOARD, so haven't been to shops or have an inclination to stockpile this time. Just fed up with panic and decided to just live my life as normally as I can.
