Are people stockpiling in your area?

They are where I am!

Went to pick up a few things from Sainsbury's earlier and they had no bread, no toilet roll and the rice and pasta isle was pretty much empty.

Why are people doing this?!

It's creates a massive knock on effect as then others who weren't originally panic buying then start to think they need too.

I have an 8 month old baby and now I'm thinking should I stock up on her milk & nappies etc? We always keep a couple of tubs in the house as spare anyway but I remember throughout the last lockdown I really struggled to get her some milk! But then if I do that, I'm as bad as them!

It just really stresses me out and I wish people wouldn't do itSad

@Sparklingbrook

I don't understand the obsession with pasta.

I’m glad it isn’t just me. I can’t remember the last time I ate the stuff.

I needed toilet roll this week. The delivery driver said "oooh you have toilet roll. People were actually fighting over it at the store today..."

Defo stockpiling here, no toilet roll, pasta or bread at Sainsbos and not just the supermarket either, there was a massive queue outside our local B&Q all day today!

Went to Sainsbury’s yesterday morning, not busy and nothing seemed to be low, although we only went in for bread and sugar.

Today I looked online for delivery slots in December, they were available on Friday. Now every slot is by booked and only showing 2 weeks on the website.

Yep. I've been at work today (Waitrose). Crazy busy.

Hopefully supermarkets put restrictions on items like they did last time. Shelves were still pretty empty but at least you had a good chance of getting something.

I've just signed up to a monthly subscription on amazon for baby wipes and nappies. So, shouldn't have to worry about those. But, as for loo roll and everything else, looks like it's going to be a stressful couple of weeks until everyone realises they're being stupid ... AGAIN! Hmm

We went to ASDA late morning today. There was a queue to get in and security on the door were actually holding hand gel and putting it on your hands which I thought was good to see.

The loo roll had a few empty sections but nothing major, didn't see anything else sold out. There was loads of hand gel but I noticed how the price has shot up!

Delivery slots are filling up - sometimes wait is up to eight days.
Beef is scarce and the price has tripled. Some stores setting a limit of two pounds per order.
Traditional holiday foods are selling out - not on the shelves. Cranberry sauce, mincemeat, cinnamon cocoa, can't be found. People who normally would be out shopping are shopping online.

No loo roll in lidl when I went earlier. It's totally bizarre behaviour. We know supermarkets won't be closed, so why do people behave like this?!

I had Morrison delivery yesterday and no substitutions. I always book delivery slots two weeks ahead and had no problem getting new slot for two weeks time. There were some left for the week coming too. I have not been to an actual shop for 3 weeks. The only thing I now stockpile is cat food as I have 4 cats and they eat about 24 tins a week and crunchies too. Last lockdown I could only buy 2 tins at a time so was forced to go to shops every other day as well as online shopping. If I had a small baby I would make sure I had spare tins of baby milk and nappies tbh.

I don’t know because I didn’t go shopping today. You did, day after the lockdown announcement, ‘picking up’ your “few things”.

Report
HeddaGarbled · 02/11/2020 01:14

I ‘pick up a few things’, you ‘do a big shop‘, they ‘stockpile’.

Mother in law went shopping in South London and later told us the pasta had all gone.

I despair.

@MagicSummer

Advent Calendars - this week I ordered them from Lindt in Germany. They arrived 2 days later - much better than the stuff you get here.

Why are they better than the Lindt ones you get here?

I go shopping. I decide to buy 2 packs of pasta instead of 1 because Boris said don’t go out so often. Every other shopper in my town does the same. Shop runs out of pasta. Are we stockpiling, or are we being sensible?

There was a thread like this on here last night, 97% of people said their shops were fine, some of those shops were near me.

So, when my friend phoned up last night about bloody panic buyers and the shop he works at would be mental today rant rant rave rave stress stress... I managed to calm him down & say lots of 'friends' had said otherwise...

He called me after work today, he was shattered. Highest sales since previous lockdown. Looked like a plague of locusts had been through. No eggs or milk left, but dropped eggs & spilt milk on the floor. Total carnage. 🤦🏻‍♀️ & 'he'd told me so'. Ooops.

I have been no where near a shop.

But if I had a baby, I'd buy milk & nappies - not mad loads,but some.

I cook food from scratch which means most of the items I was able to get hold of food wise last time and I managed to cook alternatives to pasta and rice as a side. The only trouble was toilet rolls, calpol, eggs, bread and cooking oils. My local supermarkets are ok right now and I haven't particularly stocked up on any items and yes it's very selfish for people. I will never forget the day from last lockdown when I saw a young mother with a baby in an Asda aisle crying because of the shelves were empty. I just felt so helpless and I hope we don't come across the same scenes again.

Why are they better than the Lindt ones you get here?

Ive never seen Lindt ones here like the ones you get in Germany. Many options, but such fancy chocolates inside. Spectacular packages too.

There are also a huge nimber of traditional advrnt calenders still available there which are difficult to get in the Uk. Nothing inside but pretty pictures. The overall calendars come in lts of lovely designs. With small children its much more meaningful to understand opening another door and counting it down than just grabbing the sweet without thinkng. (The big chocoholics get the lindt)

@KilljoysDutch

Nope, barely anyone in the shops today. My cousin in a different area however had a meltdown on Facebook yesterday because she went out to buy advent calendars and they were sold out because of "selfish panic buying idiots" making her ashamed to be british. So basically angry because she couldn't panic buy.

I don't understand why people would suddenly need extra advent calendars 😂😂😂 don't people just "need" one each?!

I honestly did not think people would panic buy again. But then again, I didn’t expect a second national lockdown. Perhaps very silly of me. But, I really thought people would’ve learnt from last time that there is no need to panic buy. I am definitely kicking myself now that I didn’t prepare more.

People never learn. Brexit will add a whole new level of panic- buying.
