Are people stockpiling in your area?

They are where I am!

Went to pick up a few things from Sainsbury's earlier and they had no bread, no toilet roll and the rice and pasta isle was pretty much empty.

Why are people doing this?!

It's creates a massive knock on effect as then others who weren't originally panic buying then start to think they need too.

I have an 8 month old baby and now I'm thinking should I stock up on her milk & nappies etc? We always keep a couple of tubs in the house as spare anyway but I remember throughout the last lockdown I really struggled to get her some milk! But then if I do that, I'm as bad as them!

It just really stresses me out and I wish people wouldn't do itSad

No panicking here. No need to, supplies are fine and the delivery slots have increased as have the click and collect option.

No need to panic!

joystir59 · 02/11/2020 05:25

I'm lucky to have been able to build a healthy stock of rice pasta tinned goods and toilet paper so I don't need to panic buy. I've built that stock to be prepared for Brexit-related supply chain delays as much as Covid -19.

joystir59 · 02/11/2020 05:33

And to all the smug arseholes questioning the obsession with pasta- its a godsend for families on a limited budget.

Charming.

To be honest OP, your post is doing exactly what you are trying to stop... By you telling people that others are stock piling, it then automatically makes others think that even tho they don't want to panic buy that they better get in some extras incase all the shops are empty.

Any news article or social media telling people not to panic buy does exactly the opposite of what they are trying to achieve!

Bambooble · 02/11/2020 07:19

Nope, things are normal here for now. I would get some milk and nappies though.

Sparklingbrook · 02/11/2020 07:49

I am venturing out this morning. If it’s chaos I won’t hang around. Need some washing powder and other thrilling necessities.

badlydrawnbear · 02/11/2020 07:50

DH went to sainsburys yesterday and said it was fine, no one was panic buying, the shelves were stocked. But I work with people who live across quite a wide area, and on Saturday people on the night shift were saying they had been shopping in the day and their supermarkets had been crazy. It doesn't make sense, as the supermarkets are the only place staying open.

holliem91 · 02/11/2020 15:56

@HeddaGarbled yes like I do every Sunday. I go to my local Sainsbury’s and pick up some necessities and my lunch for the week. Always have done.

I popped into my local supermarket earlier - just before midday - and it was quiet, the way it usually is before the lunch rush. The people that did have trolleys looked like they were doing their usual weekly shop.
The post office on the other hand was rammed! Lots of people, like me, sending letters Special Delivery, so at least we will have a record of documents, etc arriving before businesses close for lockdown.

AdoraBell · 02/11/2020 19:36

Popped into Sainsbury’s to get a bottle of wine. Loo roll shelves were empty, not a roll to be found. Luckily I have some.

Titsywoo · 02/11/2020 19:41

I didn't think people would but i popped into asda to get some bits for dinner and the meat aisle was empty as were most of the veg, pasta, fish and loo rolls. I dread to think what the shops will be like in the week or two before xmas!

MrsPernicious · 02/11/2020 19:41

DD has just got back from Morrisons, we needed eggs and sanpro.
Loo roll isle intact, only thing out of stock was paracetamol.

The shop and their warehouse bit was actually stuffed. Big delivery today, plus they seem to have been holding more stock themselves.

MrsPernicious · 02/11/2020 19:45

@Titsywoo interesting how different places vary so much.
We are currently at tier one, small rural town (pop 20K), three small supermarkets used by lots of surrounding villages. What sort of area are you?

RedToothBrush · 02/11/2020 20:12

If anyone is desparate for stuff then check out online wholesalers who will be desperate for business with restaurants closing.

Big quantities of pasta etc and cheaper. Can be shared out with people you know who may also be struggling.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 02/11/2020 21:49

Was in a local city today

Banks...people queuing in big queues for the banks

I thought there might have been a run on the banks...

Also tier one, in Surrey small town I was passing through while my dd was at an art class.

Legoandloldolls · 03/11/2020 00:31

No idea as I'm just carrying on as normal. Everything was in my click and collect including my pasta. Nothing so far for me to rage against.

Paranoidmarvin · 03/11/2020 06:47

I went shopping on sat morning. I get my food from the free from aisle. A man came in and bought eight packets of pasta. He cleared the shelf. I watched him in horror.

I cannot eat pasta from any other section. I can’t eat a different shape of pasta. Pure selfishness. He then went to the rice cake shelf and bought the entire lot.

Last lockdown I stood next to someone who bought two packs of pasta from the free from aisle. She was saying that she wasn’t gluten free. But as the other aisles had run out she was taking this just incase.

People don’t realise how small a gluten or dairy free range of food is. It’s utter selfishness and I was left having to ration my food as the only aisle I could eat from had been stripped

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2020 06:49

I do wonder how many packs of ‘just in case we can’t get any other sort’ gluten free pasta is still in peoples cupboards from the first lockdown. Angry Just selfish behaviour.

Paranoidmarvin · 03/11/2020 06:54

@Sparklingbrook anyone who is gluten free will tell them that free from food is really rank. So they will open the packet. Cook it. And throw it straight away. And that makes my blood boil even more knowing that would happen.

I can only have rice milk ( stomach and dairy problems ). The aisle was stripped last time. I had no milk what do ever. You bet your life that I went to the shops when I heard about lockdown and got my food etc that I needed. Did I stock pile ? You bet your sweet arse I did. Rationing food last time was beyond horrible and I was not going without food again.
I can only eat a certain pack of sausage I had to ration out a back of eight sausages over about four weeks.

While I am totally against panic buying stockpiling I don’t blame you one bit given your circumstances.
Free From goods are for people who need it. I remember being in the chemist years ago and a lady collecting prescription bread.

Chemeeks · 03/11/2020 07:00

I popped into Aldi yesterday for a few odd bits I needed and it was quiet when I went in by the time I got to the tills it was manic, and the shelves were looking half bare. It's frustrating because I get what I need when I need it, but it does make me think by next week we will be struggling to get the simple things we need. I'm just hoping that where my 4 month old is on specialist milkwe have no problems getting hold of that in the next few weeks

That is horrendous! I am so sorry - this must cause extra anxiety on top of the usual stresses about COVID.

Glad you are stocked-up this time before people who don't even need it buy it all up. Thanks

Stellaris22 · 03/11/2020 13:24

Not here.

I work in a local version of a supermarket and honestly, there's no need to panic buy. Supermarkets are staying open with no supply disruptions.

I understand stocking up in case of isolating as delivery slots can be difficult to get hold of. But panic buying is completely unnecessary.
