✊Support thread for people who are exempt from wearing masks 😷

Hi everyone,

How about a support thread for people who are exempt from wearing masks/face coverings for whatever reason?

I am not exempt and I am able to wear a mask when required so I am lucky in that respect because I do not have to endure the abuse that some people who cannot wear a mask are enduring.

I have seen two threads today (I’m sure there are tons of others) where the OP’s are being lambasted for not being able to wear a mask.
On one thread the OP has a lung condition which causes her to cough sometimes and she wears a mask until it becomes unbearable and needs an inhaler. The OP is clearly exempt but is fed up with the comments she receives when she doesn’t try and wear a mask.
On another thread the OP has both asthma and has experienced horrific sexual abuse resulting in PTSD. Therefore she cannot cover her face in any way with anything (mask, visor, scarf, etc) because it is understandably triggering. Or should I say most reasonable people would find it understandable. The OP has a hidden exemption and is often a target because of this.

Yes, mask exempt people could decorate themselves with lanyards and signs or even go a step further and have a t-shirt made listing their full medical history. But why should they have to? Why can’t they be given the benefit of the doubt?

Where is the compassion in some people? Why can’t some people just accept that we are not all the same and have different experiences in life?
What one person can cope with another might not be able to, I thought that was just common sense.

In my mind it is quite simple, nobody has the right to verbally or physically abuse someone because they are not wearing a mask. Bullying is generally classed as unacceptable in most places, why is mask exemption met with such hostility by some people? I just don’t understand it.

The examples of bullying I have heard of tends to be towards people on their own that don’t look like a threat and not so much towards burly looking people who seem like they could handle themselves in a fight. Just saying.

Can’t we just be kind to each other, if we can’t be kind can’t we just have a little bit of tolerance and if neither of those are possible why not just say nothing and move on? Why the tuts and why the nasty comments by some people?

We are all living through such stressful times, this pandemic doesn’t have to be made any worse.

Well done if you have reached the end of my ramblings. Thank you for reading and stay safe and well everyone.

I have found my people! And I hope people can give me advice and support on what I can do.

So I have multiple disabilities. I have a hearing impairment which means I need to lip read but people obviously don't take off their masks even when asked. Clear face masks aren't great because they steam up so you still can't lip read. I can't wear visors as they rub against the position of my cochlear implant. Masks also get tangled up with my speech processor (outer part that looks like a hearing aid). Sound is muffled too.

I have a visual impairment so being told yeah we'll take off the mask if you stand further back doesn't work for me either as I can't see well enough to social distance. I also have an assistance dog.

I have balance problems due to my hearing and I have M.E so I'm tired, I faint, not supposed to drive, struggle with public transport as well (due to face mask requirement and social distancing). Lifts are restricted to only those who are in wheelchairs Hmm.

I have bought badges and sunflower lanyards and exempt cards and all the rest to no avail. So I stay indoors and only really go out for emergencies or when I have someone with me.

I have a hospital appointment soon and have been told I need to wear a mask and I'm not allowed to bring anyone with me. The hospital is buzzer entry Sad

I am WFH for now which is great but work are talking about making covid secure practices and layouts permanently and don't seem to 'get' that I can never work to such rules. I want to keep working from home but they are talking about me returning in the new year or spring. They seem to think that covid secure applies to everyone when it doesn't.

I need some support and hand holding. I already have mental health problems and in this climate, I just feel worse.

@throwingawaymyshot I'm so sorry! Things must be awful for you.

With the hospital appointment, I'd email them with full details of the difficulties you face and ask for an urgent response on what steps they are going to take to accommodate you. They have a legal duty to do this. How far away is your appt? You may need to involve PALS and/or escalate a formal complaint which may take time. Some hospitals are real arseholes while others are fantastic - Milton Keynes and Stoke Mandeville are both great.

Are you in a union at work? As you clearly can WFH, I would think your employer's would be on dodgy ground if they force you back to work but you should certainly get professional advice. If you're not in a union, could ACAS help?

I really hope you can get at least a few things put in place to make life a bit easier for you Flowers

throwingawaymyshot · 25/10/2020 09:44

My union have previously been great but now what they are saying is oh give it a few months (assuming its just covid 19 related). They are also saying we can give your team some clear face masks (they don't work and what about other departments/security guard / receptionist etc I could encounter?) Also my GP said he'd let the hospital know my needs so we will see how that goes. I will come out with a mega headache and all upset I bet.

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 25/10/2020 09:48

@throwingawaymyshot if it helps, when I had to go into MAU back in the summer, they did let me take a carer with me. I'm a wheelchair user, unable to self propel, need help to use the toilet, and autistic as I said already. The unit agreed that not having someone with me would cause more aggro (due to the amount of help I would need from their staff, and even then I would panic) so did let my DW stay.

Ritascornershop · 25/10/2020 13:29

@VirginiaWolverine I didn’t think retail staff were being jobsworths, what I meant was that it’s not fair it’s a requirement of their jobs now in some cases. And that doesn’t seem fair to me. When I worked in retail it was not something I’d have been up for.

As for working around loads of people, I work with hundreds of kids a day & get flu every year. But I also don’t think I have the right to ask strangers to mask for me so I expect the same in return.

SecretSpAD · 27/10/2020 11:34

@PhilCornwall1 - I'd go straight to the Director of Primary Care at the CCG to complain.

7catsaremycoven · 29/10/2020 10:10

Hi all, just popped back in to check up on you all!

Was previously 8catsisnotunresonable...sadly lost one of our beautiful babies on Sunday so had to change my Halloween name 😭

Currently involved in a spat on In your neighbourhood (or something!) about a post that called people without masks "shits" ! Some idiotic woman called me out on my comments so I've PMd her, directed her to my thread on here and suggested she PMs me back!

I hope she feels good when she reads it - NOT

Stay strong lovely people

ExemptFromMasksSupporter · 29/10/2020 12:00

Hi @7catsaremycoven - I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of one of your cat babies. Sending my condolences to you Flowers

So the intolerance is far and wide. I hope she and other ignorant people can learn something from your thread.
Stay strong too ✊
