✊Support thread for people who are exempt from wearing masks 😷

Hi everyone,

How about a support thread for people who are exempt from wearing masks/face coverings for whatever reason?

I am not exempt and I am able to wear a mask when required so I am lucky in that respect because I do not have to endure the abuse that some people who cannot wear a mask are enduring.

I have seen two threads today (I’m sure there are tons of others) where the OP’s are being lambasted for not being able to wear a mask.
On one thread the OP has a lung condition which causes her to cough sometimes and she wears a mask until it becomes unbearable and needs an inhaler. The OP is clearly exempt but is fed up with the comments she receives when she doesn’t try and wear a mask.
On another thread the OP has both asthma and has experienced horrific sexual abuse resulting in PTSD. Therefore she cannot cover her face in any way with anything (mask, visor, scarf, etc) because it is understandably triggering. Or should I say most reasonable people would find it understandable. The OP has a hidden exemption and is often a target because of this.

Yes, mask exempt people could decorate themselves with lanyards and signs or even go a step further and have a t-shirt made listing their full medical history. But why should they have to? Why can’t they be given the benefit of the doubt?

Where is the compassion in some people? Why can’t some people just accept that we are not all the same and have different experiences in life?
What one person can cope with another might not be able to, I thought that was just common sense.

In my mind it is quite simple, nobody has the right to verbally or physically abuse someone because they are not wearing a mask. Bullying is generally classed as unacceptable in most places, why is mask exemption met with such hostility by some people? I just don’t understand it.

The examples of bullying I have heard of tends to be towards people on their own that don’t look like a threat and not so much towards burly looking people who seem like they could handle themselves in a fight. Just saying.

Can’t we just be kind to each other, if we can’t be kind can’t we just have a little bit of tolerance and if neither of those are possible why not just say nothing and move on? Why the tuts and why the nasty comments by some people?

We are all living through such stressful times, this pandemic doesn’t have to be made any worse.

Well done if you have reached the end of my ramblings. Thank you for reading and stay safe and well everyone.

My son has learning disabilities. He is an adult now but has very little understanding, he doesn’t know there’s a virus or understand what’s going on. He has a lanyard which I didn’t think he would wear but he does. He seems accepting of others wearing masks which I didn’t expect but he won’t wear one himself. So far no one has said anything. I think I it’s pretty obvious he has learning disabilities so maybe that’s why.

ExemptFromMasksSupporter · 23/10/2020 15:20

Greyshaggyrug - Thank you for sharing your experience. I am glad to hear your son hasn’t received any unpleasant comments about not wearing a mask, I do hope this continues.

Well I'm asthmatic, take inhalers daily & I have no problems wearing a mask. I'm just curious as others with asthma state they can't wear one? Is your medication not superseding you're asthma like my medication does mine? Just generally curious that's all....

Well it's not the same for everyone. My ds has asthma, takes inhalers and he does struggle to wear a mask.

RaspberryCoulis · 23/10/2020 18:58

Indeed. My asthma is an awful lot worse in damp, cold weather. I use my inhaler more in December/November than in the rest of the months put together. I can tolerate a mask for the 2 minutes it takes to run into the Co-op grab milk now, as long as I use my inhaler as soon as I get out. If I am having a particularly wheezy day, I won't be able to manage even that.

Shame that however many weeks into this, people are still being such arses.

Unsupportive posts reported.

rubywooooo · 23/10/2020 19:22

PTSD maybe have valid reasons, but according to these doctor's asthmatic's do not. Just wanted to put the proof out there that's all.

PurpleDaisies · 23/10/2020 19:24

Yes. Two YouTube videos constitute “proof”.

rubywooooo · 23/10/2020 19:29

So for those of you that get ambushed in the supermarket for not wearing one 🤔

Evenstar · 23/10/2020 19:30

Sorry to see the usual suspects turning up here as well. I would just like to say that I was treated with real kindness at a shop today, I was hesitant to go in with my lanyard but the lovely lady beckoned me in and had a chat. I think the people who berate us for not wearing masks don’t realise how sad and anxious you feel, I have excluded myself from so much since masks became compulsory, and if the lovely lady hadn’t beckoned me in I wouldn’t have gone in a non essential shop at all.

DianaT1969 · 23/10/2020 19:31

I'm confused where the medically exempt people are going that they need to wear a mask? Where are they when they are being challenged? If they go to a hospital appointment, presumably they show their exemption. Job done. They are ill, so don't want to catch Covid-19, so they don't have to go out shopping - everything can be delivered online.
That only leaves public transport, or being in a public facing role at work. What am I missing? I wear it to a supermarket once a week. But I could shop online if I wanted to avoid that.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 23/10/2020 19:43

Do you have a link to the information that someone with PTSD is at increased risk with Covid?

NotAnActualSheep · 23/10/2020 19:44

Aaaaargh! People on the thread have given several examples of times when wearing a mask has triggered asthma attacks. Yet ruby says that this can't happen because two doctors on YouTube have said it, and it doesn't affect her. Are the people who have demonstrated that it does affect them lying?! That is an outrageous and incredibly insulting claim! Maybe, just possibly, it's not the oxygen levels alone that trigger attacks in some people? Maybe they could be triggered by different air temperature within a mask, or moisture, or something touching their face, or the dispersion of the exhaled air? But because it doesn't happen to you, that is no reason at all to believe it couldn't possibly happen to anyone. FGS have a bit of empathy...

I am asthmatic and I wear a mask about 13 hours a day 4 days a week due to my job and having no other option......

.......but my inhalers have had to be upped so my preventer in now a combination inhaler.

I have had 1 minor asthma attack and one more serious so I am now on oral steroids.

My main triggers are smoke and hot humid air. The summer was torture in a mask when it was hot. Now at work they have turned on the heating -- unable to control this by individual department - it is just on and blasting away - so almost as hot as the summer - so I spend most of the day breathing in my own hot humid air. I am really not looking forward to Bonfire night - the beginning of lockdown was a nightmare when it seemed like everyone around here was having BBQs and bonfires.

It is not about my O2 sats dropping - it is about what triggers MY asthma!

There have been some days I have been so SoB by the time I get home I cannot talk - or I had to use my reliever so much in the day my HR is sky high.

DianaT1969 · 23/10/2020 21:33

@Bamboozledandbefuddled - good point. People with PTSD would want to avoid catching it because if they can't tolerate masks (understandably) they wouldn't want to risk a hospital stay with oxygen mask, or worse, ICU. Nor would they want the potential exhaustion, breathing issues and headaches of long Covid. Who does? Nobody.
I'm genuinely trying to find out where they are being challenged. It must be on public transport on their way to work - or in a public service role at work.

I go out for exercise, to the park, meet friends in outside coffee shops, go to the supermarket once a week (I occasionally get a delivery so don't always have to do that). I'm not travelling due to the pandemic. So I'm not a hermit, but I never need to wear a mask, apart from 20 minutes in Sainsbury's.
Genuinely interested.
