Another one in tears here too! Fucking BRILLIANT NEWS!!

Numberblock7 · 09/11/2020 12:23

I believe Kate Bingham said to science committee we might have about 4m of Astra Zeneca and 10m of Pfizer by the end of the year. So not the full 30m, but still good news.

2020CanDoOne · 09/11/2020 12:26

November is really making up for the rest of the year right?! I’m not used to all this hope. Grin

Deliaskis · 09/11/2020 12:27

14 million by the end of the year though....is a significant chunk of the population....it will start to have an impact.

PullTheBricksDown · 09/11/2020 12:31

Also tearful here! I am absolutely stoked about the vaccine news. It won't be instant but the hope it brings is vital. We are going to get past this!

FuzzyPuffling · 09/11/2020 12:42

Isn't it great news?

I know they said Pfizer would be the first to partially unblind, but I wonder how close AZ are to unblinding theirs? Wouldn't it be fabulous if that also shows to be effective?

I'll definitely take 90%, as will my shielding DH.

Fizbosshoes · 09/11/2020 12:56

@MarshaBradyoAh ok. Yeh there’s a fair few orders listed in pp

Sorry I posted before I saw a few of the previous replies

Blownaway1 · 09/11/2020 12:57

Read the news earlier. Had a little cry. Came straight to this thread to check out the reactions. Amazing news and 90% is way better than we’ve been prepped for isn’t it.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 09/11/2020 12:59

I am absolutely thrilled. I never expected it to be this positive. This is such a huge moment and the fact it's come just after Biden getting in is even better.

Fizbosshoes · 09/11/2020 12:59

That's around 20% of the uk population isnt it?
Hoping that will be enough to start easing some of the restrictions. I dont think there was ever an expectation that everyone would be (or have the opportunity to be) vaccinated anyway, at least in the first instance.

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 09/11/2020 13:03

Does anyone know if the Pfizer vaccine needs one or two doses?
Amazing news!!!

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 09/11/2020 13:03

Someone in government already said if you can vaccinate 20% of the population (i.e the old and vulnerable, health workers, etc) you solve 80% of the problem. Or something like that. And obviously we want everyone vaccinated if possible but it'll make the most massive difference.

Fizbosshoes · 09/11/2020 13:05

I think the bbc article said you needed 2 shots, 3 weeks apart.

wildbarnet · 09/11/2020 13:07

@GoldenOmber

The third week of November is for the American FDA I think, which is asking for two months of safety data after a set number of people have had the full two doses. So maybe different with EMA and MHRA which would apply here and haven’t asked for that set 2-month thing, or maybe Pfizer will hold off until end November for all regulators. Either way, that’s soon.

And despite all the “a vaccine won’t be a silver bullet!” gloomy warnings, I reckon a 90% effective vaccine would come pretty close to a silver bullet!

I know it wiii help a lot normal life to resume in 2021
PullTheBricksDown · 09/11/2020 13:07

@MarmiteCrumpet25 it's two doses and you are protected from a week after getting the second dose. So it will take a month in all. That's doable.

Incredible!

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 09/11/2020 13:09

I’m getting shivers Grin

Orangeblossom7777 · 09/11/2020 13:13

The UK has bought 30m doses – enough for 15 million people because two doses are required.

UK pop around 66 million. I guess maybe the most vulnerable could have it which is good

MadisonAvenue · 09/11/2020 13:13

Checked my phone while out walking the dog, burst into tears.
Got home, my husband’s back to WFH and he was waiting on the drive to tell me 😂

Deliaskis · 09/11/2020 13:14

One of the challenges with the Pfizer one is the storage protocol as it needs to be kept at something like -70 degrees.

But this is a good news thread, so we can bask in the good news, and hope that people in health trusts are right now finalising setup of enormous cold storage facilities.

FuzzyPuffling · 09/11/2020 13:15

For my CEV DH and CV me it will make a HUGE difference to our lives.
For the past 8 months we have been enclosed in our house, rarely straying out ( when we were at last "allowed" it had got far too busy) and we have really suffered mentally.

This would be an utter game changer for us. I'm feeling more than a little emotional!

AlexandraEiffel · 09/11/2020 13:16

Prof John bell of Oxford, asked on radio 4 just now, will life be back to normal by spring next year, a resounding yes

Yes can confirm this is definitely happening! Our Trust has been planning on the basis of super cold storage for a couple of months now.
