@sashagabadon

Yes it is overblown in here but really is quite a few of the same posters determined to see the absolute worst in everything. Must be exhausting! I told my mother in law in June she’d be vaccinated by Xmas - I didn’t really believe it, I was 70% sure but turns out I was right by a day Grin She’d told all her friends what I said and they now think I am a wise sage. I’m not of course just an optimist by nature and sometimes things do work out ok Smile
I'm not an optimist by nature lol, but somehow I have felt optimistic for quite a while now about science coming to the rescue.

When I saw the headline I had visions of people licking there phones @BlueBlancmange Grin

tobee · 12/12/2020 22:12

*their phones

@chri55ie

There was one particular poster who I think really enjoyed putting the fear of God into everyone. He used to write such terrifying things with complete conviction. I avoided all the threads apart from this one
Climbdad?
Loopyloui · 12/12/2020 22:44

Honestly I have been reading posts on here saying life won't go back to normal until 2022/23 and it put the fear of god in me

OliveTree75 · 13/12/2020 16:23

www.theguardian.com/science/2020/dec/11/coronavirus-uk-scientists-identify-drugs-that-may-help-severe-cases

Scientists have identified 5 genes which they think are linked to severe cases. Trialling drugs they think will help!

TheKeatingFive · 13/12/2020 16:29

Climbdad?

His posting was appalling. There was a suspicion that he had a particular agenda I believe.

chri55ie · 13/12/2020 16:33

Yes would explain things!

tootyfruitypickle · 13/12/2020 18:07

Ooh his initials backwards DC ...!!!

TheChineseChicken · 13/12/2020 18:45

Saw this in a BBC article. Let’s hope it’s based on something concrete: “... the chances of the Oxford University vaccine being rolled out by the end of the year are "pretty high", the vaccine's architect Prof Sarah Gilbert has told the BBC.”

chri55ie · 13/12/2020 18:55

Yes that was from the Andrew Marr show today. She was interviewed on it. I am really hoping this week for approval. They must be close. Seeing more nonsense being spouted on the other threads today

TheChineseChicken · 13/12/2020 19:25

I’ve hidden the CV topic - just have this thread saved in my watched threads. My cortisol levels can’t handle it!

TeaInTheGarden · 13/12/2020 19:31

Does anyone have a link to the Sarah Gilbert interview by any chance?

chri55ie · 13/12/2020 19:35

If you google Sarah Gilbert Andrew marr it’s on YouTube. I found it there earlier

GoldenOmber · 13/12/2020 19:39

I think some of those people find pessimism the best approach for their own psychological health, and some of them just love the doom and drama. And I bet a lot of the “we won’t get back to normal until 2023 ah the earliest” people were also the “there’ll never be a vaccine” people.
BlueBlancmange · 13/12/2020 20:28

Why the need to convince every one else to adopt the same approach though?

GoldenOmber · 13/12/2020 20:39

I suppose if pessimism is your coping strategy, then anything that might make you feel less pessimistic needs to be shut down and dismissed?

It has definitely been one of the weirder things about this pandemic, the number of people who really seem to want to cling to worst-case scenarios for whatever reason. I find it easier to understand if it's fear/coping, harder to understand when it's coming from the people who seem to take outright delight in doom gloom and misery. Remembering a poster in the early days here who talked loads about how awful it was going to be, and I don't think he thought he was enjoying himself but it certainly sounded like that to others. Posted things like "The dam is about to burst!" when a hospital temporarily closed, and "Wait until someone sneezes near you and you're shaking with fear because you know what's coming," and had these detailed predictions about how the NHS would collapse twice over because of all the injuries from street fights and riots following covid. Was a bit odd.

I just watched that Sarah Gilbert interview on Andrew Marr and it's great. Starts about 36 minutes in: She says that if there's no huge spike in cases around January, then things could be pretty much back to normal by summer.

GoldenOmber · 13/12/2020 20:41

Oh, that link doesn't work, sorry. This should:

tobee · 13/12/2020 20:57

People are weird. That's been underlined these last moments. Then there's the "Sorry not sorry that I was proven right" brigade. Makes you wonder if they are bots or something. 🤷🏻‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 13/12/2020 21:02

Also it builds momentum the doom posters get angrier at positivity and people post less.

bloodpressureboiling · 13/12/2020 21:06

@KitKatastrophe Hi! I think we need a third thread!

tootyfruitypickle · 13/12/2020 21:08

There’s a thread running where the negative posters are talking about how much abuse they’ve had, which is not the way round I’ve seen it .

I’m sure that Sarah Gilbert went on as a precursor to approval this week (assuming she may have had a heads up?). Fingers crossed as this would be much needed good news .

Jrobhatch29 · 13/12/2020 21:08

Yes I have definitely noticed this! Lots of regular posters who were more positive or balanced seem to have given up. I try not to open alot of the threads now because I get too worked up ha!
chri55ie · 13/12/2020 21:13

That is exactly what I think!! Fingers crossed for approval this week. She sounds pretty certain it’s coming soon!

TeaInTheGarden · 13/12/2020 21:14

Thanks for the link @GoldenOmber

Everything crossed for waking up to oxford approval one day this week 🤞🏻
