Schools Reopening?

A major, peer reviewed study into transmission in South Korea has established that tweens and teenagers spread the SARSCOV2 virus more than any other age group.

The study involved more than 65,000 people and used South Korea’s exceptionally effective contact tracing system to look at who brought the virus into households. Tweens and teenagers were the highest index case age group. Younger children transmitted at the same rate as 20-somethings.

This is a large scale, rigorous piece of research that proves children are effective at transmitting the virus. It was conducted in a country that implements strict social distancing and mask wearing among children. The authors say the rate of transmission would have been higher if children weren’t subjected to those measures.

Plans to reopen schools more or less as normal in September will place many lives at risk, and increase the likelihood schools will have to close again. The government needs to acknowledge schools will be highly efficient vectors of viral transmission and change its reopening plans.

Ok, so I didn't say it wasn't nice then?? Thanks muchly.

Continuation of thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3973425-Schools-reopening-2

@openplankitchen I am NOT a teacher , just a mere parent.

The fact that you pulled the 'race card' is despicable. SOME posters on here may not necessarily be white British. We on MN can't see or don't know eachother.

Jeez, many of us here have differing herritge.

I'm sorry you feel that way but I'm sure it was meant towards your comments and not directed at you personally.

Perhaps educate yourself on the causes of exponential growth and come back.

Right, I've said it.

Pulled the race card?!

I was referred to as it!

That's inhuman and you know it

MoreW1ne · 20/07/2020 22:58

Ascl have been sending out some good guidance piggy. But yea I am surprised with the neu at this stage I wonder if they're trying to work behind the scenes now schoolld have pretty much packed up anyway. Perhaps theyll see how things pan out over the next 3 weeks. A full summer of negative public image probably wouldn't work well.

Pomegranatepompom · 20/07/2020 22:59

@syskywalker That's appalling.
It is very rare even for someone who is immune compromised to die from c. pox. It is very treatable with oral/IV Acyclovir although a prolonged course is required.
There is no current evidence that immune compromised children have a significantly higher mortality rate - I will be able to link this. The isolation guidelines are currently being reviewed for this group.

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2020 22:59

Nowt from NAS either. the leaders have different people to support. And Unison absolutely should be going for it with TAs!

CallmeAngelina · 20/07/2020 23:00

I was referred to as it!

No. You were not.

SmileEachDay · 20/07/2020 23:00

I had an email from the NEU the other day, and my sister had a similar one from the NAHT - both saying essentially “we haven’t forgotten about you but we want everyone to have the chance to rest so we won’t be bombarding you - but we’re still working on this”

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2020 23:01

I am dubious of any data that comes out on children whilst they were in lockdown.

Barbie222 · 20/07/2020 23:01

That is encouraging @Pomegranatepompom - good news for children shielding for this reason.

Pomegranatepompom · 20/07/2020 23:02

Yes there will be lots of variables but many (it not all) of these children had contact with hospitals/HCP and family members that couldn't feasibly shield due to work commitments etc

openplankitchen · 20/07/2020 23:03

@TheHoneyBadger

It doesn’t bother itself with facts.
Ok @CallmeAngelina ...
MoreW1ne · 20/07/2020 23:04

I think the unions only have two big plays. Either try and go masks for kids like other countries. Or push for part time days. Hopefully with masks becoming more common in Scandinavia and france/germany that idea may be pushed more in the run up to september.

CallmeAngelina · 20/07/2020 23:04

Yes, I got that too, plus one about an upcoming course about advice for dealing with students suffering with mental health issues. Nothing about much else. Maybe they're waiting for this August 11th thing - whatever that is.

There is no point in feeling sorry for open

In a few days she will reinvent herself and rename and be back to their normal game.

No point in calling out a woman being referred to as it... right ok..

FrippEnos · 20/07/2020 23:11

@MoreW1ne

I suspect that the reason that the unions are quiet is because the next bog education announcement is on the 12th Aug.

You can't really argue points when they may change.

But the bigger issue is that the government could change a whole load of things and schools have very little time to implement them.

catsarecute · 20/07/2020 23:12

Thank you OP for this thread and I completely agree with you.

I literally feel sick at the thought of schools being back full time in September. I am vulnerable but not shielding and very worried about the impact the virus would have on my health. My son is in a secondary school, 180 children in his year group and 1,200 in the school.
I would by far prefer some sort of blended learning approach to reduce the numbers in school at any one time.

I do think that secondary age pupils should be wearing masks.
They're not even doing daily temperature checks on the children, as it's not in the guidance. I appreciate it's not a fool proof method, but it is low cost (only the outlay for the initial thermometers), could be done at registration each day. I know it would take a few minutes out of the school day but after what we've been through in lockdown I think the effort is worth it, to pick up any symptomatic pupils quickly so that they can be isolated and tested asap.

I have written to my son's school, local councillors and my MP to request that temperature checks are implemented either locally or nationally (within the guidance), and would also encourage anyone else to write if they think that this would be a sensible precaution. Temperature checks wouldn't fully resolve my concerns but would go some way towards reassuring me that cases will be picked up more quickly.

oldbagface · 20/07/2020 23:13

@openplankitchen you specifically state that it was an issue as you are a black woman. The 'IT' comment was directed at your noneseicacal diatribe.

Are you professional at this? By that I mean wind ups, rewrittng history and ignoring statistics and facts?

FrippEnos · 20/07/2020 23:15

@oldbagface

I suspect that "she" is an old hand at this.

But its also worth remembering that this is the internet and "she" may not even be a "she".

openplankitchen · 20/07/2020 23:15

@oldbagface who do you refer to irl as it? Or is it only ok online. I'm a professional woman and bame. Not ashamed. Not an it.

CallmeAngelina · 20/07/2020 23:16

And no one on this thread can have had any idea of your ethnicity until you posted that.

MoreW1ne · 20/07/2020 23:17

Why the fuck do you think being a women or black is important. Sure be a little cross about being called it (or realistically being called out as a troll) but the fact are black or a women is irrelevant (like half your posts).

Blimey!
That bodes well for warm air heaters once we get to October.
