Schools Reopening?

A major, peer reviewed study into transmission in South Korea has established that tweens and teenagers spread the SARSCOV2 virus more than any other age group.

The study involved more than 65,000 people and used South Korea’s exceptionally effective contact tracing system to look at who brought the virus into households. Tweens and teenagers were the highest index case age group. Younger children transmitted at the same rate as 20-somethings.

This is a large scale, rigorous piece of research that proves children are effective at transmitting the virus. It was conducted in a country that implements strict social distancing and mask wearing among children. The authors say the rate of transmission would have been higher if children weren’t subjected to those measures.

Plans to reopen schools more or less as normal in September will place many lives at risk, and increase the likelihood schools will have to close again. The government needs to acknowledge schools will be highly efficient vectors of viral transmission and change its reopening plans.

Just report the posts .

As a black woman being referred to as it is unforgivable.

noblegiraffe · 20/07/2020 21:58

pomegranate the results released that are ‘promising’ are for Phase I/II trials. Phase I/II trials are tests of safety. They also tested for immune response stimulation, which is also promising.

BUT what happens next is a Phase III trial which is a massive international effort. It’s the Phase III trial that tests whether the vaccine is effective - i.e. it’s no good if it stimulates an immune response but that doesn’t actually protect against infection.

You can’t rush a Phase III trial - it’s not a case of give everyone the vaccine and then by the end of the week say ‘no one caught COVID, we are good to go’. It’s a randomised, double-blinded controlled trial - participants will be given the Covid vaccine, or, I believe, a meningitis vaccine. Once the trial ends they need to do a statistical analysis of whether the Covid vaccine did better than the meningitis vaccine at preventing Covid (To account for placebo effect). As it’s double-blinded, no one knows who in the trial has had which vaccine, and there’s no peeking at the results. So if you’re dealing with patients on the trial and no one is getting Covid, all that shows is that no one is getting covid, even if they’ve only been vaccinated against meningitis.

open

Don’t feed it = don’t feed the obvious trolling.

Report them for troll hunting if you’re bothered.

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2020 21:58

Wow feenie. Interesting.

CallmeAngelina · 20/07/2020 21:59

I took a look at that FB page the other day. It was an eye-opener for sure!

cantkeepawayforever · 20/07/2020 22:01

Openplan,

I quoted Angelina's post, having read the pronoun 'it' as meaning 'don't feed this argument'.

I apologise if you had read it as referring to a person - I can see that it could be read that way, and agree that is deeply unpleasant.

Equally, failing to admit a mistake is unpleasant, though of a smaller magnitude - are you happy to admit that it was NOT the unions who prevented wider re-opening, and that you stating so as if this was a fact was a mistake?

Pomegranatepompom · 20/07/2020 22:02

@Barbie222 yes the environments are entirely different, it’s interesting though as this data included immune compromised groups, you’d imagine it would be higher.

@noblegiraffe thanks for all that info.

openplankitchen · 20/07/2020 22:02

@SmileEachDay no one said dont feed it. They referred to me as it. I am not if. I am a woman. A mother. A professional.

Feenie · 20/07/2020 22:03

You get the feeling reading it that none of them believe in the moon landing either.....

Ickabog · 20/07/2020 22:05

@CallmeAngelina

cantkeepaway, Don't feed it.
no one said dont feed it.

Now you're just rewriting history.

CallmeAngelina said exactly that. Confused

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2020 22:05

What happens if you click you don't agree for the questions to join the group. Is it an echo chamber perchance?

SmileEachDay · 20/07/2020 22:07

I’ve just tried to join Piggy and I clicked “no”.

Let’s see what they say...

Feenie · 20/07/2020 22:09

I decided I couldn't answer the questions the way the group wanted in good conscience so I just closed the page. I was accepted a few minutes later!

oldbagface · 20/07/2020 22:09

openplankitchen · 20/07/2020 22:09

Will no teachers on here condemn a woman being referred to as it?? Wow!

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2020 22:10

I actually think it might be bad for my blood pressure to join so I won't.

Ryanair by the way are potentially in hot water for not heeding guidelines. re profiteering over guidance on seating passengers on planes.

Only bellends like Michael O'Leary believe guidance should be completely ignored.

Ickabog · 20/07/2020 22:11

@openplankitchen

Will no teachers on here condemn a woman being referred to as it?? Wow!
No I won't condemn it, because that isn't what happened.
StaffAssociationRepresentative · 20/07/2020 22:11

Da Funky Elephants will update guidelines around Results Day so I guess a few days after that we will know what reopening might look like.

openplankitchen · 20/07/2020 22:13

I'm pretty sure that's gaslighting @Ickabog but whatever

cantkeepawayforever · 20/07/2020 22:15

Openplan, you yourself stated that nobody said 'Don't feed it', when that was exactly what was said - are you gaslighting yourself??

openplankitchen · 20/07/2020 22:21

@cantkeepawayforever yep lol. I'm gaslighting myself. Being referred to as it is actually ok and normal and not derogatory. Phew!

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2020 22:22

Have you reported the posts?

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2020 22:24

It is not nice to refer to any person, male ,female or otherwise as it.

CallmeAngelina · 20/07/2020 22:26

@Piggywaspushed

It is not nice to refer to any person, male ,female or otherwise as it.
Well no, quite. But as I didn't...
