When will people be happy to start living with the risk of catching Coronavirus?

Considering there possibly won't be a vaccination for quite some time, if at all, but things are going to have to start returning to normal for the sake of everything else - economy, education, other health issues etc. There is currently so much opposition to easing out of lockdown, people will have to get back to work and schools cannot be part time for years (childcare issues plus the massive impact on disadvantaged dc, plus the dc not engaging in home learning). Spoke to a few people today who are horrified at the thought of a return to normal as they are frightened of catching the virus. I was a bit surprised a they were under 35 with dc (no known health problems). It's like they think it's just going to miraculously vanish.

I don't know, maybe when there are enough deaths from lockdown that people realise that creating a huge range of serious risks, for children and for adult of all ages, in order to avoid one relatively small risk is absolute and utter madness. It'd be great if they could do it before the deaths happen but that's unlikely as the ability to reason seems to have left so many people.

I'm 2 years on from treatment for breast cancer, which has left me with chronic heart failure, putting me on the clinically vulnerable list, but not shielding.

I'm also a primary school teacher. Luckily my year group aren't back in yet and my boss is happy for me to continue working from home, but this won't go on forever.
I have already spent 2 yrs scared shitless that cancer will come back and take me away from my 6 and 9 yr old boys. Can you imagine how I feel now?

People have forgotten the lockdown was to flatten the curve, not to eliminate the virus.

I have been from the outset really. There is a remote possibility I had it in March (but it was more likely to have been another virus) but without an antibody test I'll never know and if I used t-cells to fight it off, I really won't know.

I am not that bothered about the illness itself - more the fact that some people are suffering nasty post-viral symptoms and I don't like the idea of that.

I am 29, pregnant, and I am getting back into the world. I have educated myself about the risks in life (car accidents, other illnesses and diseases, chances of being robbed on the high street), and know coronavirus is just another risk in life. I will take precautions but I am happy to return to life now.

It's the school thing that's annoying me the most. The current home learning is unsustainable but I can't see Unions allowing teachers back in any way to enable normal education to resume. It's incredibly worrying.

We were talking about it tonight and not planning to return to “normal” any time soon. We are in Scotland so still have a five mile restriction. So far we are mostly staying at home. Tesco click and collect weekly and bread/milk/fruit box delivery as required. Dh (70’s) me, mid 50’s and ds (13) are all getting on fine working from home. Ds has asthma so none of us are in the low, low risk groups. When we can travel a bit further we will go to our favourite, very quiet, places for walks but otherwise will reassess For the schools going back in August.

I’m hopeful that they will find a vaccine but also that other medications, anti virals and other currently used drugs, some of which are already being trialled, will be found to be useful in preventing some of the deaths, long term effects and symptoms meaning that if we do catch it our chances of intact survival are improved.

I’m wondering the same OP. I understand that vulnerable people still need to shield now. But when will those that aren’t vulnerable feel they can go back to work/school. How on earth will schools be able to open in Sept if we’re all still like this? Again, absolutely fair enough for those with health issues but many are scared to take the ‘risk’ when really they have no need to be eg. No health issues, no vulnerable family.
For example I spoke to a parent today (I’m a teacher) who won’t be sending her child back next week. Fine, not a problem. She explained she and kids were shielding. Also fine. But then told me she was in Asda doing the big shop with the kids, it was noisy in the background. They were going to MDs next.
How is Asda safe but school not? How many kids will be in Primark/McDs next week but not think school is safe enough?
We have to start working towards getting those who are healthy out of lockdown. People are scared. They see Good Morning Britain counting the deaths on a constant roll with no explanation that many are 80+ and many are in care homes (I’m not saying that’s a good thing btw).

I was happy to live with the risk of catching it right from the beginning. I did catch it and, as I knew was statistically likely (hence not being that bothered), it didn't affect me particularly badly.

I have been since the start to be honest. On a personal level, I'm not particularly scared of catching it. If lockdown hadn't been imposed I'd have happily carried on as normal.

When infection rates are lower - closet to what Germany have now, I think.

I’m pretty happy to crack on with a lot of life now with reasonable precautions (masks, limited gatherings, tracing). I would have liked our case numbers much lower but then I’ve disagreed with a lot of our actions during this pandemic and am fairly resigned to compromise at this point. Whilst our hospitals aren’t overrun right now I would fully support further lockdowns (ideally regional imho) if they were overwhelmed again.

I don’t think it’s possible to pick up where we left off because as other posters have pointed out we really have no idea what the long term effects are. If I or one of my family get it then so be it but the aim should be to avoid it.

I am now. I am a nurse, I have worked throughout. I am a single parent to two primary aged children. The current situation with schooling is not sustainable particularly and I think we all need to begin living our lives again.

it’s not something I’m concerned about tbh - loads of things about this terrible situation worry me but developing covid isn’t one of them.

Also, my friend lost her husband. Mid 50’s, no underlying medical conditions. Very fit, very sporty. This has undoubtedly affected my feelings and response to the virus.

I want to continue working from home but that's only because I don't want to go back to work wearing a mask and sitting in a Perspex box!

I'm a teacher and i'm ready. I'm concerned but I got my head around it early on, accepted it may take my elderley parents. Hoped I'd avoid it and carried on. The mixed messages from the govt and media have scared a lot of people to death!

I do feel for anybody shielding though, or with shielders in their family.

Never for me unfortunately.
Dh is shielded, so unless we live separately, I will continue to be terrified of catching it.
We are all living in very different circumstances in this current world op.
