Just seen on daily fail (sorry!) that Boris is going to announce that we will be lockdown until June at least.

Not sure if I can cope that long. 😩

We ignored all the findings from that (pandemic preparation) exercise, cut stocks of PPE and didn't even bother to make good the shortfalls highlighted by 'Cygnus. 4 years later and the govt still won't publish its findings ...

And that's exactly why I've no faith in promises of sufficient PPE or even tests now that targets are constantly being missed
It's clearly not going to happen, so there's little point in pushing things back while government scramble for excuses as to why they've failed yet again
For me, we might as well accept this reality and start thinking more about the long term and less about the next headline

@Whataloadofshite you do realise that it's not that simple to some people? Not everyone can cope.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 30/04/2020 13:43

Well said @GrimmsFairytales

All you saying "Well we have to sit it out" blah blah .
People are ALLOWED to be fed up of this you know !

cantory · 30/04/2020 13:44

So much doom mongering on this thread.
There will be a vaccine, several international companies are working on one now, testing it on humans. It showed good initial results on animals.
There will be better treatment options such as plasma therapy being tried out.
There will be better preventative methods to stop people getting so ill. So role of Vitamin D is emerging. Ensuring you are not deficient is an easy measure.
This is what time buys us.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 30/04/2020 13:44

@Whataloadofshite . Tell that to people with mental illness who feel more and more and more isolated !!

Bully for YOU that you can cope

Mascotte · 30/04/2020 13:45

There’s no evidence that children spread the virus to adults as confirmed by the WHO. Children should be allowed to mix, preferably back at school.

cantory · 30/04/2020 13:45

@Rainbow12e I hope they only let those go back that are not shielded and where people can socially distance.

Greenpoppins · 30/04/2020 13:46

@PinkSparklyPussyCat Exactly. I sadly know two people who have died in the past month. One from coronavirus (before their time) and one tragically took their own life (well, well before their time). It's not simply a case of people coping, it's what we can actually live with long term.

cantory · 30/04/2020 13:47

@Mascotte PINK has done an online interview saying she caught it from her son.
And please provide proof the WHO said that. What I read was no evidence that children without any symptoms can spread it, but that no evidence is not the same as saying it is not possible.

GabsAlot · 30/04/2020 13:47

of course it will be until june-people are fulroughed till then and shielding lasted until mid june-we havent reached the five stages they want and the review isnt until nxt week anyway

i dont think any restriction will be lifted on the 7th either

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/04/2020 13:48

Because the economy will recover.

How will it recover? How long will it take? How high to you think unemployment can go? How will we pay for it? How many people do you think is acceptable to lose their homes in the name of staying in?

How will the state afford social care after that? Where are benefits and ciivl service budgets going to come from? What about pensions? The NHS?

Many of the tools for stimulating have been exhausted, interest rates can't be cut any further. What do you think should happen to help the recovery?

maddy68 · 30/04/2020 13:48

They increase it in three week stages for a reason. So it doesn't seem a big long chunk. It's right though. We need it.

cantory · 30/04/2020 13:48

And the mental health of some people with serious mental health problems has improved.
We don't even know if suicides overall have increased. Sadly a lot of people in the UK every month do end their own life. Look at 2019 figures. Lots of people.

PhilCornwall1 · 30/04/2020 13:49

Yes I think by June, there will be no option but to let everyone go back to work as this is when furlough ends.

What about the people who aren't on furlough where companies are just making them redundant.

Furlough is not the magic bullet, far from it.

lockedinfornow · 30/04/2020 13:49

I don't think it will go on at next review. I think certain things will be lifted. We can visit family and friends as long as not in big groups for example. Just my opinion.

cantory · 30/04/2020 13:50

In last quarter of 2019 about 470 people a month in the UK killed themselves.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/04/2020 13:51

the economy will recover

Eventually perhaps, Cantory, but I'm more concerned about the collateral damage before that happens
There's also the point that today's government may be nowhere in sight by then so wouldn't have to pick up the pieces, which perhaps explains the obsession with today's headlines instead of the longer term

As James Freeman Clarke rightly said, "A politician thinks of the next election. A statesman, of the next generation"

cantory · 30/04/2020 13:51

@PhilCornwall1 Sadly those people will have to look for another job. Care homes seem to be desperate to recruit.

justasking111 · 30/04/2020 13:52

Saw grandchild this morning 2 metres distance on his birthday out doors was bloody hard. Even after June, older people may still find themselves locked away.

PhilCornwall1 · 30/04/2020 13:53

@cantory oh well that's ok then. I'm sure I am well experienced to work in a care home!!!

MarshaBradyo · 30/04/2020 13:53

The DM change their story each time.

It might be but I wouldn’t rely on anything reported on lockdown yet.

Drivingdownthe101 · 30/04/2020 13:53

Do you think there are enough carer jobs for the millions of people who will be unemployed?

Drivingdownthe101 · 30/04/2020 13:53

I’d be a fucking awful carer anyway.

GabsAlot · 30/04/2020 13:53

lockedinfornow why do you think it will be lifted next week

we havent reached any sort of consistant drop of numbers yet and testing isnt anywhere it should be
