Just seen on daily fail (sorry!) that Boris is going to announce that we will be lockdown until June at least.

Not sure if I can cope that long. 😩

Amazing how many MNers slag off the Daily Mail yet read it or quote from it

About six weeks ago in the run-up to Lockdown, the DM & Telegraph were eerily accurate in their daily assertions - now I wonder why that would be? Hmm

This government is hardly going to helpfully leak information to The Guardian are they.

notalwaysalondoner · 30/04/2020 13:56

I hope it doesn’t - I have several colleagues who were former doctors who went on leave to rejoin the NHS. They’ve all been sent back. The nightingale hospitals are empty. I struggle to see a real justification to be honest. There will always be a risk of a second peak unless you eliminate all cases which is clearly impossible. The PPE issue does need to be sorted, I agree, but at least partial relaxation of lockdown should start as the trade offs aren’t worth it any more - the NHS isn’t overloaded.

justasking111 · 30/04/2020 13:56

We have to face it numbers are not dropping, that is not to say it is not regional.

cantory · 30/04/2020 13:57

@Drivingdownthe101 I think a lot of people will turn their nose up at these jobs at not being good enough for them.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 30/04/2020 13:58

We all have to cope. That's how it is

Righto then I'll just let my recently bereaved dad that he'll just have to cope without his family with him. He'll just have to spend his time on his own with his grief it's the least he could do because PEOPLE ARE DYING!! because "that's how it is".

Mascotte · 30/04/2020 13:58

@cantory well.. if pink says it it must be true!

loobyloo1234 · 30/04/2020 13:58

*We will be locked down until June 2025 with all stores closed and army delivered packages of gruel on a monthly basis. Any stepping outdoors will be met with an electric shock and the old Cones Hotline has been replaced by a Grass Up A Neighbour Who Smiled More Than Once A Day line.
Home school provision will be assessed by Ofsted and any house without an acre of garden and room for a pony will be automatically failed.
Clapping for the NHS will be compulsory at :33 minutes past every hour.

It's seriously some MNers wet dream.*

Grin So accurate

cantory · 30/04/2020 13:59

@notalwaysalondoner But some other countries have virtually eliminated it with cases in single figures.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/04/2020 13:59

Sadly those people will have to look for another job. Care homes seem to be desperate to recruit.

I remember thread a while ago where most posters said that they didn't want anyone currently unemployed to apply for work as carers because if they had wanted to be carers then they would have been anyway and many posters also said that they didn't want their relatives in need of care being looked after by carers who were only doing care work because they had been forced to do that.

cantory · 30/04/2020 14:00

@Mascotte then like to WHO please, because what I read does not say what you say it said.

Drivingdownthe101 · 30/04/2020 14:00

I think a lot of people will turn their nose up at these jobs at not being good enough for them

And even if they didn’t, there wouldn’t be enough care home jobs for the millions of unemployed 🤷🏻‍♀️

BigChocFrenzy · 30/04/2020 14:02

"I think we will/should be in lockdown until there is a vaccine unfortunately."

That's not possible, because of the economy and the need to pay the bills,
regardless of how well / badly MH fares

It is sensible to announce plans for the next 3 weeks, whether lockdown or relaxation,
but it would be completely unnecessary to commit - in advance - to lockdown beyond about mid May

The government are hopefully using the lockdown time to organise the infrastructure for mass testing, contact tracing and isolation of the infected

A phone App for the UK are likely to be only a useful supplement to this, even if the App works properly and is avaailable early enough to be of use

The UK should watch what happens in European countries who are starting to relax lockdown now

... and despite the desperation of the "Indefinite Lockdown" lobby to grab at any news to deny that relaxation can work,
countries like Germany, France, Austria have NOT so far seen an increase in cases over the last few days

  • it's too early anyway to see consequences of relaxation; it is next week that would show if indeed an upward trend has started
cantory · 30/04/2020 14:02

@ChardonnaysPetDragon I remember that thread and contributed. Because some of the people I have seen forced into care work I would not trust looking after my cat. We are not talking about capable personable people who just think care is beneath them.

Drivingdownthe101 · 30/04/2020 14:03

Exactly. If I applied for a job as a carer, it would be because I was desperate for money. I have no desire to be a carer, I never have had any desire to be a carer, and I would be absolutely awful at it.
Now if the job was something like data entry, it wouldn’t matter particularly that I had no desire to do it. But to be a carer you have to want to do it. I certainly wouldn’t want my grandmother being cared for by someone who was just doing it because they have been made redundant and need the money.

cantory · 30/04/2020 14:03

The choice is not between an indefinite lock down and lets all get back to normal asap.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/04/2020 14:04

Then why do you suggest that the recently unemployed apply for jobs in care then?

GabsAlot · 30/04/2020 14:05

germany have seen an increase though it was mentioned yesterday by raab

TiddlestheCat · 30/04/2020 14:06

I only read the DM for its crossword and its fascism.

GrimmsFairytales · 30/04/2020 14:06

Because some of the people I have seen forced into care work I would not trust looking after my cat.

I'm confused, as your previous post implied those people should get jobs as carers.

cantory · 30/04/2020 14:07

@Drivingdownthe101 People on universal credit have never been able to pick and choose if they are prepared to take a job or not. You want the rules to be different now?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/04/2020 14:08

Can I also recommend this guy's Twitter feed ... it's not a site I often use, but at least he offers a little positivity among all the gloom:

It did.

cantory · 30/04/2020 14:08

@GrimmsFairytales I am saying people now who have been capable of holding down jobs long term are probably perfectly capable of working in care. They just think it is beneath them.

lockedinfornow · 30/04/2020 14:08

@gabsalot
Because people are just getting fed up now. There is more to life than this virus.
I've started to see my boyfriend who doesn't live with me now (shock horror) it's just not bloody natural to be away from someone I love for this long and I'm done with it. I'm still staying clear of anyone else, not mixing with friends and other family but I decided my mental health was more important. Also social distancing at shops ect, I'm following the rules otherwise but I'm done not seeing him. Lock me up and throw away the key!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/04/2020 14:10

Oh ok, it's just that old style unemployed that are untrustworthy and incapable.
