Just seen on daily fail (sorry!) that Boris is going to announce that we will be lockdown until June at least.

Not sure if I can cope that long. 😩

Supposedly our schools here (jersey) will go back on 1 june.

But I doubt they will in reality.

I did also see that michael gove has suggested that island communities like ours have their lockdowns fully lifted so thy can see the effects once lifted....

I think unofficially they are relaxing things slightly with the opening of some takeaways and non essential shops- well basically B&Q

DIY and takeaways were always allowed to stay open.

Macd's closed because the staff manning the booths complained they were at risk.
B&Q stayed open to to the 'trade.

There has been no relaxing of anything, mixed messages perhaps.

Flyinggeese · 30/04/2020 13:21

rookiemere B&Q was always eligible to be open - right from the start the government stated that DIY shops were 'essential' - it was B&Q that took the decision to close for a while (presumably to sort out social distancing etc). So it's not anyone relaxing things - although it does look like it!

TinRoofRusty · 30/04/2020 13:22

The Dementors will be so pleased.

The80sweregreat · 30/04/2020 13:23

It has been mixed messages all round. A journalist said this last week and Priti Patel said no : it's been clear etc. I had to smile.

eeeyoresmiles · 30/04/2020 13:23

For example, i know nobody who has died of covid 19. I know 3 people who have died because of lockdown ( one heart attack who didn’t want to bother the NHS, 2 suicides). If that becomes the average experience, the 5 criteria become meaningless as full lockdown is then more damaging than the virus

Unfortunately, covid 19 seems to be causing some clot related heart attacks and strokes in patients who otherwise have barely any symptoms (although I'm not saying this is what happened to the person you know). It looks as though some heart attacks will be direct effects of the virus, not side effects of the lockdown. There was also a news story from NY paramedics saying they were going out to far more sudden deaths every day than they had ever done before.

@whatisforteamum maybe you need to use your imagination.

I'm wfh almost full time hours. I'm also trying to coordinate my kids' schoolwork- giving help and advice on subjects I know nothing about. My job is stressful & difficult, and I'm now doing it in the same room as my kids. We are very lucky- we have a garden.
Thousands of people do not. So- at home, 24/7 trying to work & keep kids schoolwork going, and nowhere for kids to let off steam.
Shopping takes longer- queuing for up to an hour outside, longer in store to keep social distance. Food is more expensive.
Can't visit family- some people usually use grandparents for childcare- all now impossible.

Thousands of people have lost their jobs, or run businesses which are now failing. People can't afford food or to pay their rent.
Family members are ill & dying.

And you can't see why people might find it difficult?

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/04/2020 13:24

@Sparklingbrook The black chess piece represents the dementors - posters who enjoy the drama and misery of all this; who think that anyone who isn't as miserable as them isn't 'doing lockdown properly' and who get their little kicks from posting (unsubstantiated) scare stories to make everyone else that little bit more unhappy.

They seem to think that if you're not doing your State Permitted Daily Exercise in the form of crawling round the block (no further!) on your knees, whilst thrashing yourself with a birch rod, wailing and ringing a bell to signify the end of the world, then you are personally murdering nurses, if not the entirety of the population.

poshme · 30/04/2020 13:25

@AldiAisleOfCrap
From gov website
The government expects that the scheme will not be used by many public sector organisations, as the majority of public sector employees are continuing to provide essential public services or contribute to the response to the coronavirus outbreak.
Where employers receive public funding for staff costs, and that funding is continuing, we expect employers to use that money to continue to pay staff in the usual fashion – and correspondingly not furlough them.

Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2020 13:26

Thanks @BrightYellowDaffodil so it’s a dig. I saw it on another thread but thought somebody had pressed it by accident. Grin

AlecTrevelyan006 · 30/04/2020 13:27

Quite a few businesses closed when they didn’t really have to because they felt under pressure from staff / customers / media

Now that the pressure is easing many are opening up again, albeit with slightly different operating procedures

My wife has just been unfurloughed from the garden centre where she works

Mascotte · 30/04/2020 13:29

This is a fucking nightmare. The consequences of this lockdown are going to be dire. It needs to be eased now.

Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2020 13:30

Chip shops and coffee shops (for takeaway) are starting to open back up around here. V mixed messages to ‘Stay at Home’ 🤷‍♀️

waterrat · 30/04/2020 13:31

@BrightYellowDaffodil thank you for that description! So true.

I came on to post just because the first page upset me - people saying 'well, tough this is it' 'like it or lump it' 'think of the war' !!

Well, firstly people in the war did go through a huge amount but they also were able to have a cup of tea with their neighbours, children played for hours outside in big gangs, music bars and pubs were open. So clearly in some ways they were better off.

More people have died of Covid than died in the bombing of London in WW2 - so there you go, we might be winning the suffering war hooray

Secondly - it is spiteful and nasty to just cut people off because they are worrid about locldown. The lockdown is having a cruel and horrible impact on the mental health of many people - in my view partiuclarly those with young children and teenagers.

Actually I don't feel I have to just 'put up with it' Im really angry with the govt who hve completely failed on test, track, trace - which they could have been doing from the first days.

We are under continuing lockdown because our govt has failed us - and it is the vulnerable who will suffer.

I also feel fairly furious to see bloody burger king open while my children can't even chat to a friend in the park or kick a ball about - despite the fact that children have almost NO chance of getting seriously ill and there is now strong evidnce they don't transmit it to adults.

This government is more interested in getting Mcdonalds open than ensuring the wellbeing of children and families and it's a disgrace.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/04/2020 13:31

Do people think they will be able to rush round seeing friends/family as they used to, once this lockdown is lifted? There will still be social distancing rules

peoplepleaser1 · 30/04/2020 13:32

I'm confused as to why @Chloemol and several other posters have said we will have to wait two weeks to find out if lockdown we'll be extended?

I'm sure the end of the most recent three week period is next Thursday 7th May? So one week away?

I realise that things won't necessarily change then- but that is the day in which some changes may officially be made is it not?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 30/04/2020 13:32

The next 3 week review is due Thursday 7 may - another 3 week extension takes us to the end of the month. I suspect the next announcement to be basically a continuation of the existing guidance with some ‘clarification’ about stuff people are allowed to do and possibly some positive words about lifting restrictions further come Monday 1 June if the overall situation continues to improve.

daisychain01 · 30/04/2020 13:32

I'll be OK if we stay locked down until June but I am able to wfh.

I can understand for those whose source of income is cut altogether or furloughed it is not a good prospect.

We all miss our families and friends, but quite frankly I talk to DM and family members and they're all safe and well, so that's a massive plus as far as I'm concerned. One step at a time, that's all we can do and this next phase of lock-down is just one of those steps.

We can only hope the talk of social bubbling has gone POP!!

2beautifulbabs · 30/04/2020 13:33

@howow
As I previously stated I don't care about the shops and pubs and restaurants re opening keep them shut for as long as possible.

As PP have mentioned they sadly can't protect us getting this virus those in low risk or high risk it's a fact they have also mentioned there may never be a vaccine to protect us.
I for one don't want to be in lockdown for any longer than what we have already been in or be strung along that they could have a vaccine within 18 months time sorry but no thanks I don't want to be holed up indoors for that length of time either.
The economy can't afford for people to be off work any longer than beginning of June.
Do you really think the government will be paying your mortgage or anyone else's for that matter when more people lose their jobs?

If more of us were allowed to see our families and friends and I don't mean packing out open spaces with our loved ones still confined to our own homes I can't see any harm.

Your at risk either way still going to the shop and getting the virus whether we stay in lockdown or not maybe the government can come up with a far better plan for those at high risk where you are the only ones to get priority of online shopping therefore you can continue living at home as said each to their own in choices neither is wrong

Xtinalee · 30/04/2020 13:34

Hope this is true. When lockdown is over it’ll start all over again. Unless they find treatments by then. Trying to be optimistic

cantory · 30/04/2020 13:35

@Puzzledandpissedoff Because the economy will recover.

PhilCornwall1 · 30/04/2020 13:35

Do people think they will be able to rush round seeing friends/family as they used to, once this lockdown is lifted? There will still be social distancing rules

Loads of people are doing this now (loads around where I live), people aren't going to wait for Boris and Co to say it's ok.

daisychain01 · 30/04/2020 13:35

Well, firstly people in the war did go through a huge amount but they also were able to have a cup of tea with their neighbours, children played for hours outside in big gangs, music bars and pubs were open. So clearly in some ways they were better off.

Yup absolutely, the thought of having your house bombed, was much better for knowing you could have a cup of tea and get down the pub.

Whataloadofshite · 30/04/2020 13:38

We all have to cope. That's how it is.
