Just seen on daily fail (sorry!) that Boris is going to announce that we will be lockdown until June at least.

Not sure if I can cope that long. 😩

I'd be surprised, frankly, if we lift it by the end of July.

The meeting to discuss lifting lockdown is not till 7th May so this pure speculation on the part of the DM, unless they’ve bugged 10 Downing Street!

Lockdown was never going to be lifted in one go, it was always going to be incremental. Spain, Italy, etc are only just starting to lift their restrictions now and they lockdown before we did.

I certainly wouldnt be rushing into a routine nhs appt.
article in DM about a dc whose dad had a f2f appt re cancer think he had 70% chance of survival - was dead of covid in 15d. Received shielding letter 9 days after death.

There are 1-2k confirmed cases of key workers a day! At the moment. And thats only confirmed.

Pretty sure the Daily Mail wrote that the lockdown was over this week too in yesterday's article.

So YABU to believe anything in there, they can write everything and the complete opposite on the same page!

We have one of the least strict lockdowns ever, so even if that was true, it would be highly sensible. Unfortunately, the DM is great for entertainment ,but totally unreliable for facts.

I’ll be surprised if it’s lifted before the end of August.

Any advance on that?

I don’t think anyone thought it would be lifted before June. Who knows if it will be lifted then even.

Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2020 11:34

Just assume it’s forever then if it’s lifted it will be a lovely surprise?

June is to be expected. They’ve extended the furlough scheme until then, and they’re hardly going to all that economic cost just for people to traipse about as normal.

Wandering

This does seem wiser on many counts, partly to do with the hugely higher risk of death found in those over 50/over 60 and also because younger people are impacted much more by the lockdown in terms of jobs, childcare, economics and so on....

Really? Myself and DP are just over/just under 50 and have 3 school age dependent children. We still need to go to work to feed our children and pay our mortgage and bills. In fact we have exactly the same bills and commitments as someone in, say, their 30's. Huge sweeping generalisation on your part about 'older people'...

cantory · 30/04/2020 11:38

I hope they do put measures in place for people who need treatment such as for cancer.
You can ask to be furloughed for childcare reasons. Anyone struggling wfh with children should consider asking for this.
It is tough, but I don't want what we have already went through ti be for nothing, which it will if lock down is lifted too soon.
And new treatments are being tried. So if we can keep infection rates low, even those people who do get it later will be more likely to survive.

CheshireCats well yes and also what about all those over 50's that haven't actually stopped going out to work - will they suddenly be told they can't go anymore

Report
cantory · 30/04/2020 11:40

@CheshireCats I suspect they are thinking of better off older working people who have mortgages paid off. They are less at risk financially. As are those still paying a mortgage but with equity in the property. Those still paying rent are not.

Most over 50s work.

They'll reopen schools in June only to shut them 6 weeks later for the summer break. Obviously parents will be expected to go back to work, with businesses and schools doing whatever they can to support social distancing. Pubs, cinemas etc will remain closed to support social distancing. Shielding will continue.

This will take some organisation so will probably need to be announced next week.

There is at least another 2 weeks until lockdown is up for review anyway - Im expecting them to largely extend it until the end of what would have been half term week which happens to be end of May.

But I do think a lot of businesses will quietly reopen in the meantime if they are able to demonstrate social distancing - lots of Housebuilder start back next week and I don't see how B&Q and Homebase can get away with being open but garden centres and even some large retail units eg Hobbycraft, Homesense or even Next can't.

I think maybe October, because then we could avoid the second peak in September. But lockdown over October half term. Honestly.....who knows? I can only assume that we have a LOT of money And that those wanting huge extensions to lockdown have a steady income and no children to educate and keep mentally healthy.

@Redolent Yes when they extended the furlough scheme till June I knew things would not get a lot more relaxed before then.
In terms of over 50s, and I am 50, it is better to be alive. We are at increased risk.

@GrimmsFairytales my friend too. We talk daily but it's not helping the sheer relentless of coping on her own every day.

At any other time I'd have her kids, or we'd meet in the park.

It's because of these situations I want lock down over and the kids back to school.

@ivfgottostaypositive DIY stores were always allowed to stay open. They were never ordered to close.

I fucking hate it it's hell each day is hell
The government have taken away our freedom and continue to do so next we will be told when we can breathe and what we should be wearing next.

Allow us to chose if we aren't in the high risk categories allow us the choice again to see family and friends.

I don't give a shit about the shops pubs restaurants.

I'm just fed up of not seeing my family and friends each day is depressing reading in the papers kids being killed domestic violence increase suicides I guess those people don't matter so long as the government are having a power trip

It is not a nice thought, in fact it is terrifying to think it will last that long
@LittleLeaps you do realise that for those shielding it’s till the end of June - for now but will be extended possibly until Autumn next year. Try to have a little perspective.

It reminds me of that immediate postnatal period when every day is slow and gruelling and relief seems like it’ll never come.

@HouseTornado

Sorry to hear that your fiend is also going through something similar. Sad It's so frustrating to not be able to help. Like you I would happily take the kids for a few hours, but now that option has been removed and I'm just left listening to her struggles.

It’s going to last forever and no one will ever see loved ones again. Soon they will stop us buying goodies so we are as miserable as fuck too....That’s what mumsnet wants isn’t it really?
