Seen a report that uk government are going to put in a restriction that anyone being they Uk or foreign flying into uk will have to go into 2 week quarantine. So by all epmeans fly off on your holiday to Spain, be in lockdown there in hotel for 2 weeks and fly back to be in quarantine here for 2 weeks!

Flights not being stopped early enough, air travel should haven been in strict measures from January, nav got it into this situation. I hope this is one measure the UK hovernment do implement asap.

I'm not saying this lightly had major foreign holiday booked for late June that i may or may not get my money back on.

The world needs to change and it starts with stricter tighter control a on air travel.

Boireannachlaidir · 26/04/2020 09:00

I don't see a return to cheap air travel as good news for us or the planet and I agree with PP that this is partly why we're in this sorry state.

But of course people will do what they like if it's on offer.

TruffleShuffles · 26/04/2020 09:26

Surely the only reason they are putting these flights on is for cash flow into the business. They will use the money of people stupid enough to book these flights to refund the people whose flights have been cancelled up to this point.

Everything I’ve read coming out of Spain in the last week says they will hopefully open to tourists in August and Brits will most definitely not be amongst the first nationalities allowed in. They suggested we may not be allowed in till nearer December. They are only just allowing children to leave there own homes, they won’t let tourists into the country in the coming weeks.

schnubbins · 26/04/2020 09:57

Would the British people want a flood of Chinese tourists coming in from Wuhan or plane loads of folk from Northern Italy at the moment or in two months time.Could the NHS cope if all those then got sick while on holiday or the result of higher of a higher infection rate. I doubt it.
The same applies to those living in Spain ,France or Italy .

donquixotedelamancha · 26/04/2020 10:06

Would the British people want a flood of Chinese tourists coming in from Wuhan

At the moment that's almost the safest cohort you could pick; of course China would isolate them when they returned.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/04/2020 10:34

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross
What on earth

According to the data, Belgium has the highest Covid-19 mortality rate per capita. The UK is currently fifth, behind Belgium, Spain, Italy and France.

paininthepoinsettia · 26/04/2020 10:43

Well that depends on where you are going. For instance, if you are heading to somewhere like Florida, it’s likely that although there may be some restrictions, many tourist areas, beaches, activities are looking to open by June. (Some are opening sooner)

I was referring to Spain (as per OP) as I know the situation there as DM lives there.

Yes I'm sure that some places will be open but I doubt that the activities will resume as normal for many months. Think social distancing on beaches, theme parks etc.

BillieEilish · 26/04/2020 10:54

No way beaches will be open to tourists. The police are patrolling them. I don't know if Benidorm will let Brits back. I think the Spanish want to reclaim their beautiful coast.

My DD and I went for our first walk in 6 weeks this morning.

My DH got stuck in our flat on the beach after playing tennis the evening of lockdown and has not been allowed to travel home 1km since.

I really don't think people on UK lockdown understand this lockdown.

The idea of coming on holiday next month or anytime this summer is laughable.

Adults MAY be allowed to do exercise for up to an hour from next weekend if numbers keep falling.

Nobody can travel anywhere without a valid reason by car. People from outside each province and people within that province within the country CANNOT TRAVEL ANYWHERE.

BackInTime · 26/04/2020 11:15

Some places may have no choice but to reopen - thinking of, say, the Greek "fly and flop" islands. What other economy is there? It might not be sensible but tourism is the only thing putting food on a lot of people's tables.

Greece has one of the earliest lockdowns, stricter than the UK and very successful. Will the Greek people want to risk undoing this? There will be a lot of tough decisions to be made in the months ahead .

Rhubardandcustard · 26/04/2020 12:16

Belgium has the highest rate per capita because emir is including deaths in care homes and elsewhere from coronavirus. Other countries, including the UK are not including them in their figures, if they were we would be one of the top with deaths per capita.

notimagain · 26/04/2020 12:17

I really don't think people on UK lockdown understand this lockdown.

I agree - We're currently suffering the constraints of the French lockdown and the UK version is a "lockdown lite" in comparison.

Cervois · 26/04/2020 12:45

@elQuintoConyo

ALL the way through? So pleased my Aunties death made you laugh!

nakedavengerreturns · 26/04/2020 13:09

In NZ we are down to single figures in cases per day. All from two care homes. Potentially the virus will be eradicated in a week or so

Despite that there is talk of only having flights between Australia and NZ for at least the next year and only opening that when Aus has zero cases.

I doubt very very much that Europe will suddenly reopen in a month with France and Spain currently in super lockdown and the UK with mind boggling numbers of deaths.

I'd wager they are doing it to get some cash flow. They can hope to keep the business afloat with some bookings over the next month or so whether or not they actually do fly. Then when the time comes they will issue you with a credit note.

Legoandloldolls · 26/04/2020 13:13

Does anyone have a link to say that Spain is shut for sure until August? I want my refund from TUI

TheCanterburyWhales · 26/04/2020 13:21

No Italian, northern or southern would dream of setting foot in the UK anytime soon Schnubbins, after looking on with horror at the pig's ear the govt have made of managing the crisis.

anjiat · 26/04/2020 13:23

The person who thinks they'll be quarantining for 2 weeks WITH their in-laws?

Has the U.K. government not properly explained quarantine and lockdown to their citizens?

MyBlueMoonbeam · 26/04/2020 13:27

@twinnywinny14
Exactly - I'd love to be able to fly from Ireland to the UK & see friends and family asap but we have to be realistic.

@DBML

I'm not crushing your hopes the virus is I'm afraid.

Piggywaspushed · 26/04/2020 13:31

Just to miss pont of thread but to answer some posters, I have heard of Wizz Air. Flew to Krakow with them
They have excellent reviews so I picked them over Ryan Air. They were very good.

But I agree this is a naked attempt to blackmail consumers into not being able to claim refunds.

3luckystars · 26/04/2020 13:37

I cant see this happening.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 26/04/2020 13:40

I should have been in Portugal as we speak - fighting with Ryanair to get my flights refunded 🙄

Tonemeth · 26/04/2020 13:41

Oh anjiat dont you go being an intellectual. It was just a wish so apparently it didnt need to make sense Wink

schnubbins · 26/04/2020 13:45

@TheCanterburyWhales .I am pretty sure that no Northern Italian would want to go anywhere near the UK for the next while.I am using it as a comparison .Nobody in the UK wants to import any cases anymore than Italy or Spain do after the harsh and long quarantine they have been through.We go to Italy every year on holidays but I know that that will not be happening this year.

Peridot1 · 26/04/2020 14:13

I agree that Wizz Air are potentially targeting Eastern European workers coming here for work. Ryanair just flew a plane load of Bulgarians into Dublin for work on fruit farms. There has been uproar but apparently they are isolating and all necessary ore are being taken. Romanians have already flown in to UK for similar and more will come and be needed this summer. Not enough people here are willing to work on farms so they need to be flown in.

Completely agree that not many countries will want anyone from the UK flying in any time soon. We are due to fly to Greece in July. The resort was due to open 1 April but the government decreed that they couldn’t open til 1 May. As far as I know they are opening then. However I can’t see them welcoming British tourists this summer.

I’m also supposed to be going to Australia at the end of October. Pretty sure that won’t be happening. Will have to wait till nearer the time to see what will happen and change flights to next year if possible.

DBML · 26/04/2020 14:52

@MyBlueMoonbeam

But my point is that as you don’t know for sure that holidays won’t go ahead by the end of the year, telling people the 100% won’t be is not right.

It’s ok to say ‘I’m not sure they’ll go ahead’ or ‘In my opinion they won’t go ahead’...but people saying you’re deluded if you think....is not ok.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 26/04/2020 15:27

@DBML

Not OK to tell people how to phrase their posts either 😏 freedom of expression - unless it breaks guidelines 🤷‍♀️
