Some positive news today!

OP posts:

The UK government's advice will dictate when we can travel again not a Hungarian airline. I wouldn't be wanting to go on a flight with perhaps untested passengers and anyway will the Spanish authorities be letting tourists into their Country in May I very much doubt it.

chocolatviennois · 25/04/2020 17:51

@drivingdownthe101 - my point is that the beginning of May is too early for international flights to resume unless movement around the UK is permitted at the same time. It would be unfair for people to visit family overseas before people can visit family in this country.

Like you I am hoping to make a trip abroad later in the year but that is not what this thread is about. The OP was talking about an airline starting flights in a weeks time while the UK is in lockdown.

Tonemeth · 25/04/2020 17:51

I missed the bit where I called myself an intellectual Wink

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 17:52

Not sure what people are so excited about. The virus is still there whether wizz air fly or not.

I see staff will wear masks but passengers will all stilll be breathing on each other.

redandwhite1 · 25/04/2020 17:52

My flight to spain on May 23rd has been cancelled so I find this very unlikely

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/04/2020 17:52

You didn’t, I did Smile

notimagain · 25/04/2020 17:58

The UK government's advice will dictate when we can travel again not a Hungarian airline

The Wizz Air UK MD has states (according to the Mirror article)

"...restart selected Luton flights to provide an essential service to passengers who need to travel" (my emphasis)

FWIW in the context of travel by air the UK Government hasn't stopped flights and if you can demonstrate a "need" e.g; essential worker and have appropriate paperwork for the overseas end of the flight you can travel..

I wonder if that is the sort of traveller who Wizz Air are pitching this at, rather than people needing to catch up with family overseas.

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/04/2020 18:01

It's worth bearing in mind foreign tourist boards and possibly their governments (depending how reliant their economy is on tourism) will be quicker to embrace tourists from abroad than the locals. It will be like the rural locals here when people turned up from the cities. Even if you are allowed in you won't be getting a friendly reception. We are, as PP say, the sick man of Europe. In fact we're actually one of the worse affected in the world. It doesn't make us very attractive visitors.

ToffeeYoghurt · 25/04/2020 18:04

Agree about Wizz (Whizz?) air. I remember I couldn't stop giggling when a friend flew with them a few years ago. Grin

This ^^

Namechangervaver · 25/04/2020 18:18

Are you all on glue?

And this ^^

BackInTime · 25/04/2020 18:30

I'm pretty certain Spain and Portugal, who have had much stricter lockdown measures will not want the risk of lots of British tourists bringing further infections into their countries.

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/04/2020 18:35

Spain currently has the most active infections of any country in Europe (as far as we can tell, due to different testing regimes), so of course they won’t be allowing tourism any time soon.

Babbas · 25/04/2020 18:53

Turkish airlines are predicting routes will reopen by the end of June. Wishful thinking on their part but some countries are really keen to revive tourism so might well try and have a phased opening.

Goatymcgoaty · 25/04/2020 19:07

Travel insurance mostly not covering covid. Would you be prepared to go without insurance?

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 19:17

Travel insurance is a good point.

Lots of gung ho flyers but insurers may not cover.

Parker231 · 25/04/2020 19:31

I can’t see any other countries wanting anyone from the UK to travel to their country until the virus is under the control here. We don’t know yet what any further lockdown or social distancing will look like yet.

buttermilkwaffles · 25/04/2020 19:42

"Yolanda Díaz, Spain’s employment minister, has suggested tourism, leisure and cultural activities will not resume until towards the end of the year."

Not sure I fancy being in a remote Turkish hospital in a Pandemic... but hey that's me. Confused

flutterby31 · 25/04/2020 20:24

We've cancelled our Majorca holiday in July.
Yes we've lost our deposit but hey, we're not going to be stuck in a metal tube with 200 people, face quarantine and/or unmanageable social distancing in an all inclusive resort. I'm delighted to not be going.

Schuyler · 25/04/2020 20:42

I’m not in the “OMG we’re all going to die!!!!” category but neither do I consider it positive news. Positive news would be drastic decrease in deaths and new daily infections or a release on restrictions so more people can return to employment.

I highly doubt these flights will accept holiday makers and yes, visiting family is a holiday. Countries like Spain and France did a much harsher and quicker lockdown, not sure how they’ll feel about us Brits arriving with our germs!!

BillieEilish · 25/04/2020 20:55

I'm in lockdown in Spain. Very strict proper lockdown. For 6 weeks. NOT UK 'lockdown'.

I am interested on how you plan to get from the airport when I can't go to the local park/garden without risking 1,000 euro fine or sticking out like a sore thumb on the deserted streets.

Also, if I can't stay with relatives here, living 5 minutes away, how on earth is anyone thinking they can stay with relatives having just turned up from England?

Also, the Brits behaved so, so appallingly when lockdown happened here, you really WILL NOT be welcomed back any time soon.

My DD is not going back to school before September, this has been confirmed.

Why do you think you can turn up here and do things citizens have no right/chance of doing? Why do you think that would be accepted? Hmm

Next month? Good news? Crazy.

elQuintoConyo · 25/04/2020 22:34

I'm laughing all the way through this thread! Spain will not let you in for MONTHS Hmm

Slattery · 25/04/2020 22:39

You’re all mad!

3rdNamechange · 25/04/2020 22:43

Spain won't let you in , everything is closed anyway so what on earth would be the point ?
