I'm sure the locals will give a very warm welcome to tourists arriving from the country with the highest Covid death rate.

Um - no-one at any point has mentioned either being from Belgium or travelling from Belgium on this thread, so not sure what you're talking about here...

Itisasecret · 25/04/2020 23:11

Not to mention the government are finally considering quarantining all returning passengers or visitors. The sheer belief that anyone will be waltzing in and out of Spain on holiday is ludicrous. They won’t let you in and you won’t get back without quarantine.

BethBlue0770 · 25/04/2020 23:31

I'm so worried about this. My ex partner (my LOs father) was due to go on a family holiday with our LO during lockdown, they've emailed them to give them the chance to rebook this year and they are booking to go in Summer. I wouldnt dream of going abroad until there is a vaccine or evidence that reoccurances of a lockdown are unlikely but I'm being treated as though my concerns are just an over reaction and everything all over the world will be just fine and dandy by summer...surely its madness to let a small child be put at risk of being quarantined in a foreign country without her mum (let alone all the other potential health concerns surrounding it) or is it just me?

SouthsideOwl · 25/04/2020 23:54

@pineappledanish

How is this in anyway good news ffs!

Because some of us have to pay our mortgage, ffs? Because other countries which are a few weeks ahead of us have reached the stage of being ready to start travel again ffs? because the constant WE'RE ALLL GOING TO DIE rhetoric is getting boring, ffs? hmm

This made me laugh thank you. I think FFS has become the new abbreviation lame outrage apron flap of choice

donquixotedelamancha · 26/04/2020 00:14

Well, that seems a reassuring and reliable airline. From their website:

airports throughout Wizz Air's network will be performing medical screening of passengers, therefore it is possible you may be subjected to such a check upon arrival at your destination airport.

Wizz Air shall not be obliged to pay the compensation if the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances

Wizz Air does not offer a refund when the trip is voluntarily cancelled by the passenger.

It is the traveller’s responsibility to verify travel restrictions in a given country with the local authorities and ensure their admissibility to enter/exit a given country. Please also make sure your health condition allows you to travel and will not have an effect on other passengers.

I received a notification that I was a passenger on a flight with a confirmed coronavirus case. What should I do?
Please contact your local health authority immediately and follow any guidance that is given.

My impression is that Wizz are happy to take people's money and either dump them in the arrival airport or just tell them to fuck off if they realise and try to cancel. They probably figure it's cheaper to fly the planes empty than refund everyone.

They have already had confirmed cases on flights and the help they provided is to email people's travel agents after the event.

Next month? Good news? Crazy. Yeah, that.

" no-one at any point has mentioned either being from Belgium or travelling from Belgium on this thread, so not sure what you're talking about here..."

Belgium includes all care home deaths and all deaths at home from COVID

The FT and the Times have calculated that if the UK just included care home deaths we'd be over 40,000

No idea how many of those COVID victims turning blue died at home

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2020 01:05

"Because other countries which are a few weeks ahead of us have reached the stage of being ready to start travel again ffs?"

NO European country is planning to let its citizens fly anywhere on holiday

... because they'd bring infection back with them

Noone will want anyone else's tourists either, until this crisis is over

A lot of airlines around the world may go bust, because only essential workers and goods are being carried,
or countries evacuating their citizens back home

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2020 01:07

I live in Germany and we've heard we shouldn't expect to fly anywhere this year

DBML · 26/04/2020 01:48

As soon as flights started taking off again, people will be on them.

If flights don’t take off for a while, then people won’t be on them.

This is one of those threads where no ones knows what will happen.

I am hopeful we’ll have our summer holiday. I have the correct insurance and if we can go we will. If we can’t, I’ll rebook for as soon is possible. No issues.

I don’t see what the argument is, just because some people hope for travel to resume. If they want to be positive, let them. 🤷‍♀️

Namechangervaver · 26/04/2020 01:53

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross
What on earth

paininthepoinsettia · 26/04/2020 02:12

There is no way normal 'holiday' activities will have resumed by then, so even if the airline are flying (and remember it's cheaper for them to fly than cancel) it won't be much of a holiday. I say that as someone who was very confident to still be going on my June holiday but I have wised up now.

Turkish airlines are predicting routes will reopen by the end of June. Wishful thinking on their part but some countries are really keen to revive tourism so might well try and have a phased opening

Turkey's tourism minister has said they will do a staggered entry, with Russia and Eastern Europe first and Brits last. We might not be allowed in this summer at all anywhere.

BenjiB · 26/04/2020 02:25

Maybe theyll get testing sorted and test everyone Before they leave or enter the country!

MyBlueMoonbeam · 26/04/2020 02:29

No one is going anywhere until next year - if you think otherwise then yes you are on glue 🙄

DBML · 26/04/2020 04:35

Well that depends on where you are going. For instance, if you are heading to somewhere like Florida, it’s likely that although there may be some restrictions, many tourist areas, beaches, activities are looking to open by June. (Some are opening sooner).
It may be that initially this is only to domestic travellers, but by the end of the year (and particularly by the mid to end of August when Florida children go back to school) it could be that international tourists could be in a position to enjoy the wide range of tourist destinations, if they are indeed able to get there.

I would argue that IF by any chance I got to go on my Florida keys holiday where we intend to go diving with our own equipment and boat; canoeing; and on nature walks, we still could have a pretty amazing vacation.

DBML · 26/04/2020 04:39

You try to crush other people’s hopes, when actually you do not know this at all. You speculate that holidays will not go ahead until 2021, which may or may not be correct. And now you will look silly if by any chance they do go ahead before the end of the year.

Again, it could be argued that there if by the end of May/June far fewer people are contracting Covid-19 and dying from it, there is little difference between travelling in September 2020 for instance and January 2021. We aren’t going to have a vaccine (or a miracle) between those dates, so we’ll still be living (and travelling) with the virus.

DerbyshireGirly · 26/04/2020 07:01

Some places may have no choice but to reopen - thinking of, say, the Greek "fly and flop" islands. What other economy is there? It might not be sensible but tourism is the only thing putting food on a lot of people's tables.

twinnywinny14 · 26/04/2020 07:11

@Iamclearlyamug we are all desperate to see family, mine only live 60 miles away but it’s unlikely to happen in May tbh

twinnywinny14 · 26/04/2020 07:14

@MyBlueMoonbeam could be right. We have been told some lockdown measures will be in place for the rest of the year this will be the same in other countries. I really don’t see how international travel is going to be up and running. @DBML no one is looking silly in this for being wrong, everyone is entitled to their opinion and tbh @MyBlueMoombeam has a fairly sensible point

user1495884620 · 26/04/2020 07:50

Wizz Air are a Hungarian budget airline. I suepect that passenger demographic is weighted towards moving EU (seasonal) workers around which will influence when they recommence and will be earlier than airlines like Jet2 which primarily target the tourist market.

notimagain · 26/04/2020 07:59

user149..etc...

I'm not sure of their passenger demographic through the likes of Luton but what you say makes sense to me.

As I mentioned upthread I thought it was significant that Wizz Air UK MD used of the word "need" in the context of reasons for people travelling, rather than "want".

user1495884620 · 26/04/2020 08:17

I've just found a list of the destinations being re-opened. Eight out of fifteen are in Romania. Given that Romania seems to be providing the current wave of cheap, migrant EU labour, I am even more convinced that they are targeting the migrant labour market, which will need to be opened up to ensure food production and to get economies back into motion.

Iamclearlyamug · 26/04/2020 08:24

@twinnywinny14 oh I completely appreciate that it won't be in May or even June. I just can't stand the people who say it's selfish to want to travel as soon as possible - seeing my fiance isn't a holiday, it's my life! I could understand being called selfish if I wanted to go clubbing and get smashed like most brits abroad (It's really no wonder we have a terrible reputation abroad, it's deserved) but frankly I'd happily never to leave my hotel room (partner runs a hotel which isn't open for holidaymakers as it stands so there'd be very little risk)

rookiemere · 26/04/2020 08:26

Ryanair is also running flights that people can't get on, so currently running a service to Dublin from UK.

Means that when I don't go in June won't get a penny back as flight running and below insurance excess - not that insurance that is also meant to cover covid-19 that I specifically paid the extra for seems to want to pay out for anything. Oh and the bloody concert still hasn't been cancelled so won't get any money back for that either until it does.

It's a ruse so that people lose their money - can't blame them I suppose as alternative is they go bankrupt. You'd have go be a bit keen to book a flight for June though.

HolidayLetter · 26/04/2020 08:29

I predict the U.K. will be a big tourist hotspot over summer/autumn!

God, I hope so.

rooarsome · 26/04/2020 08:34

I had a holiday booked to Spain for June (booked it last year). If they start flying again I hope I can still get my refund as I have absolutely no intention of going there right now!
