Why? Why oh why are people still coming here on holiday?

Devon. We have seen caravans and motorhomes and people obviously on holiday (canoe and suitcases etc on car roof, all that stuff; it's bloody obvious), bikes loaded with camping stuff....

We live 20 miles from the beach and none of us have seen a wave for weeks. DH spends half the day complaining because he can't go to the beach in this lovely weather as he normally does.

Thank goodness the market is not on, or we'd be over-run. Really worried as both dd and I are vulnerable (not extremely vulnerable) and dh freaks out every time he has to go out as our Designated Shopper that he'll bring it home to us.

Why are people such arseholes?

We're going to need road blocks!

Just so selfish. I was meant to be visiting my dd & digd this weekend in another part of the country but I wouldn't dream of breaking the lockdown.

SpokeTooSoon · 09/04/2020 22:16

So to you I say replace Devon with the UK because we are an island and Devon is not. It is too late by far to protect you and Devon alone. You need to think of the country as a whole and be less selfish

Hear bloody here

corabel · 09/04/2020 22:17

If you're at home OP how have you seen all these people?

SpokeTooSoon · 09/04/2020 22:17

Thousands were being allowed to pour into London via Heathrow and the channel tunnel for weeks before lockdown. Multiple flights a day from Milan and elsewhere. People landing and in and spreading out through the capital city. Are we in London allowed to be so precious?

Becca19962014 · 09/04/2020 22:22

Do you have only one hospital for at least two hours each way in London? No. That's the situation here. You've no idea how hard rural living is regarding NHS care. People here are being told to expect to die because there are no beds anywhere in my county now with so few beds and those elsewhere in the healthboard are struggling as well.

Becca19962014 · 09/04/2020 22:23

I live in on one of two roads into the rural place I live in.
I can easily see tourists arriving. I don't need to go outside.

StarryGazeyEyes · 09/04/2020 22:24

I have to say in fairness, I can see 4 houses from mine (Cornwall). Two are holiday homes and neither are occupied - I will smile a lot more sweetly at the owners when this is over than I maybe did previously (unless they come down tomorrow of course).

andhessixfeetten · 09/04/2020 22:25

I absolutely Love this one:

“a very basic property that's been in the family for 90 years, along with some lovely woodland which has been in the family well over 150 years”

For this alone I say classics

MamaBearLockdown · 09/04/2020 22:26

There's an easy solution, issue proper fines and advertise the amount. When people will have to start paying next to a ground because they ignore they lockdown, they will take it a bit more seriously.

If people wanted to reach their HOME, holiday or primary, they had plenty of warning to do so. Fair enough to be there when the lockdown started, but the time has pass.

HighNetGirth · 09/04/2020 22:27

Fair enough, gnomeisland.

And I really hope the epidemic doesn’t reach you. Scary times.

Daisy12Maisie · 09/04/2020 22:31

I was meant to be going to Leicester to stay in a hotel and take my boys to the space centre. Obviously we are not going. Hotel non refundable. Tough. No big deal.
As someone else said the coronavirus is costing most people financially. I'm a landlord so it's a nightmare with people being unable to pay. I'll take mortgage holidays but will have to pay that money back whereas I will never get the missed rent back.
If someone loses a holiday they have saved all year for its just tough at the moment.
Police are giving out fines but obviously there is never going to be anywhere near enough police to do that 24/7 along with everything else

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 09/04/2020 22:36

Report them.

Note their reg, take a pic of their location and report the selfish fuckers to the police.

TiddyTid · 09/04/2020 22:40

Simple. Selfish cunts

goose1964 · 09/04/2020 22:40

Avon and Somerset police announced they'll be sending people back if they don't have a good reason to be there.

MamaBearLockdown · 09/04/2020 22:41

Note their reg, take a pic of their location and report the selfish fuckers to the police.

and.. what?

emmcan · 09/04/2020 22:48

@goose1964 Send them back. Send them back to where they came from. Are you a relative of Enoch, perchance?

Sweetpea84 · 09/04/2020 22:51

Spoketosoon your comment makes total sense how many people have come in and out London making it worse here? I’m in London and feeling lots of people are being very volatile towards us. Most people here aren’t trying to flee to Devon etc we’re staying put and rightly so.Try and be kind as us Londoners etc will need holidays in the future and people don’t forget.

Iwantacookie · 09/04/2020 22:53

its mutated it's now caravanirus

Grin can see Jeremy Clarkson using that one.

PickAChew · 09/04/2020 22:54

I'm grateful that the tourists are Miraculously not flocking into Durham. Even Google maps says it's closed.

turquoisedoor · 09/04/2020 22:59

I expect it's the same reason why, weeks ago, people continued to go on holiday to infected countries and then flew back to the UK - possibly infecting millions of city dwellers as they travelled through the airports and onto public transport. Unfortunately the world is full of selfish or stupid people. On the plus side for rural areas, there's widespread outrage over non essential travel. That didn't happen with non essential travel to and through cities, which are suffering badly as a consequence.

Echobelly · 09/04/2020 23:03

I think police need to be checking IDs of everyone in motor homes etc and sending them home/fining them or something if they're more than a certain number of miles from home address (certainly no one should be more than 50 miles from home at the very least).

WomanIsTaken · 09/04/2020 23:13

The proprietors of my favourite coastal path campsite are putting daily notices on FB pleading with people not to turn up "on the off-chance", as they will be turned away. She told me they've had so many people ask if they can "just pop down" as it is very secluded and off the beaten track. So dumb.

Gilead · 09/04/2020 23:18

PickAChew there were people picnicking not too far away yesterday!

yearinyearout · 09/04/2020 23:19

@PoppliosBubble can't you report the second home owners?

Gilead · 09/04/2020 23:20

Oh, whilst we’re on visitors why the hell are we still getting flights from Italy and Spain?
