Why? Why oh why are people still coming here on holiday?

Jux · 09/04/2020 18:45

Devon. We have seen caravans and motorhomes and people obviously on holiday (canoe and suitcases etc on car roof, all that stuff; it's bloody obvious), bikes loaded with camping stuff....

We live 20 miles from the beach and none of us have seen a wave for weeks. DH spends half the day complaining because he can't go to the beach in this lovely weather as he normally does.

Thank goodness the market is not on, or we'd be over-run. Really worried as both dd and I are vulnerable (not extremely vulnerable) and dh freaks out every time he has to go out as our Designated Shopper that he'll bring it home to us.

Why are people such arseholes?

We're going to need road blocks!

XingMing I agree. I hope he makes a good recovery.

ChilliMayo · 12/04/2020 16:11

PM lives above No 11, the chancellor lives above No 10. This was changed in 2007 when the Blairs moved in as the No 10 flat was too small for them and their dc.

corabel · 12/04/2020 16:12

Xingming I agree too. We need leadership at this time and it's in everyone's interests that the PM recovers in the best way possible.

NKFell · 12/04/2020 16:15

Yes I have no problem with him going to recuperate. I wouldn’t have been happy if he’d abandoned No. 11 before he was ill...if you know what I mean.

XingMing · 12/04/2020 19:57

He didn't NKFell. So relax for a week or two while he gets better. After that, he's a fair target again. It's about health rather than politics. Whatever your polical skew, he won a big majority in December, so most of the voters nationally thought his policies were acceptable enough to trust him, at least short term. And then CV? It would have derailed every manifesto.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/04/2020 20:03

Just a guess, but I would think Chequers will be set up for secure partial wfh in a way the Camberwell flat won't be, and the flat above the shop in Downing St won't be suitable for recovering in.

Lordfrontpaw · 12/04/2020 22:16

If twitter is to be believed - he wasn’t ever ill at all Confused

JustStayHome · 12/04/2020 22:27

He looked rough before he went in and to be honest still looks rough !!

ErrolTheDragon · 12/04/2020 22:37

No 10 announce Johnson has been discharged from hospital and is going to Chequers to continue his recovery. Why is it OK for him to go to "his" country home?

Are there still civil servants working in Downing Street? It would be a bloody stupid idea for Johnson to go there at the moment I'd have thought.

Anyway ... I was talking to a friend who lives in the northern Lake District, he said it was quiet today so hopefully the message is getting through.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/04/2020 22:38

If twitter is to be believed - he wasn’t ever ill at all

It isn't.

Lordfrontpaw · 12/04/2020 22:46

ok I know - but the theories being put out there! Doctors refusing to sign official secrets act and not confirming the diagnosis then mysteriously being sent home, him being discharged at Easter... all Big Conspiracy apparently...

I find twitter absolutely fascinating though.

TheDrsDocMartens · 13/04/2020 08:22

I found it surprising that he was able to speak as well as he could. Friend wasn’t admitted to hospital (not bad enough apparently, given antibiotics and sent home) and still struggling to speak a full sentence 2weeks later.
I’m not saying johnson wasn’t ill but his video doesn’t help in convincing people he was that bad.

Jux · 13/04/2020 13:24

He didn't look at all well, imo, but nothing like as bad as I expected. Mind you, he has a very strong constitution - you can tell that by looking - so likely to bounce back quickly. Still, he needs to take a decent amount of time off.

Do you think he'll be recuperating in the country with his dad? That would be my neck of the woods. He might be lynched while he's a bit under par. Best to stick with Chequers, Boris.

I wish Boris a speedy recovery wherever he chooses to recover, as I would anyone.

thisenglishlife · 13/04/2020 19:03

He was already at his holiday home before lockdown
He was at Downing Street, evidenced by photos and videos of him clapping near the door

helsbels100 · 29/04/2020 19:53

Please explain why I’m selfish ?

helsbels100 · 29/04/2020 20:08

I haven’t looked at the responses to my comments as I’m so horrified - I’d like to see what would happen in Cornwall if all second homes and rentals were removed. We have an 8 bed house - would house a family of 6 with the grandparents too comfortably - that would be 4 school places needed and 8 extra doctors spaces - I’m not being patronising - I’m being realistic ! We share the house between the family and all spend money in Restaurants etc when we are here - Cornwall would not survive if all rentals and second homes owned properties were occupied full time - I’m stuck in a 2 bedroom flat with a family of 5 as having building works to my main house - we aren’t complaining and we are offering to help neighbours in isolation all the time - that’s the community we live in - not the selfish hideous community Cornwall is turning out to be - made us all seriously rethink our choice of holiday destination - some utterly appalling comments on here - you should be ashamed of yourselves - all in this together ?? Except in Cornwall !

helsbels100 · 29/04/2020 20:20

Thank you - my parents are in their late 70’s and happened to go to Cornwall early March - nothing to do with covid - government advice started whilst they were there for the over 70’s - so they stayed put where they were - they’ve been subjected to abuse and people telling them to go home - god knows how these people got their email address but they have - they are beyond upset yet they have done nothing wrong / they are desperate to see their grandchildren- they are desperate to go to their main home but they can’t - the abuse they’ve received is shocking

YogaFaker · 29/04/2020 21:10

You know there are people in Devon and Cornwall “stuck in a two bedroom flat with a family of 5” who don’t have “a main house” nor a holiday house?

Mainly because you seem to own all the houses.

So you can have the world’s tiniest violin.

You blinkeredness is astounding. Can you actually hear yourself?

esjee · 29/04/2020 21:13

Tbh getting back to your 'main house' where you live could easily be considered essential. If they really wanted to go home, they would've.

liferips · 29/04/2020 21:41

I’m stuck in a 2 bedroom flat with a family of 5 as having building works to my main house - we aren’t complaining

Boo hoo magoo

liferips · 29/04/2020 21:42

Ofcourse they can go back to their main home and they should.

YogaFaker · 29/04/2020 21:45

Indeed.

And perhaps use the time under lockdown to reflect on the effect of second home owners on local housing markets ...

itbemay1 · 29/04/2020 21:48

I've got an air b&b booked very near you OP it's for early June, they won't refund me (yet) but there's no way we'll be going! It's unbelievable that people are actually doing this! Idiots.

helsbels100 · 30/04/2020 22:17

I’ve reflected and come to the conclusion some of you guys are absolutely nuts !!
The whole point of lockdown is you don’t move from where you currently are to stop the spread of infection??!!
Turning this into a bitter row about second home owners is not the point
Sending abusive emails to people in their late seventies for doing what the government has asked them to do is just plain wrong
