Bristol...zero cases in 24 hours

Okay, I live in Bristol. I wish everyone in the whole of the UK and Ireland well, and I really want us all to combat this shitty virus as soon as possible.

Today, on the local news, they said that for the first time in (I can't remember exactly how long), that there had been literally zero new diagnosis of covid19 in our city!!! I have to admit I felt so happy 😁 like the lockdown has worked! People have followed the rules!

I feel I must emphasis that I don't take away from the pain and suffering, particularly in London and the East Midlands/Birmingham.....but is this not a sign of hope that lockdown has worked/is working ??

Also, I understand that many people are getting infected without needing hospital treatment.....but this must mean that for 24 hours not one person turned up at hospital needing treatment? We must be in/have passed the peak?!)

(Disclaimer: I am an extremely naive and optimistic person. On waiting list for assessment from ASD team. So please don't be mean).

But this is good isn't it??!

East Bristol here, it's really diverse!!
No one seems to care about social distancing judging by a very stressful trip to supermarket and the congestion on railway path.
PS I love Hull 💗

catsandlavender · 09/04/2020 14:32

@Smilethoyourheartisbreaking @LuckyMarmiteLover that’s my parents’ area and where I grew up, and they are very pleased with how quiet it all is. Good to hear you’re both experiencing the same thing!

PicsInRed · 09/04/2020 15:18

The Downs and Broadmead were busy last I checked. Not normal busy, but busy.

SophieGiroux · 09/04/2020 15:27

Brislington (Bristol) Tesco was quiet when I went the other day but was a horrible experience. More than 50% of customers not following the direction arrows up the aisles. People getting too close, coughing and massive families out shopping together (I thought only one was allowed). If I catch covid-19 it's a dead cert it'll be from that visit.

Well it's evrn more interesting considering we have an airport that got to venice and at least teneriffe.

And they flew the teneriffe hotel lot back out among a bristol flight.

Maybe we just didnt have many itsly skiiers?

I wonder with the BAME whether it could also be something like
Say if vit D did help avoid getting the ARDs its likely that people with darker skin get less vit D from the sun. (And potentially less likely to sunbathe etc).

Generally Things like obesity/smoking pollution levels might all make a difference to how many severe cases there are.
Our school closed on the thurs (a day early) as so many kids were already absent.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/04/2020 15:37

@PicsInRed - what's open in Broadmead - other than Boots, Tesco and Sainsburys?

naughtycat · 09/04/2020 22:50

Well this is great. About 30 minutes ago I started coughing. It's a dry painful cough and I'm a tiny bit breathless..... but I don't have a temperature at all. So Covid19 1/Bristol nil. Bastard virus 😡

BubblesBuddy · 09/04/2020 23:10

Yes, I coughed about 3 hours ago. Bastard chip went down the wrong way!

LuckyMarmiteLover · 09/04/2020 23:22

I’ve had a cough for 4 weeks but no other symptoms - probably just a cold. Although I’d love to have had it mildly already - and had been self isolating.

naughtycat · 10/04/2020 00:27

Broadmead is scary right now!!! I live by castle park, thought I would do my daily exercise as a walk through castle park and broadmead. Castle park was lovely but broadmead felt like a doomsday apocalypse.all shops closed (as they should be). But loads of people hanging around clearly up to no good. It was really tense, a lot of drugs and drug users, lots of dealers, and big gangs of homeless people (who don't want the hotels)....hanging around gangs based on their home eu contries ( I could say which particular country but I would only be accused of being racist Wink) broadmead is now dangerous....avoid!!!

naughtycat · 10/04/2020 00:39

I say avoid....but if your daily exercise can take you that way....it is very interesting. Emotionally really really sad! Some one (can't remember who!)....told my that the police are pretty much leaving the gangs etc to it in broadmead. Because every day people are not there. It's like a horrible little ghetto and the police are monitoring on cctv, but pretty much leaving them all to it .....currently it is a very tense and hostile place....go there out of curiosity, but don't take any valuables 😁

what's open in Broadmead - other than Boots, Tesco and Sainsburys?

Not a lot.
Hasn't stopped cyclists, skaters, sun bathers and general socialisers. Lot of people doing not much.

PicsInRed · 10/04/2020 12:46

There are some undesirables (mainly the intractably homeless and those with apparent mental health issues - nothing too alarming or threatening), but it's mostly just locals.

Rosieposy4 · 10/04/2020 12:51

Not the case about zero cases, relative is front line NHS in Bristol, at home with Covid 19 confirmed yesterday.

Frownette · 10/04/2020 12:55

Why don't they want hotels? I just texted friend in Bristol to ask if he'd been there

LuckyMarmiteLover · 10/04/2020 21:37

Apparently the downs was very busy yesterday.

EasterIssland · 10/04/2020 21:43

@SophieGiroux I keep thinking whether I should risk bris Tesco. Last time I went 3 weeks ago was overcrowded. I’ve started buying in Arthur David foods so I think I’m going to avoid Tesco as much as possible

Figgygal · 10/04/2020 21:46

I wonder why the police aren’t patrolling the downs it seems an obvious hotspot for congregating masses

exexpat · 10/04/2020 23:18

I have been on the Downs every two or three days for the last couple of weeks (dog walking). There are people around (walking, running, cycling, the occasional family with small children and a football), but the Downs has literally acres of space, and no one has to get anywhere near within breathing distance of each other. I have once or twice seen police vans in the area, but never seen any groups that looked like non-family gatherings. I really don't think the Downs is a problem.

You are really much more likely to find it hard to avoid getting close to people on the pavements of Whiteladies Road because of the queues outside the supermarkets (I now walk to the Downs via backstreets).

DD has also walked the dog separately around Clifton Village and Brandon Hill, and has seen more police activity round there.

SophieGiroux · 10/04/2020 23:19

@EasterIssland I'm just avoiding supermarkets now, I think they are the biggest risk. People just don't care about the distancing and now there's been a study that shows the cough droplets remain in the air a lot longer than they thought so you can just be breathing it in when someone has already left the aisle. Avon Valley has a drive thru farm shop, I will try that when I next run out of things. You can see the animals at the same time too.

Quarantino · 10/04/2020 23:30

Not trying to be a dick but this news article on Bristol Live says there's been 24 more cases in the last 24 hours.
www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/cases-coronavirus-bristol-rise-again-4039164

Where did you get the zero number, OP?

Quarantino · 10/04/2020 23:36

Digging deeper I see there was an article about 0 new cases on Tuesday
www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/bristol-coronavirus-cases-latest-figures-4032314

Was 21 on Thu. (Obv real numbers will be higher).

naughtycat · 11/04/2020 00:34

Quarantino....yes sadly I did see that reported today. Looks like the day with zero cases was just some kind of blip in the statistics, rather than something to get excited about 😒
