Bristol...zero cases in 24 hours

Okay, I live in Bristol. I wish everyone in the whole of the UK and Ireland well, and I really want us all to combat this shitty virus as soon as possible.

Today, on the local news, they said that for the first time in (I can't remember exactly how long), that there had been literally zero new diagnosis of covid19 in our city!!! I have to admit I felt so happy 😁 like the lockdown has worked! People have followed the rules!

I feel I must emphasis that I don't take away from the pain and suffering, particularly in London and the East Midlands/Birmingham.....but is this not a sign of hope that lockdown has worked/is working ??

Also, I understand that many people are getting infected without needing hospital treatment.....but this must mean that for 24 hours not one person turned up at hospital needing treatment? We must be in/have passed the peak?!)

(Disclaimer: I am an extremely naive and optimistic person. On waiting list for assessment from ASD team. So please don't be mean).

But this is good isn't it??!

I live in Bristol and shocked at how little cases we have here.

LittleAndOften · 09/04/2020 10:41

@Smilethoyourheartisbreaking nothing that I have said is conjecture and it's not based on modelling. It's based on having no immunity. We are all going to get it at some stage because we have no immunity. That's not a complex thing to get your head around. Lockdown is just to delay the inevitable so the NHS can cope.

BubblesBuddy · 09/04/2020 10:45

Shocked and relieved I hope!

I wonder if the Guardian BAME stats show cultural differences and attitudes towards family and less tolerance of being asked (told) to change habits which are culturally ingrained? Less socialising in pubs and restaurants but more socialising in extended family groups so after the restaurants and bars closed, it didn’t affect some cultural groups much because that wasn’t how they socialised anyway. I’ve seen posters on MN lamenting on the fact DC now don’t see granny every day. I don’t know anyone who sees their granny every day unless granny lives with them.

Just remembering the picture of Bristol city centre before the lockdown, it was totally empty and buses too...

PicsInRed · 09/04/2020 11:04

Before the lockdown it was sligjtly quieter but there were still plenty of people in town. It was easier to get a cafe table, but cafes were still busy.

The parks have been full of sun bathers etc over the past weekend. Social distancing is a mixed bag. Most good, some totally useless.

Is the Greta Thunberg March that is being mentioned the 28th feb one? There were only 19 cases in the UK at that point.
By Cheltenham, two weeks later, there were 1500 so a different situation I think.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/04/2020 11:16

@greyish - it's a good point about the GT march. Probably would have seen the cases by now???

BovaryX · 09/04/2020 11:25

Didn't Greta claim to have the virus? She was headline news. Until this pandemic makes her seem irrelevant

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/04/2020 12:09

@Bovary - Re: Greta - she is reported as having said that she, 'probably' has had the virus based on symptoms after travelling around Europe, but that she hasn't been tested Hmm

Unbelievable really - she was in contact with so many people that it would be helpful to know.

BovaryX · 09/04/2020 12:17

The silence from her given her pre virus ubiquity is quite interesting too. What do Extinction Rebellion have to say? Now global economic activity has ground to a halt, borders closed, tourism and flights grounded? Yes. The very least Greta could do is clarify if she has had the virus.

BubblesBuddy · 09/04/2020 12:49

Well they have the “extinction” bit but not in the way they anticipated.

BovaryX · 09/04/2020 12:58

The cessation of global travel and trade was their wet dream. And here it is.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/04/2020 12:58

What i am wondering is maybe some places do have lots of cases but they just aren't severe enough to get tested, perhaps. not sure. Certainly here in Bath the rates are low online, but I know quite a few e.g. teachers who were off and children before the lockdown, definitely

St Andrew’s Park.

catsandlavender · 09/04/2020 13:05

Oh what good news! I’m from Bristol, lived there all my life until I moved half an hour away but my parents are there. Grin that makes me feel better.

catsandlavender · 09/04/2020 13:11

Also I wonder why there are lower rates in Bristol. I would say that people in Bristol have a very high community spirit, especially in some areas. Maybe this means they are pulling together and following the lockdown? But I doubt any more than other cities.
My parents are also reporting supermarkets very very quiet and streets etc empty at all times, though maybe that’s just their area. It’s quite busy here in clevedon Hmm

Of course it is great news OP! The South west is very low in cases and let us hope it stays that way.

However, this is mumsnet, so I haven't read the thread because I can guarantee there will be many posters along to piss on your chips!

LuckyMarmiteLover · 09/04/2020 13:19

My DH is at the Gloucester Road shops now - glad to hear they are quiet. St. andrew’s Park is lush isn’t it!

Marieo · 09/04/2020 13:45

It is great news, as we know though a day doesn't mean anything really at the moment. Work has begun on turning the conference centre at UWE into a covid hospital which is impressive but scary!
