Covid

Bristol...zero cases in 24 hours

Okay, I live in Bristol. I wish everyone in the whole of the UK and Ireland well, and I really want us all to combat this shitty virus as soon as possible.

Today, on the local news, they said that for the first time in (I can't remember exactly how long), that there had been literally zero new diagnosis of covid19 in our city!!! I have to admit I felt so happy 😁 like the lockdown has worked! People have followed the rules!

I feel I must emphasis that I don't take away from the pain and suffering, particularly in London and the East Midlands/Birmingham.....but is this not a sign of hope that lockdown has worked/is working ??

Also, I understand that many people are getting infected without needing hospital treatment.....but this must mean that for 24 hours not one person turned up at hospital needing treatment? We must be in/have passed the peak?!)

(Disclaimer: I am an extremely naive and optimistic person. On waiting list for assessment from ASD team. So please don't be mean).

But this is good isn't it??!

Don’t want to be negative but on Corona watch with my Stepmother at the moment. If she has it I am fully expecting my Dad to end up in the BRI.

I think your geography, affluence, density and predominantly white population help.

I thought Bristol was quite mixed. Apart from that why would being predominantly white make a difference?

Thank you Smile, not classic symptoms yet and very much hoping it is something else but they were slow to isolate and she uses public transport a lot. It has been incredibly hard work to get them to stay in.

Missing my hometown right now, would love to see the Bridge at the moment. We were looking to move home in a year or two but think it will be tricky after this.

Mockers Bristol is a busier city than the ones you have listed. Especially in terms of nightlife bars restaurants etc and the number of Students.

Really?

Hull is a very vibrant city with a famously productive music scene.

What's unique about Hull, and also maybe Bournemouth, is that both are at the end of one road and on the way to nowhere else.

I live in South Bristol, some areas of which are amount some of the most deprived and overtly stricken areas in the UK. Educational gaps are stark. But as it's a predominantly white poverty stricken area, is that not quite as bad?

And Yes, on the whole Bristol is a very racially diverse city, to its credit.

Naughtycat, Cardiff had the massive stereophonics concert just before lock down, didn't they? That may have helped spike the numbers there.

Bristol has been low, a friend works in a hospital there and she's been wondering.

It will be interesting when this is all over to analyse what influences have been at work.

Bristol social care, care home staff etc. absence through sickness/self isolation is at a much much lower level than other authorities.

Last week it was on the news that Southmead Hospital had a surge in cases,. but turned out it was the was it was being reported, so while hoping there won't be many more cases here in Bristol, spoke to GP surgery yesterday and she said they were definitely seeing an sudden increase Sad

Gloucestershire is really hit though. They are making Tewkesbury hospital a Covid only hospital as Cheltenham and Gloucester hospitals are pretty bad.
I expect Bristol will take some overflow from Gloucestershire

I think too a lot of people drive rather than use public transport

keep
That is a really interesting point. The virus can survive on plastic surfaces for days. Public transport is covered in plastic surfaces, it seems inevitable that it is a transmission vehicle (!) for the virus therefore less use of it will reduce the spread

That is brilliant news.

Maybe people in Bristol follow the guidelines better than people in other areas where the rates are increasing. Perhaps seeing Bristol other areas might follow the guidelines ...(though I doubt it reading some of the posts from idiots who cannot even manage a 2m distance)

I agree with Smile about the rules and being a bit rebellious!

Think the shit public transport is helping Bristol though as it is Bournemouth and Dorset generally.

The south west has low rates because it just hasn't got there yet (I'm glad because I'm from Bristol and my parents, brother and friends live there). But it is coming. Its too contagious and no one has immunity because its a new virus. Everyone's best hope is to avoid it as long as possible until there is some kind of treatment available. The very worst thing to do would be for places like Bristol to relax the social distancing rules.

I'm ill in Bristol with Covid symptoms but haven't tried to get tested. There are probably many unrecorded cases. Before I got ill I'm not sure the social distancing was any better / worse than anywhere else. Ashton court, the Pill path and the docks ( my local exercise spaces) were busy, though people were mostly keeping their distance where possible.

@smilethoyourheartisbreaking sadly we do know. We know that it's not going to just go away by itself. We know humans have no natural immunity to it and it is incredibly contagious. We know it affects some worse than others and we don't always know why. We know that countries further down the line than the UK will get a second wave when they come out of lockdown. Avoidance is the only way right now, until there is treatment.
In hindsight, I do wonder if places with low rates like Bristol should have gone into lockdown at the same time as London. I suppose a blanket lockdown was easier but a delay by a few weeks might have been better.
