Bristol...zero cases in 24 hours

Okay, I live in Bristol. I wish everyone in the whole of the UK and Ireland well, and I really want us all to combat this shitty virus as soon as possible.

Today, on the local news, they said that for the first time in (I can't remember exactly how long), that there had been literally zero new diagnosis of covid19 in our city!!! I have to admit I felt so happy 😁 like the lockdown has worked! People have followed the rules!

I feel I must emphasis that I don't take away from the pain and suffering, particularly in London and the East Midlands/Birmingham.....but is this not a sign of hope that lockdown has worked/is working ??

Also, I understand that many people are getting infected without needing hospital treatment.....but this must mean that for 24 hours not one person turned up at hospital needing treatment? We must be in/have passed the peak?!)

(Disclaimer: I am an extremely naive and optimistic person. On waiting list for assessment from ASD team. So please don't be mean).

But this is good isn't it??!

"It is likely the real figure [of COVID cases] is in the thousands because the Government is only testing certain patients and someNHSworkers."

The test result take anywhere between 48/72 hours to come back so on a small sample there’s going to be variations

Derbygerbil · 17/04/2020 09:08

The number of cases seems really random. One day there are 40 cases, then zero, then 15.

It’s probably down to how they are reported rather than the actual number of cases. Clearly there aren’t going to be 40 cases one day, but miraculously zero the next.

Why was I tagged them deleted @naughtycat ?

naughtycat · 18/04/2020 02:01

@SophieGiroux

Sorry Sophie....I asked for my post to be deleted for other reasons......but the bit I included for you was just to say that I hate supermarkets right now to. I try to go to the supermarket as close as possible to closing time,

@SophieGiroux

Sorry...pressed send to soon...!

Close to closing the supermarkets I'm using tend to be really quiet and definitely no queues to get in! So might be worth a try.

(It was the rest of my post that I needed deleted due to tmi Confused)

We live just down the road and in general there's a bit more space in the West Country, even in Bristol, than in many other parts of the UK which might have helped; it's also a relatively green part of the country in terms of woods, beach access etc. Also, the public transport is pretty rubbish in lots of Bristol and out to many other towns so many people do cycle, or walk, or drive places.

I do wonder if we'll get hit in the next waves a bit harder though. And as a major city for the West Country, parts of Wales/the borders and even parts of the Cotswolds, the Nightingale, if it comes into use, won't only be for Bristol, but for other areas too, as others have pointed out. Many smaller towns (including where I live) have relatively few ITU beds - and the people to staff them, something the government appears to have forgotten, and the media seems to be ignoring. You can't just grow an intensive care specialist overnight even if you have the kit...

Laughing a lot too at the Bristol is only wealthy white folk and descendants of black slaves assertions though, it's one of the overall most welcoming and diverse cities I can think of, certainly in the West Country! And there are people from all classes and backgrounds, it's part of what makes it such an interesting and pleasant city, overall.
