For the developed and resourced country that we are, we are potentially going to be overtaking Italy and Spain by the looks of things.
Australia and other nations have death rates in double figures. They were smart to close borders and even close regions. Canada the same. Denmark, etc. The list goes on. South Korea have the situation under control.
We were warned about this. I feel like majority of those deaths could have been avoided.

Quartz given testing is skewed towards more serious cases, 6% is likely to be much higher than the true number.

sniggy01 · 04/04/2020 19:53

Sorry but I don't think you are correct in saying that 50% of people will die - even as alarming as it is it is much smaller than that. If 20000 people die as is predicted at the moment then that is horrific but only a small percentage of the population

excitedmumtobe87 · 04/04/2020 20:30

marsha well there’s Germany for starters. Keeping their own citizens alive thanks to quick action, rigorous testing, and also able to help other countries by taking patients on

Bool · 04/04/2020 20:34

@excitedmumtobe87 Let’s wait and see on Germany. Even they admit that the virus has hit a younger part of their population (those with corona median age 47 vs 64 in Italy). Let’s just wait and see. There is no reason why Germany should be lower other than demographics whilst the health services are not swamped. Testing affects rate of death (because the denominator is lower) but not the actual number.

excitedmumtobe87 · 04/04/2020 20:41

It’s been said yesterday that it now seems to be hitting those of a younger age in general now. It’s not just Germany.

And the Germany median age is increasing. It was low at first because it was caught by the younger generations visiting and working in Italian ski resorts but the age is rising as it spreads. Because they test so much they’re reporting the mild cases younger people have whereas here we have no idea of the true data.

MarshaBradyo · 04/04/2020 20:41

Yep to what Bool says. It looks better atm but let’s see what happens.

excitedmumtobe87 · 04/04/2020 20:42

It was said yesterday By the WHO

excitedmumtobe87 · 04/04/2020 20:43

I guess we can only all just wait and see though. That’s right. Our true death figures are 10 days behind so it’ll take time to know

Who calls it a spectrum of severity

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/04/2020 20:59

Isn’t it 50% who are on a ventilator will die

That is shockingly high but still a small percentage of people who become unwell

But those numbers are still high

MarshaBradyo · 04/04/2020 21:03

Yes I thought it ventilator too

Blossomad · 04/04/2020 21:07

My Stepfather died today of Covid.
My sister was there with him and facilitated the family talking to him through an iPad. I feel for her as she has been trying to conceive and put herself in danger to try and give him a dignified death.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2020 21:10

So sorry to hear this blossomad

MarshaBradyo · 04/04/2020 21:10

Blossomad so sad sorry to hear about your Stepfather Flowers

Blossomad · 04/04/2020 21:11

And now she will have to isolate completely for longer and we won’t be able to comfort her in person. At least her husband is nice. He works for the BBC and they both have been strictly isolating and working from home for the last month.

Blossomad · 04/04/2020 21:18

I have another friend seriously ill at her home as well. She has a young child. Pre existing health conditions. I’m praying she will make it. Her boyfriend is caring for her and he has it too.
A friend and neighbour wants me to go to hers for drinks tomorrow but I’m not going to go. She seems a bit blasé about it. She was going for a jog every day when she had symptoms? Not a confirmed case but I find that odd. She can’t have been that ill I suppose but if I had symptoms I wouldn’t go out at all.

excitedmumtobe87 · 04/04/2020 21:27

@Blossomad I’m so sorry to hear this. Sending a virtual hug to you and your family. I hope your friend can fight this and feels better soon. Xxx

sausagepeasandmash · 04/04/2020 22:13

Can I just ask if the OP is suggesting that Italy is not a developed and resourceful country?! It had the misfortune of being the first country outside of China to have to deal with large numbers of infections and deaths. The UK could have learnt something from how Italy handled the situation, especially on the beginning. It didn't and it still isn't. Italy is.my second home and for your information IS developed and resourceful. How dare you.

Wehttam · 04/04/2020 22:15

Sorry to read that Blossom x

Mypathtriedtokillme · 04/04/2020 22:21

Australia only has low figures due to pure luck (and we are a few weeks behind the UK) because everything here has been a total fuck up and a show of incompetence and poor leadership.

Greenpop21 · 04/04/2020 22:33

Australia still has shops open such as high end jewellers. WTH?

Bool · 05/04/2020 01:49

@Blossomad sending you all my love Flowers

Standrewsschool · 05/04/2020 09:14

There’s a thread for Australian mn-etter to chat. I read the last pages of it yesterday. The situation seems a right shambles over there. Their lockdown is also a lot more relaxed also, with romantic partners able to visit each other.

Annaram1 · 05/04/2020 10:35

My son who is a doctor has been told to limit the amount of PPE he uses. I am worried about him.
