For the developed and resourced country that we are, we are potentially going to be overtaking Italy and Spain by the looks of things.
Australia and other nations have death rates in double figures. They were smart to close borders and even close regions. Canada the same. Denmark, etc. The list goes on. South Korea have the situation under control.
We were warned about this. I feel like majority of those deaths could have been avoided.

WHO have said that the UKs initial strategy of letting everyone getting the virus and seeing who is still alive at the end was immoral ad that there are other ways to tackle this without killing lots of people.

Where did they say that?

And how do you explain why Labour and the SNP (and the other political parties) were in agreement with the government's course of action after cross party talks? The evidence of that is on Question Time 12th March - the cross party talks took place earlier that day -announced in the House of Commons the day before.

oldbeforem · 04/04/2020 11:24

@Wehttam other countries lock downs have still led them to the same position that we are in.

GivenchyD · 04/04/2020 11:24

'don’t think the personal attacks on alloutoffucks are necessary.'

I havent seen any personal tracks just disputes of her hyperbole. Please report PAs though.

Look, we're all scared. It is a sad time. But saying 'shielded people are dispensable!' is incredibly distressing for those of us shielded or shielding and splitting hairs with wet market definitions to score points is not necessary.

Alloutoffucks and wehtam seem to be able to dish out the sneers but can't stand even a bit of mild questioning and pointing out no, that is not true.

mochajoes · 04/04/2020 11:27

@Wehttam
Why are you intolerant of anyone that disagrees with you?

Random18 · 04/04/2020 11:29

Shanghai no they don't.

People are understandably scared, some more than others.

What I see here is some essentially trying to shut down the conversation by throwing accusations all over the place.

I truly believe that we won't be able to shield people long term if we stay in lockdown.

In a few weeks time we need to slowly start to kick start things again, whilst still being careful.

I accept I will probably have to get CV but I will follow all the instructions I am given to help our NHS.

I do not want my parents to get it.

GivenchyD · 04/04/2020 11:30

'Oh & now we are vultures. The irony '

Yes that isn't a personal attack though, it's only a personal attack if we tell people to stop with their 'we're dispensable!!' comments and question their ott inaccuracies.

mochajoes · 04/04/2020 11:33

@GivenchyD echo chambers only apparently 🙉

Bool · 04/04/2020 11:34

@Wehttam nobody ever said that ‘no way schools would never close.’ The government never said that! They said they would introduce measures at the right time.

And eventually people will understand that herd immunity is not a strategy. It is going to happen whether we like it or not.

But I’ve had this now on another thread with people changing the narrative - so will stop there.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2020 11:34

Dare I say, we should look at what China is doing to manage the process of coming out of lockdown?
Whether we believe their numbers or not, we will face the same challenges in terms of reducing restrictions, protecting the most vulnerable and trying to ensure the economy does not completely collapse.

Bool · 04/04/2020 11:36

@alloutoffucks implied that I was happy that many people die. That is a personal attack in my book.

Bool · 04/04/2020 11:37

@ShanghaiDiva China has closed its borders indefinitely. I cannot see that happening in the UK.

Random18 · 04/04/2020 11:38

Shanghai yes.

The only difference i think it that China wants no cases.

The UK i think does still believe in herd immunity so will not necessarily aim to prevent all cases.

China is in a better position to essentially shut herself off.

And when this is all over, I hope we have a good hard look at our reliance on China.

MarshaBradyo · 04/04/2020 11:43

I don’t think the U.K. can get to the same position as China through this lock down

Wehttam · 04/04/2020 11:46

✌🏼 I can’t waste an more energy on this thread, arguing with shadows.

No doubt I’ll encounter some of the paid staff on other threads 🛡⚔️

mochajoes · 04/04/2020 11:48

I'm assuming the lockdown will be relaxed somewhat & then back on for another peak, like waves.

mochajoes · 04/04/2020 11:49

@Wehttam you really need to get out more 😜

MarshaBradyo · 04/04/2020 11:54

It’s true I’m enjoying the hefty extra money

Madbengalmum · 04/04/2020 11:55

There are so many people on here who could do things so much better than the government! FFS this is an unprecedented pandemic, politicising it won’t help. Nobody knows what works at the moment, only time will tell, but Nothing so sure as the Lovey mumsnetters with crystal balls know the answers!

CendrillonSings · 04/04/2020 11:57

Have fun enjoying what sounds like a rich and varied fantasy life! Grin

UYScuti · 04/04/2020 11:58

These filthy grim places
When it's over there will be a reckoning and the whole world knows that all the chaos fear and destruction was caused by what came from the (filthy grim) heart of China.
How is that going to play out?

Tonyaster · 04/04/2020 12:08

Wehttam. Have fun enjoying what sounds like a rich and varied fantasy life! Grin

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2020 12:17

@Bool
I was thinking more along the lines of managing social distancing and kids returning to school and restaurants opening etc rather than closing borders.

Quartz2208 · 04/04/2020 12:25

I have and will never vote for a Tory Government but neither to ascribe to the view that we handled it worse than other Governments (and I certainly dont think Trump has better at all).

Neither can we look to China because the system there is just sooo different to here and always will be. I dont particularly see Italy/Spain lockdowns as being followed to the letter either. Sweden dont have one and Denmark are stopping theirs soon

But this is what it is a Viral Pandemic and we cannot get through it without some loss of life or change we just cant

Testing though is where we really have been let down

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2020 12:39

The system in China is very different and they were able to build on existing control measures. However, some of the restrictions they introduced could have been replicated by other countries eg 14 day self isolation for arrivals from infected areas eg Australia did this back in early feb for arrivals from China.

BeijingBikini · 04/04/2020 12:42

Paid staff? I bloody wish, I'd love to argue online for a living - I do it all day for free when pretending to "WFH"
