Could this be the end of the Royal family?

I don't mean if they die of the virus...

But there's nothing like a lockdown to really highlight inequality. I saw an article yesterday about Kate + William "isolating" at Anmer Hall, having done a photoshoot where they pretend to be on the telephone and writing ("working").

I think if people are going to have to spend months at home, in small flats with kids, still going out to work or trying to WFH, queueing for supermarkets with empty shelves......that could definitely breed some discontent. Or if people catch it and have to be treated in makeshift hospitals, not getting an ambulance until they're struggling to breathe, while the RF can be whisked away to a private hospital for treatment. I've already seen a lot of comments along the lines of "why don't they offer up their many palaces to be used as hospitals, rather than doing newspaper articles".

Opinions?

Apparently national happiness shot up during the abdication 😁 we all love abit of schardenfrauder (sp)

AdaColeman · 31/03/2020 10:04

Harry and Meghan no longer take taxpayer money so they’re out of this debate

Taxpayers, via the Met, still foot the vast bill for H&M’s security, in contradiction of the H&M statement indicating that they pay their own security costs.

MangoFeverDream · 31/03/2020 10:16

He also said from footage he'd seen the helicopters William was flying and the role he was in was one of the most basic, unskilled levels of pilot there is

Does he not have eyesight issues? I don’t think ordinarily he’d have made the cut.

farfallarocks · 31/03/2020 10:16

They could sign up to the nhs volunteer scheme. That clapping video, cute kids but I have to say it made my blood boil, staged and just so insensitive! Look at us in our beautiful walled garden where the kids are having a magical Easter break. Meanwhile back in the real world people are fighting for survival, fighting for their jobs, depressed and worried about their kids and trying to balance work, kids, time to get food. As I said I have always been a royalist and they go this so very badly wrong.

Peregrina · 31/03/2020 10:28

Why were they bothering to clap during the daytime? It was just a pointless piece of PR. The only NHS hospital they are likely to see, assuming it still exists, will be when they go to open the Prince George Hospital, or the Princess Charlotte Maternity Wing.

eddiemairswife · 31/03/2020 10:50

But you can't fault the biscuits; they are delicious.

YogaLite · 31/03/2020 11:36

Am I the only one who would expect the royals to do a bit more than stand clapping and stage a photoshoot, like maybe write out a big fat cheque for some PPE or make a big donation to NHS?

Or is it always one way street when it comes to their generous government funding?

MagicKingdomDizzy · 31/03/2020 11:46

YogaLite

No you aren't alone.

Their contributions are woefully inadequate, and it will be remembered when this is all over.

People were already questioning their antiquated existance in an otherwise modern age. It's possible that when The Queen dies it will all be over for them.

I'm certain members of their staff monitor the general public opinion of them on forums such as this. So for any staff of the Royal Family reading this.....

They need to do more. They can do more. They have the financial ability to do more. People are crying out for help, and you need to listen.

Write a cheque, donate some property. Whatever. Just do something useful.

Lumene · 31/03/2020 11:48

Yes a chunk of cash would save lives.

Justaboy · 31/03/2020 11:55

my DH was in the RAF. There are 1000s of fully trained pilots at any point who would happily step up right now to do this job. He also said from footage he'd seen the helicopters William was flying and the role he was in was one of the most basic, unskilled levels of pilot there is

Well there are a lot of pilots around twiddling their thumbs most all airline flyers on fixed wing aircraft by the time they've done conversions to rotary wing this show will be all over.

Surely not suggesting the Brylcreem boys should be doing the job?

I've seen the air ambulamnce take off/ land on a few occasions once at night in very bad weather, wouldn't say it was one of the easist most unskilled bit of flying around.

He's more lilkey than not bored being stuck in all day with her indoors like may other couples in this enforced house arrest!

AdaColeman · 31/03/2020 11:58

@YogaLite
I’m another who would like to see the members of the RF dipping into their vast personal fortunes to fund projects such as emergency field hospitals. I’d be more impressed with that than with photos of nicely dressed children clapping.
I think that by their total lack of practical action they are proving just how irrelevant the RF are. Their only concern is to protect themselves and maintain their privileged position.

YogaLite · 31/03/2020 11:58

Bet they are planning next PR moment, a hazmat photoshoot with a helicopter?

farfallarocks · 31/03/2020 11:58

They should in full hazmat at hospitals or delivering food. Meanwhile Harry and Megan are house bunting in LA. Not sure
Who is advising them but they might have a few brain cells between them to work it out on their own?

RapunzelinQuarantine · 31/03/2020 12:14

Harry and Meghan are doing what we’ve all been told to do, go on lockdown.

Prince Charles is flying to his second home (explicitly not allowed) in the Highlands (after Nicola Sturgeon explicitly namechecked the Highlands in her request for non-Scottish second home owners to stay away), and got on a plane and travelled after he’d developed symptoms of C19 (against every rule!!). He got access to a test that NHS workers and seriously ill people don’t get despite having only minor symptoms. And has 5 staff members looking after him even after diagnosis who have now been directly exposed and can’t see their families because an adult man with only minor symptoms can’t cook his own food or wipe his own arse.

Will and Kate did a photoshoot with emergency personal where they ignored social distancing guidelines to stay 6.6ft away, even though they had recently been travelling and meet and shake hands with large numbers of people meaning they’re high risk for being spreaders, endangering emergency workers just for a PR stunt and setting a bad example.

They should all stay home, furlough all their cooks and maids and footmen, run around their huge castles and grounds, donate money and do online statements only. Will and Kate are perfectly placed to record videos on things to do with kids during lockdown and the public would love that and it would generate goodwill. Lots of people look up to them and this is their opportunity to be good role models, not flagrantly ignore social distancing rules and endanger others.

OtterPotter · 31/03/2020 12:50

@sundowners
RE. William saying how much he wants to be a helicopter pilot again my DH was in the RAF. There are 1000s of fully trained pilots at any point who would happily step up right now to do this job. He also said from footage he'd seen the helicopters William was flying and the role he was in was one of the most basic, unskilled levels of pilot there is

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that your DH was not a pilot. Because he's displaying a shocking lack of the basic level of understanding of the job.

HappyHammy · 31/03/2020 12:51

PC should donate all Duchy foods and meat and veg to essential workers.

Mamamia456 · 31/03/2020 12:57

Farfallrocks - FGS - I've heard it all now, the royal family are not trained doctors you idiot.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 12:59

@YogaLite

No, @Clavinova things a 5 second video of clapping children is a perfectly adequate response to the pandemic by our head of state. And if you dare question it, the viewing numbers will be trotted out 😂😂

However @clavinova cannot answer why the royals dont do something that involves giving their own resources, such as kate batch cooking meals for NHS workers, wills going back to his only real job that he had for less than 2 years, empty palaces being utilised (seeing as william cares so much about the homeless) or food being donated from the Duchy. Not to mention forfeiting the sovereign grant as we head for recession.

If any of the above is mentioned, the clapping and wessex videos are whipped out again.

Wolfgirrl · 31/03/2020 13:00

@Mamamia456 I agree but what about the suggestions in my previous post?

Any excuses there?

MintyMabel · 31/03/2020 13:01

he'd seen the helicopters William was flying and the role he was in was one of the most basic, unskilled levels of pilot there is

Yeah, air ambulance flying is a piece of piss. No skill needed there at all. Landing a helicopter on the side of a mountain is so simple, as is grounding it atop a city centre hospital on a tiny helipad buffeted by high winds.

Zilla1 · 31/03/2020 13:03

What would be worse? What's being seen now or some lip-service actions like those proposed above that will then be used by those who want to, like the 'Royals led the NHS clap'? I'd rather not see such 'lip-service' PR acts, especially given the operational impacts whenever there's a 'hard at work' Royal visiting a Trust or practice. Now I know some will say they can't win.

MsTSwift · 31/03/2020 13:06

Do you know off the top of my head I can think of about 10 individuals who would do a far “better job” than this current collection of dullards. And that’s just people I happen to know.

Imagine being stuck next to William and Kate at a dinner party - kill me now.

Womenwotlunch · 31/03/2020 13:07

Agree that the Royals need to do much more.
I have not been impressed by their efforts.
Their privileged lifestyle is becoming more evident when one compares it to the adverse affect the coronavirus has had on the finances of the public.

Mamamia456 · 31/03/2020 13:08

Wolfgirrl - So you think that the royal family not being trained doctors is an excuse? Hahaha.

sundowners · 31/03/2020 13:14

MintyMabel & OtterPotter you sound as if you feel you are experts- your expertise is from what experience please as you sound very confident?

The most skilled roles in the RAF are fast jet pilots used to be single seat pilots and then again, were harrier pilots.
As William did- flying a sea king is not that hard as a pilot if you had exceptional skills- The hierarchy- just to clarify:

  1. Amazing pilots = fast jet and then single seat and then harrier
2. Very very good = Fast jet and then single seat like a jaguar
  1. Very good = fast jet two seat, like tornado
  1. Good pilot = helicopter. This is Williams level
