Could this be the end of the Royal family?

I don't mean if they die of the virus...

But there's nothing like a lockdown to really highlight inequality. I saw an article yesterday about Kate + William "isolating" at Anmer Hall, having done a photoshoot where they pretend to be on the telephone and writing ("working").

I think if people are going to have to spend months at home, in small flats with kids, still going out to work or trying to WFH, queueing for supermarkets with empty shelves......that could definitely breed some discontent. Or if people catch it and have to be treated in makeshift hospitals, not getting an ambulance until they're struggling to breathe, while the RF can be whisked away to a private hospital for treatment. I've already seen a lot of comments along the lines of "why don't they offer up their many palaces to be used as hospitals, rather than doing newspaper articles".

Opinions?

Thanks, @ Escapeistheonlyoption I never heard about this before:

Don't ask who gets COVID tests when front line NHS can't, OP.

Princess Diana used to walk around landmines and hold hands with AIDS sufferers in hospital. William and Harry went to war. I thought the whole reason for the Royal Family was for times like this - to unite a country and lead by example. These staged photos of them sitting in a palace talking on the phone (with whom? about what?!) are pathetic. At least Harry had the decency to formally abdicate his responsibilities.

WinterCat · 30/03/2020 13:27

I keep changing my mind about my view on the Royal Family but I don’t think this right now is really what people are focused on. They are worrying about plenty of other things. The Royal Family has historically always been wealthy and living far outside the means of most others.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 30/03/2020 13:28

On the style & beauty threads Kate’s suit has been identified as M&S - hardly a beautiful cut suit.

I’m not quite sure what else they could have done. The photos were to help launch their CV MH campaign I thought? I may be wrong though!

anotherlittlechicken · 30/03/2020 13:28

No. It won't end them, as much as some people would like it to.

FizzAfterSix · 30/03/2020 13:31

I can’t believe Harry and Megan get to move house and country with all their security, pets and staff, during a pandemic when we are all meant to stay at home.

SoupDragon · 30/03/2020 13:31

Why cant their London homes be used for health workers and.a military hospital build in the grounds.

Hardly as practical as the current arrangements being put in place...

Quite. It is far more practical to use empty open plan conference facilities than historic buildings or building something from scratch.

SoupDragon · 30/03/2020 13:32

... and the empty hotels etc

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/03/2020 13:33

Plenty of non-royals have buggered off to their 2nd homes.
And besides the non-famous I dare say a good many waste of space celebs* have pissed off to their Wiltshire farms or 5 acres in the Cotswolds, too.
*I loathe that word but needs must.

UntamedWisteria · 30/03/2020 13:35

OP, social inequality exists in this country. Get over it.

The Royal family aren't the only people whose wealth allows them to wait out lockdown in greater comfort than people living on a council estate.

Escapeistheonlyoption · 30/03/2020 13:36

Plenty of non-royals have buggered off to their 2nd homes.

And been criticised or even thrown out of the village.
Not praised on Twitter and in The Daily Mail.

Justajot · 30/03/2020 13:38

I wasn't convinced about the kids clapping for the NHS that they will probably never use.

Lynda07 · 30/03/2020 13:38

No I don't. I couldn't care less what the D & D of Cambridge do in their own home but publishing pictures of themselves at home is hardly different to what others put on facebook. There are people who like to see them and say so, therefore they oblige. It's not as if they are always publicising themselves.

What's the problem?

Exoffice · 30/03/2020 13:39

one can only hope. We are having a huge national crisis whilst our royal spongers decamp to their second homes, go into hiding.

We have Wills and Kate - two healthy and technically unemployed adults who do not have childcare commitments (nanny and other minions at hand). Instead of make a statement how they care by volunteering for the NHS/foodbanks/etc, they go into hiding at their stately home and post some staged pictures pretenting to do something..

Don't get me started on this half minute preachy video shit posted by the Wessex woman.

And not a peep from the head of state.

If this is all they have to offer, they are truly redundant.

I hope this will be the end of them!

mrscampbellblackagain · 30/03/2020 13:43

I think the RF will change dramatically once the Queen isn't around anyway.

Was also going to comment on the 'beautifully cut suit' - it was an m&s monstrosity with baggy knees but another poster beat me to it Wink

Iwalkinmyclothing · 30/03/2020 13:43

Goodness, I hope so.

Crinkle77 · 30/03/2020 13:44

@UntamedWisteria

My sentiments exactly.

Ironfloor269 · 30/03/2020 13:44

God I hope so.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 30/03/2020 13:45

You do understand we’d be worse off without them?

Possibly a tiny bit financially worse off, but probably not noticeably so- and we wouldn't be living in an insane situation where people were deemed to be superior because of who they had been born to or married.

Fuss · 30/03/2020 13:46

I'm a bit surprised we've not had an address from Queenie yet myself.

Purplecatshopaholic · 30/03/2020 13:46

I hope this is the end of them. I have no time for them anyway, but some people still do - I genuinely don’t understand why. Their response since this crisis hit has at best been useless, and at worst just plain wrong. Fkn off to your second home when we have all been told not put to? Great example set right there.

UYScuti · 30/03/2020 13:46

It's also very 'let them eat cake' isn't it...

Iwalkinmyclothing · 30/03/2020 13:46

OP, social inequality exists in this country. Get over it.

Of course it exists if the response to it is "get over it"

Hmm
GabsAlot · 30/03/2020 13:47

Going against the grain here but no-they cant win right now can they if they do nothihng theyre usless if they join in their showing off

Why does it bother everyone so much
