Our human rights have been taken away

Soph7777 · 29/03/2020 23:40

I know it's for a good cause.

I know it's to save lives.

But our basic human rights have been taken from under us, in the short space of a week.

I find this part most of all the scariest.

I'm really struggling mentally with government control to this extent.

How long can this last before people lose their minds and rebel?

I don't even understand what freedoms we've supposedly lost that are so hard to deal with?

You can still go food shopping. You can go running. You can walk the dog. You can still volunteer for good causes. Still have a home, money, luxury goods, clothes, etc.

Work life might be different for a while, granted. And you can't go for a beer. But you can still order takeout. Stream movies. Read books. Lots of normal, lovely activities. You can still online shop as well.

Yes, we are limited, but we aren't locked in our houses 24/7. Surely, if your issue is being locked away, over and above catching CV, things aren't actually that bad?

timeisnotaline · 30/03/2020 00:47

I think you should start a new thread and ask for help with your mental health with staying at home, you will get a lot of sympathy and support op. Try to avoid saying things like ‘people keep talking about the many many people who will die but what about meeeee.’ This thread has gone the way it has because I’m afraid that doesn’t sound anxious and like you need help, it sounds incredibly self centred and callous. I’m trying to help so please don’t just dismiss this as nasty!

In the meantime, remember you aren’t being controlled. You can communicate with just about anyone in the world, you can say whatever you want, you can think wear read watch and within current availability eat whatever you want whcih are all enormous freedoms for much of the world. Also hold on to what you said up thread - if you were leading the country you would be applying the same policies. If you were leading the country what would you say or do for people like you who are finding it hard?

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 30/03/2020 00:47

We are, in a sense, upholding article 20 right now. This could possibly be called a meeting - if you can have a meeting by Skype or other technological means, why not on SM? And MN is definitely a group.

Children have been sent home with educational materials, & there have been lots, lots of free materials made available over the past few days that either didn't previously exist, or were only available by subscription.

Rr: citizenship - no-one's citizenship is being revoked?

Soph7777 · 30/03/2020 00:48

‘people keep talking about the many many people who will die but what about meeeee.

When did I say that?

OP posts:
vegvegveg · 30/03/2020 00:49

Seriously get over yourself. Think about what some of the people in India are going through then come back and have a moan about your 'human rights'..

Ladiva1971 · 30/03/2020 00:50

I think common sense over rules human rights at the moment.

LimitIsUp · 30/03/2020 00:51

Soph7777
Step away from the thread. This has turned into a pile on which won't help your state of mind.

Noneyerbuisness11234 · 30/03/2020 00:52

Think of it as ur writing history ur grandkids great grandkids will learn of the coronavirus lockdown the things we go through the same way I learnt of the troubles and Irish history and the famine our human rights haven't been removed we're saving lives by removing ourselves and staying at home

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/03/2020 00:52

Try to avoid saying things like ‘people keep talking about the many many people who will die but what about meeeee.’ This thread has gone the way it has because I’m afraid that doesn’t sound anxious and like you need help, it sounds incredibly self centred and callous

All these threads involve this attitude to others, and they all end up the same way.

Soph7777 · 30/03/2020 00:52

@LimitIsUp thanks I was just about to leave it.

It's just too much.

OP posts:
timeisnotaline · 30/03/2020 00:53

I know you don’t think you said that op, but communication is only as effective as what others hear. That is what everyone heard when you wrote ‘ Why when anyone complains do people remind me of the deaths?’
We remind people of the deaths because they are our loved ones. They are our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, doctors and nurses. Because it’s more than worth it to keep as many as possible of them safe. Would you honestly prefer to be a doctor and heading our daily to work your 12, 15, 19 hour shift in an overflowing hospital? That’s not so much freedom as dedication and heroism.

480Widdio · 30/03/2020 00:54

I agree with you OP,but what I do know it won’t be for as long as some of the prophets of doom are predicting.

Soph7777 · 30/03/2020 00:55

I honestly think for some posters on here it makes them feel better about themselves to tell others how they're self centred, mean, callous for merely expressing their thoughts and opinions.

So many of you must be perfect IRL clearly

OP posts:
Fieldofgreycorn · 30/03/2020 00:55

But we’re all in the same boat. The politicians and police can no more go to the cinema, gym or restaurants etc any more than we can.

ilovesooty · 30/03/2020 01:02

@480Widdio you don't know. No one does.

Donkeytail · 30/03/2020 01:02

I think a lot people are just fed up of the whining at this point. It's like when your kid is in the car asking are we there yet repeatedly. We are all fed up, we are all dealing with the same thing but jesus it doesn't help anyone to go on and on about how shit it is. We all fucking know already.
Most of us are just taking it day by day and putting our best foot forward because what is the point in whining about it, it wont change anything, it won't fix anything, it just spreads misery and there is enough of that already.

This lockdown is entirely voluntary.
Once people get that 120000 people can't control 66m people the lockdown is over.
No real rebellion, just a real reckoning.
3 weeks, at best.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/03/2020 01:06

"How odd, I'm sure most people are really enjoying losing their jobs, income, freedom, holidays, relatives etc. "

To be fair, there are some twats around saying they're 'enjoying' lockdown.

Samtsirch · 30/03/2020 01:09

OP
I think the clue was in temporarily
Maybe stop posting.
Or imagine if you couldn’t post anymore, forever...
Did you bother to research Amnesty international or are you just responding in anger
They are not called articles anymore.

Onacleardayyoucansee · 30/03/2020 01:13

Ive always had a lot of respect for Mumsnetters.
Really surprised by these responses.

Aggressive, ascerbic and unnecessarily foul mouthed bunch on this thread.
When people feel fragile anyway.
Check yourselves.
Hmm

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 30/03/2020 01:15

Competitive quarantining strikes again.

DaveTheDesigner · 30/03/2020 01:16

Oh for God’s sake. Seriously? I used to hate the Snowflake insult during the Brexit nonsense but I think I’ve found a use for it now.

HigherFinish · 30/03/2020 01:18

Why have you started another thread on this?

You need to find something to entertain yourself with.

greytminds · 30/03/2020 01:23

“This lockdown is entirely voluntary”.

No it isn’t. Laws have been created with the purpose of expressly limiting our personal freedoms.

Of course this has been done for our own good in order to protect our society from being overwhelmed by a virus, but it has still been done.

I find the responses to this thread really puzzling. How can people not see that their rights have been taken away and they are no longer free to go about their daily lives?! Still being able to go for a run isn’t freedom!

You might not agree with the OP in terms of her/your reaction to the current situation but that doesn’t stop her assertions being true.

Many people on this thread ought to think about being kinder to others. Please remember what happens when you treat others with such spite and contempt.
