Our human rights have been taken away

Soph7777 · 29/03/2020 23:40

I know it's for a good cause.

I know it's to save lives.

But our basic human rights have been taken from under us, in the short space of a week.

I find this part most of all the scariest.

I'm really struggling mentally with government control to this extent.

How long can this last before people lose their minds and rebel?

@feefee322 and what about us health care professionals who don't want to risk it but we can't stay at home because we have to look after selfish people like you?

It isn't really government control........let's face it if everyone in the UK raged against the machine so to speak thered be sod all the forces could do.

It's human decency at its best, falling into line too make sure we're all safe

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 30/03/2020 00:32

OP just chunk it down in smaller periods of time. 3 weeks(as announced so far), one week, days if necessary. Looking at it as a whole (especially worst case scenario) can be massively overwhelming and claustrophobic.

Try and get into a routine that gives you the feeling of control and still "doing" things.

Focus on the things you are allowed to do ,plan them,do them.

Depending on your lifestyle (boring homebody here) if you take it day by day you might not even see a massive difference to your lifestyle. Hopefully you're a boring homebody like me and not a social butterfly.

Sounds daft but OU have loads of free courses going, if it's your thing have a look and see if anything sparks your interest. 2 ten hour(they always take less) courses make the day pass quicker and you feel you achieved something at the end.

What's a GF?! @yatapina

Just so far from what we are used to as a society that it's just hit me how much we are confined.

Isn't it strange how many of the countries that have / recently had strict regimes, extreme poverty, etc, have just got on with lockdown. Like they knew they really had so little to lose anyway. We have so much in this country, people are so cosseted, wrapped in cotton wool, we have state healthcare & benefits (say what you like about how well they work) it's a shock when there's a real catastrophe. Some people clearly just can't cope. I don't think it's so much that we're confined now, although we are, it's that our comfortable modern lives have been turned upside down.

“Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.” I sincerely hope, for my DD's sake, that it's true.

Cohle · 30/03/2020 00:33

I suggest you refer to Article 15 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

"Human Rights" aren't some vague, ephemeral concept. They are limited and specifically enumerated. Which precise rights do you think you are being deprived of?

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 30/03/2020 00:35

@feefee322 GF = Goady Fucker.

AutumnRose1 · 30/03/2020 00:35

OP I think the hysteria forced the PM’s hand, luckily I think he’s not naturally inclined to this sort of thing (famous last words)

Clearly a lot of us feel this way so do write to your local MP.

Soph7777 · 30/03/2020 00:36

#BeKind was an utter load of bollocks probably invented by those very hypocrites that are being horrible on this thread.

It made them feel better for five minutes by posting on their social media and now they're back to their old habits.

Some of the reactions here are really weird.

You I've no idea about my life and what else I'm facing as a result of CV so do one.

If We are always comparing ourselves to others why does anyone in this country suffer mental health or moan about anything?

I KNOW the nurses are doing an amazing job I never said they weren't.

I also know social distancing is necessary.

But this very country was built on freedoms and choices and in the blink of an eye, although temporary, a lot of it has been lost.

I think you have to be from another planet to not be upset about that.

Likewise, you've no idea what daily challenges any of us deal with.

yatapina · 30/03/2020 00:38

@feefee322 - Goady fucker.

In it to stir the shit and get a reaction by posting something dickish "controversial".

UYScuti · 30/03/2020 00:39

I don't think we will rebel
because enough of us realise that the only way forward is to co-operate
Because enough of us realise this we will collectively adjust our behaviour and 'nudge' everyone into line

wickedgames · 30/03/2020 00:39

And you think you're being kind by not giving a fuck if you infect other people potentially killing them?

returnofthecat · 30/03/2020 00:40

OP, the way that I rationalise it is that my right to go out when I want to and do whatever I want to does not trump other people's rights to stay alive. It really is that black and white.

When you think about the impact on other people, it becomes much easier to accept the current situation.

If there were no rules on staying inside, wouldn't you want to stay inside anyway, to help save lives? If you think of it from that point of view, the rules aren't stopping you from doing anything that you wouldn't have stopped yourself, given the choice. So, the rules aren't controlling you - they're controlling the other, selfish people who don't care about other people's lives.

Samtsirch · 30/03/2020 00:41

If you are worried about your human rights OP
Research Amnesty International.
Do you have a warm bed to sleep in
Do you have access to privacy
Food
Clean water
Toilet facilities
Being able to move
The list is probably endless
But trust me you have human rights .

Soph7777 · 30/03/2020 00:43

Human rights that are temporarily taken away;

Article 13: We all have the right to move freely within our country, and to visit and leave other countries when we wish.
*
Article 15*: We all have the right to be a citizen of a country and nobody should prevent us, without good reason, from being a citizen of another country if we wish.

Article 20: We should all have the right to form groups and organise peaceful meetings. Nobody should be forced to belong to a group if they don’t want to.
*
Article 26*: Everyone has the right to education. Primary schooling should be free. We should all be able to continue our studies as far as we wish. At school we should be helped to develop our talents, and be taught an understanding and respect for everyone’s human rights. We should also be taught to get on with others whatever their ethnicity, religion, or country they come from. Our parents have the right to choose what kind of school we go to.
*
Article 30*: No government, group or individual should act in a way that would destroy the rights and freedoms of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Now please don't tell me
Some of our human rights haven't been affected. Rightly or wrongly they have. And I'm not suggesting there's another way, but they've definitely been affected.

LadyDoc1 · 30/03/2020 00:43

Perhaps people will rebel, out of stupidity and selfishness. They'll take others down with them

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 30/03/2020 00:43

#BeKind. Stay away. Physically I mean. I don't fancy dying of it. And if I have it, I don't want to give it to you. I suspect 99.99999% of the population concurs with my sentiment.

Mittens030869 · 30/03/2020 00:43

Not true. I don't know anyone who is happy about the situation.

Exactly. I don't exactly like the fact that we have 2 stir crazy DDs who are at home all day and not at school. It isn't what I would choose at all. But the alternative is far worse, because so many idiots weren't practising social distancing and that was putting so many other people at risk.

I've been very unwell with an infection that I'm struggling to recover from. It could be COVID-19, it has some very similar symptoms. If it isn't, then I'm at risk of catching it, and, the way I am right now, that would be terrifying. There are also people far more at risk than I am.

No, I don't like it, I don't think anyone genuinely enjoys being under lockdown. But I can't think of another way to minimise the risk we're all facing.

Actually, most people do understand why the government did this (Johnson certainly didn't want to do it) and I've found my friends to be really supportive of each other and to have a common goal of getting through this pandemic with as few fatalities as possible.

ChipotleBlessing · 30/03/2020 00:44

This country was built on an empire which specifically removed freedoms and choices from a lot of the world. We’ve been privileged before, through luck of birth. We’ve done nothing to earn our freedoms. For most of us this is probably the first time in our lives we’ve been asked to do something genuinely difficult for the greater good. It’s difficult to adjust to, but that’s it.

UYScuti · 30/03/2020 00:45

in a very short space of time we've gone from just going about as normal to; no one's on the streets there's no cars, people run away from you if you get too near.
And significantly we have done it willingly (albeit grudgingly) but we consented ...pretty much.
If we can organise ourselves en masse like that I'm sure we can regain our freedoms once this is is dissipated.

vegvegveg · 30/03/2020 00:46

What Bouledeneige said 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

UYScuti · 30/03/2020 00:46

What's your plan for how to deal with this then OP?

Soph7777 · 30/03/2020 00:47

@UYScuti there's isn't one. I don't have one.
