So BoJo has COVID-19!

OP posts:

That's startling.
To think Jeremy Hunt knew all of that and still cut away.

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 08:49

Appaentlty this led to the Government preparing draft leglisation - just in case.

No wonder the leglisation was quick to come out.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 08:58

^^ anyone worried about ventilators should read the above. Please try not to worry, I know it’s a scarey time but measures are being taken. Flowers

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 09:02

That link did not reassure me - this Government is built on lies and weasly words

date, there are more than 8,000 ventilators available to NHS patients, with another 8,000 expected from existing international manufacturers in the coming weeks. We have also been clear that the UK must step up production of ventilators even further to support the UK’s response to the virus and save lives.

8000 in the coming weeks....that is a vague answer

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/03/2020 09:03

To think Jeremy Hunt knew all of that and still cut away.

No wonder Jeremy Hunt was shitting himself with the herd immunity plan.

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/03/2020 09:05

Cross post. Had the government acted, we would have those ventilators. I read on another thread a company (possibly the one delivering the 8k) contacted the government offering 10k for immediate delivery and 8k in the future and didn’t receive an answer.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 09:10

Well of course ... if you read it on another thread it must be true Confused

I think it’s really irresponsible to continue to create fear.

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 09:13

I think it’s really irresponsible to continue to create fear

Is false hope that much better?

The link you sent does not reassure me. 8000 in the coming weeks is meaningless.

It does say that UK manufacturers have been asked to make more - so that's good.

When were they asked to step up production?

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 09:15

mummy

There is NO WAY any company is holding 10000 ventilators in their stock when the total number in the Uk is 8000. It’s a ridiculous statement.

For scale - I’ll give you an example- one of the companies I know of who build ventilators in the UK build 30 per week normally.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 09:16

8000 in the coming weeks is meaningless

No it is not!!! It is double the current capacity and it will help over 20000 people per week!!!!

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 09:19

No it is not!!! It is double the current capacity and it will help over 20000 people per week

In the coming weeks - how long is the coming weeks - is that 2, 3, 4, 10 weeks....

Marieo · 29/03/2020 10:01

@Mummyoflittledragon no, they are a consultancy company who had 'secured' some out of spec ones from the UAE. When the government rightly said that they needed to do some due diligence on the company rather than use a middle man and just trust that they weren't being shafted, they got the hump and said they had sold them abroad. They never had them. I'm not saying that there is some stuff going on, but usually behind the headlines is the real story.

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/03/2020 10:27

Ok read the responses. Thanks for the feedback to my comment. Only went by what I was told. However what you both said makes a lot of sense.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 10:33

mummy

These are the best engineering companies in our country,

I understand why you’re worried, Flowers

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/03/2020 10:33

No wonder Jeremy Hunt was shitting himself with the herd immunity plan

He didn’t look happy....at all

middleager · 29/03/2020 10:34

A reminder of how the Govt handled this week by week, from encouraging handshaking to OKing mass events:

The resultant public enquiry will ask about Cheltenham, Crufts etc

I can see the essay questions in the future.

Name 3 errors in the handling of the Covid-19 crisis

LadyEloise · 29/03/2020 11:38

Anyone who went to Cheltenham and then returned to Ireland is a selfish ignorant prat in my eyes.
Putting so many others at risk. Sad

Mittens030869 · 29/03/2020 11:41

Voting figures mean nothing. At times of crisis, there is always a "Rally round the flag" effect which helps the government, but self-evidently it doesn't last.

I hope that's true of Trump, his popularity rating is 60% despite his stupid comments about America being able to open up for business on Easter Sunday. Despite what's happening in New York right now.

Pelleas · 29/03/2020 11:42

It amazed me that Crufts and Cheltenham went ahead. If they really didn't want to cancel them, they could at least have held them behind closed doors. And I say that as a regular racegoer in normal times.

middleager · 29/03/2020 12:22

Article on political 'allegiance' during times of crisis:

'Fearful people need the comfort of thinking they are in the hands of capable leaders. In benign times, there is not much psychological cost to ourselves to regard politicians as useless knaves. In an emergency, many of us need to believe that there are smart people at the top who know what to do.'

CendrillonSings · 29/03/2020 12:26

I am sure this will feature in the subsequent public enquiry that will no doubt report before the next election with a new Labour leader in a country devastated by the social and economic effects of this worldwide pandemic

Grim to see Labour supporters looking forward to such a prospect, but not surprising - it would be their only chance at winning an election in the next decade, after all.

I am not looking forward to this - but this is what is going to happen.
There will be an enquiry.
There are lots of questions to answer about our preparedness and our approach.

I am sure you agree with that.

Ask yourself if the Guardian would publish that article if we had a Labour Government and all the polls gave them excellent ratings for their handling of the crisis. Hmm

They’d never publish it in a million years!
