Let’s face it, if you think the Tory government is doing a great job it shows nothing more than your bar is impossibly low.

Wrong again. In the real world, most people don’t irrationally attribute the worst motives to the government but accept that they are doing all they can in an unprecedented crisis:

The public are fair, sensible people, not blinded by their hatred of Boris and the “evil Toriiieees”...

NEW: Our latest voting intention figures

Who seriously gives a shit about voting and poll figures at a time like this?

MarieQueenofScots · 28/03/2020 12:44

They’re not doing “all they can”.

But I appreciate its very hard to look past unwavering and unquestioning devotion.

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 12:45

An announcement will be made either today or tomorrow- it has not been overlooked

The Government has had several months to prepare - do you think that this announcement is long overdue?

How many and how long will they take to arrive?

Will there be enough for people who need a ventilator to get a ventilator?

MrsKypp · 28/03/2020 12:46

Very sorry to hear the news.

The only possible good thing is that he might take it more seriously now, although it would be typical if he only got it mildly while less wealthy people got it far worse and were left to die due to no ventilators (let alone no ECMO).

Boris will be receiving the best medical care. He won't be lying dying on a hospital corridor.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 28/03/2020 12:50

chom it has taken several months to organize - production has already began

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 28/03/2020 12:51

Government didnt want to announce until it was all finalised for obvious reasons

CendrillonSings · 28/03/2020 18:28

Who seriously gives a shit about voting and poll figures at a time like this?

I’m sure you’d care enormously if the figures didn’t directly contradict your endless carping Smile

Alsohuman · 28/03/2020 18:41

Precisely, we’re four years away from a general election. Party politics couldn’t be less relevant right now. Fwiw, it’s difficult to see how anyone could have done any better than Sunak, if he was Tory leader I might be persuaded to abandon the habits of a life time and vote for him.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 28/03/2020 18:43

Fwiw, it’s difficult to see how anyone could have done any better than Sunak

He does come over awfully well

chomalungma · 28/03/2020 18:49

My endless carping is about the preparedness of the country for this and the messages Johnson sent out about handshakes. There will be an enquiry after this and a lot of discussion.

Are there things now that we and the Government could be doing better and might regret not doing.

jasjas1973 · 28/03/2020 19:56

So, talks started to get more ventilators 2 yes 2 weeks ago...... its scandal it was only done then and not in early february.

The expectation is that component manufacturing and the assembly of the ventilators will begin next week at a host of sites across the UK, including a GKN facility on Isle of Wight, Siemens in Sudbury and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Broughton, North Wales, where Airbus is the main tenant.

Production will start slowly and then ramp up. The ambition is to produce at least 10,000 ventilators in the coming weeks. They will be sold to the NHS at cost, no company will profit.

This project was born on Friday 13 when the government reached out to industry for help.

Judging by the figures, not the Tories Grin

Fwiw, it’s difficult to see how anyone could have done any better than Sunak

I agree, obviously. Smile

And Crufts ... international global competition. Madness

JudyCoolibar · 28/03/2020 23:21

Voting figures mean nothing. At times of crisis, there is always a "Rally round the flag" effect which helps the government, but self-evidently it doesn't last.

Random18 · 28/03/2020 23:25

Judy that is so true ha ha..

I want the govt been right and i want the best outcome for every single Britain.

But once we are throughthis pandemic, questions need to be answered.

And I will still never vote Tory 😂

RishiSunakFanClub · 29/03/2020 00:06

You keep believing that Judy

Alsohuman · 29/03/2020 00:07

But it’s true.

Justaboy · 29/03/2020 00:17

I don't thibk that COVID-19 has any political leanings you know;!

CendrillonSings · 29/03/2020 02:24

But it’s true.

As true as when you said polling didn’t matter before the last election? Grin

DarnedSocks · 29/03/2020 02:35

Many people voted Conservative because the alternative was even worse. We had a pretty poor choice all round.

With Boris, I wonder if he's being treated with one of the drugs currently being trialled.
www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/10/hopes-rise-over-experimental-drugs-effectiveness-against-coronavirus
Demand might be an issue. Apparently Gilead Sciences are struggling with overwhelming demand for their drug. The article notes Doctors in the UK have been told there is a limited supply of remdesivir available on request.

chomalungma · 29/03/2020 08:34

Turns out there was a pamdemic exercise in 2016
The NHS was found to be lacking surge capacity

The Conservative Government didn't release the report because it would alarm the public.

Did they act on it?

Exercise Cygnus

Our preparations for pandemic influenza were exercised in October 2016 with NHS England participating in Exercise Cygnus. The exercise was set seven weeks into a severe pandemic outbreak and challenged the NHS to review its response to an overwhelmed service with reduced staff availability. Plans are currently being revised to incorporate the learning from this exercise and ensure our continued preparedness for future pandemic influenza outbreaks. We are also continuing the challenging work around the management of surge and escalation decision makingprocesses

The report is in the Telegraph

Ministers were told that hospitals would rapidly run out of intensive care beds, mortuaries would be overwhelmed and doctors would be forced to deny frail patients critical care.

A classified report on Cygnus’s findings - which has never been made public - highlighted problems delivering protective equipment such as masks and gowns to health workers, an issue which has been frequently raised by medics battling Covid-19.

It suggested that health bosses would have no choice but to “switch off” large parts of the NHS.

I am sure this will feature in the subsequent public enquiry that will no doubt report before the next election with a new Labour leader in a country devastated by the social and economic effects of this worldwide pandemic - which has exposed what truly matters in thiis country and the role of the State in supporting everyone in a time of need.
